Abstract

In the lens of technology used in classroom instruction, the 360-video virtual reality begins to use in the education field. This study aimed to identify the Indonesian language students in the higher education level perceptions of the use of SVVR (Spherical Virtual-based Video Reality) which was operated through the smartphone. The performance expectancy (PE) and effort expectancy (EE) in the UTAUT theory was employed to assess the data. There were 131 sophomores who learn the Indonesian language in the tourism department in the State Polytechnic of Bali involved to provide specific arguments through the questionnaire. The result of the study explained that learners in the Polytechnic education system were keen to engage SVVR (Spherical Virtual-Video Based Reality) during the teaching and learning process. Additionally, this learning medium elevated students’ urge significantly in learning the Indonesian language. Subsequently, the SVVR will be a promising tool employed by the lecturer who teaches the learners in the applied education system. These learning materials ought to be explored and developed more systematically by lecturers in underpinning students’ demand for knowledge and materials understanding in vocational education.

Abstract

This research aim is to analyze whether metacognitive strategy instruction CALLA affects students’ reading comprehension and reading awareness. This research used a quasi-experimental study in forms of pretest, treatment and post-test. Results showed that the group of experimental students had score significantly higher than the control group students on reading comprehension post-test and also showed significantly higher improvement in metacognitive reading strategy awareness and reading comprehension than control group students. The study recommends CALLA metacognitive strategy instruction to be an effective option for teaching reading comprehension skills at the senior high school level and in the contexts, which share similar characteristics.

Abstract

Specialized tax and accounting dictionaries are useful for vocational students as an independent learning medium, as they facilitate vocabulary mastery and eliminate the need for general dictionary lookups. The focus of this paper is the development of a dictionary of tax accounting terminology as an independent learning medium in the academic reading process and analysis of its implementation. This learning medium was developed using an adaptation of the ADDIE model which consists of five phases: needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This study elaborates on the student's perspective on the product produced in this study, namely a self-learning kit in the form of a tax accounting terms dictionary as well as student experiences in using dictionary applications to support their learning. The dictionary covers 731 data entries with the description of word translation, word class, definition, and sample sentences in English and Indonesian. In addition, users are also provided with 8 self-evaluation exercises in Quizizz which can be accessed via barcode scanning or link. Data analysis in the form of respondents’ responses in Google Form was described based on aspects of student feedback after using the dictionary. The descriptions of student perceptions are summarized into aspects of design, content, and usability. Students gave positive responses in those three aspects and highlighted that the dictionary assisted them in improving their vocabulary mastery, and reading comprehension as well as in reflecting on their learning progress through self-evaluation.

Abstract

As one of the general requirement subjects in universities in Indonesia, English is taught in all of the departments in the university. If the English class is not managed carefully, students may become unmotivated in taking the class since it may have little or no relation to the actual subject that they are taking at the university. Therefore, it is necessary to design an English course that can engage the student's interests and suit students’ needs. This research aimed to develop a course that is most suitable for the students in Creative Industry Department. In doing so, this research used a research and development procedure called the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model to develop the course and the materials. The process began with the needs analysis of the lecturers and the head of the Creative Industry Department, followed by the design of the course materials. Then, the course was implemented for the whole semester, and the cycle of the process ended with distributing questionnaires to the students who participated in the course. The result showed that the course could meet the target set by the head of the department, which was to increase students’ confidence in using English.

Abstract

This study aims to explore whether there is a significant improvement in preservice teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) after implementing hybrid presentation and teaching simulation as one of the tasks in the Teaching Methods and Conventional Media course. This study also reports students’ responses to the implementation of the hybrid presentation and teaching simulation. In this quantitative study, preservice teachers’ knowledge was measured using a TPACK scale prior to and subsequent to the hybrid class implementation period. Twenty-one students studying in the fourth semester of an English education department in a private university in Indonesia participated in this study. A paired-samples t-test result suggested a significant improvement in students’ scores from the pre- to the post- TPACK self-assessment (t = -8.210, p < .05). The findings of this study suggest that hybrid presentation can be an effective strategy to help foster preservice teachers’ TPACK skill while developing speaking and other skills.

Abstract

Most of the students in EFL classes have less exposure and chances to speak with friends and colleagues in English. In the present study, students were situated on video. The peer feedback-based application was employed for guiding students to provide comments on peers' speaking performance. In order to investigate peer feedback, an online observation was conducted in the English education study program, online class. The online questionnaire was also done to recognize the students’ perceptions of peer feedback. The study results reveal some steps done in doing the peer-feedback-based application in terms of the learners' speaking aspects including pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, and fluency. Moreover, it was found that the students can give feedback comprehensively to their peers. The perception of students toward peer feedback is positive and significantly helps students to improve their speaking ability. In conclusion, students have to think about their feedback before sending it to their peers. Future research should find the effectiveness of teacher feedback-based application and the correlation with the type of feedback.

Abstract

Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by involuntary repetitions or prolongations of words or syllables, or by involuntary interruptions in the flow of speech, known as blocks. Stuttering can happen due to genetics and environmental factors or psychogenic. This research aims to identify the types of stuttering that occur and to explain the factors that contribute to stuttering and the effect on the main character's speech fluency in the movie "The King's Speech." The data for this research comes from The King's Speech movie. The descriptive qualitative approach was used in this study in which the method and technique used in collecting the data were the observation method and the technique consists of observing, recording using Praat as a speech analyzer, and noting. The data were analyzed using the referential and distributional methods. Based on the result of the data analysis, the number of data for the type of stuttering is 286 data, each of them consisting of 158 data for repetition, 124 data for blocking, and 4 data for prolongation. In analyzing Bertie’s utterance, Bertie, as the main character, found a problem in producing consonants that cause stuttering, the consonants consist of /m/, /k/, /b/, /p/, /y/, /ch/, /th/, / c/, /g/, /w/ , /h/, /f/, /n/, /d/, and /s/ with repetition of sounds in words starting with phonemes /m/, /p/, /k/ and /b/ predominates when stuttering occurs. Meanwhile, the repetitions of vowel sounds that often occur are /a/, /i/, /o/, /e/ and the vowel sounds /a/ and /i/ dominate each repetition sound. Besides the problem in producing consonants and vowels in utterance, psychological factors are also the main factors in the occurrence of stuttering, such as feelings of depression, anger, and anxiety that trigger the main character to produce speech-blocking. Therefore, the type of stuttering experienced by the main character is psychogenic stuttering.
