Abstract

This study explores the implicit meanings contained in short WhatsApp responses such as “yes,” “okay,” and “later,” analyzed through a pragmatic perspective emphasizing speech acts and conversational implicature. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examines how contextual factors, relational dynamics, and digital cues like emojis or punctuation influence interpretation. The findings reveal that identical lexical expressions may convey varying illocutionary forces depending on tone, relationship closeness, and situational background. These differences often lead to misunderstandings or altered emotional perceptions in digital communication. The study highlights the importance of pragmatic awareness in online interaction to enhance clarity and maintain interpersonal harmony. It also contributes to the growing body of digital pragmatics research by demonstrating how brief text messages can carry complex social meanings that extend beyond their literal form

Abstract

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human life, as it is through this process that individuals can share information, build relationships, and understand the needs and meanings that arise in social interactions. Without communication, humans would struggle to collaborate, solve problems, and maintain the continuity of social life. Within the family environment, communication plays a significant role in children's growth and development. Through family interactions, children begin to understand the world around them, develop character, and develop self-confidence. This study focuses on how family communication patterns contribute to fostering children's motivation to learn in chess. The research approach used a qualitative method, with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews with three families with high-achieving chess children in Bogor Regency. The results indicate that democratic communication patterns are the most effective form of family communication in supporting children's emotional, social, and academic development. In the context of chess, parental support not only helps children improve technical skills but also fosters a positive, competitive mindset. The application of symbolic interaction theory also illustrates the relationship between the concepts of mind, self, and society, demonstrating how family communication patterns can strengthen children's motivation to learn and encourage the development of their potential in facing various challenges.

Abstract

This research analyzed Black Mirror season 7 series, episode 1 entitled Common People, using Vincent Mosco’s concept of commodification. A qualitative method is used in this research. There are 44 data found. The data were coded into three categories: audience commodification (21 data), content commodification (18 data), and labour commodification (5 data). The findings indicated that audience commodification was the most dominant form. The data showed that both the body and consciousness of the user are absorbed into commercial systems. The user’s body is turned into a source of energy and a channel for advertisement, while the user’s consciousness offered for advertising and something controlled through subscriptions. The company intended to turn the audience into a commodity. Therefore, Black Mirror season 7 series, episode 1 entitled Common People delivers a strong critique of the growing commercialization of human body and consciousness in the technological development.
