Abstract

Speaking is vital in English learning for expressing thoughts and communicating, but in elementary schools, especially public speaking, it is often overlooked and seen as too advanced. This research explores how the implementation of presentation tasks can help sixth-grade students’ public speaking skills at Al Azhar 53 Islamic Elementary School Brebes. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The participants included one English teacher and 17 sixth-grade students. The presentation task was integrated into English learning through structured introduction, preparation, practice, and performance supported by Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approaches. The findings showed that the use of presentation tasks helped students become more confident, organised, and expressive in presenting their ideas. The students enjoyed the process, especially when utilising visual media such as PowerPoint and posters. The teacher also noted improvements in the students’ ability to communicate and collaborate. In conclusion, presentation tasks can serve not only as a speaking activity but also as a meaningful learning experience that nurtures confidence and life skills from an early age.

Abstract

The global ecological crisis is often narrated through the rhetoric of disaster and fear for audiences. This often appears through various media consumed by the public. On the other hand, digital media offers an alternative space in the context of environmental communication based on aesthetics and lifestyle. This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of sustainability in the video series "Zero Waste Life" produced by NHK World-Japan. This study uses a qualitative approach. The analysis technique in this study uses Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics. The results of this study found that various visual and narrative signs operate in a triadic logic. These signs change the ontological status of "waste" to "aesthetic resources" that can be utilized to reduce plastic waste. In addition, NHK World-Japan also narrates efforts to reduce plastic waste at the family level. This environmental narrative about reducing plastic waste is demonstrated through Japanese cultural philosophies, such as Mottainai (regret for waste), Wabi-Sabi (appreciation of imperfection), and Satoyama (harmony of the landscape) as rhetorical arguments in visual form. The video “Zero Waste life” triggers the emergence of an ethic of care to encourage audience awareness towards sustainable behavioral practices.

Abstract

This study explores the social functioning of persons with disabilities who use modified three wheeled motorcycles as a means of mobility and daily activity support. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective, the research examines lived experiences related to independence, social participation, and role fulfillment within the community. Data were collected through in depth interviews and observations, then analyzed thematically to identify recurring meanings and patterns. The findings indicate that the use of three wheeled motorcycles contributes positively to mobility autonomy, access to social interaction, and the ability to perform economic and social roles. The vehicle functions not only as a transportation tool but also as a symbol of independence and self confidence. However, several challenges remain, including technical limitations, environmental barriers, maintenance issues, and social perceptions. Overall, the study highlights the importance of accessible transportation in strengthening social functioning and emphasizes the need for supportive policies, inclusive infrastructure, and community awareness to enhance the quality of life of persons with disabilities.

Abstract

Digital transformation and the growth of the gig economy have significantly reshaped professional work patterns, particularly for freelancers who engage with culturally diverse clients through digital platforms such as Fiverr. In this context, technical skills alone are insufficient; freelancers are also required to strategically manage communication and professional identity. This study aims to analyze intercultural communication dynamics and professional identity management strategies employed by freelancers at Lummyseen Agency in their interactions with clients on the Fiverr platform. This research adopts a qualitative approach using Edmund Husserl’s phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and literature review, with informants selected through purposive sampling from active freelancers at Lummyseen Agency. Data analysis focused on exploring freelancers’ subjective experiences in constructing, presenting, and negotiating their professional identities. The findings reveal that professional identity management is conducted consciously and strategically through the management of communication competence, self-identity, cultural identity, and facework practices in digital interactions. Freelancers adapt their communication styles, regulate emotions, and apply netiquette to address challenges related to language barriers, cultural differences, and stereotypes. This study concludes that professional identity management is a dynamic and ongoing process that plays a crucial role in building credibility, trust, and sustainable intercultural working relationships within the platform-based gig economy.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between Belle and the Beast in Beauty and the Beast (2017), often discussed in psychological literature in terms of Stockholm Syndrome. Utilizing John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory and Patrick Carnes' Trauma Bonding Theory, this research analyzes the emotional dynamics between Belle and the Beast to assess whether their bond reflects psychological trauma or genuine love. The analysis focuses on key scenes that depict emotional dependence, power imbalance, and fluctuating affection, revealing a complex relationship that blends elements of trauma bonding and healthy attachment. This paper suggests that while the relationship demonstrates characteristics of Stockholm Syndrome, it also reflects mutual emotional growth and trust, ultimately contributing to a broader understanding of psychological attachment in popular media. The study provides new insights into how these dynamics are represented in film, offering a nuanced view of relationships marked by power imbalance and emotional transformation.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the morphological processes found in the lyrics of Taylor Swift's album, The Life of a Showgirl, specifically focusing on the use of derivational and inflectional affixes. The study utilizes the morphological theory proposed by William O’Grady to identify and categorize the affixes present in the selected songs. The research method employed in this study is the descriptive qualitative method, which allows for a detailed examination of the linguistic features within their natural context. The data were collected by identifying words containing affixes, with a strict protocol that ensured no repetition; thus, each data point represents a unique instance of a specific affix type, regardless of how many times the word is repeated in the song. The results of the analysis reveal a total of 239 affixes found in the album. Specifically, the data consists of 131 derivational affixes and 108 inflectional affixes. The findings indicate that derivational affixes are the dominant category used by the songwriter. This prevalence suggests that in The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor Swift prioritizes the process of word formation to alter meanings and grammatical categories, thereby enhancing the descriptive depth and rhyme scheme of the lyrics, while inflectional affixes are utilized to maintain grammatical cohesion and tense consistency.

Abstract

Youth participation in social and community activities in urban areas tends to decline along with increasing individualism, personal busyness, and the dominance of digital activities among the younger generation. This condition presents a challenge for youth organizations such as Karang Taruna, which have a strategic role in fostering, empowering, and developing youth potential at the neighborhood level. Therefore, a public relations strategy is needed that can build effective, participatory communication, and is relevant to the character of today's youth. This study aims to determine and analyze the public relations strategy of Karang Taruna RW.5 Kota Bambu Utara in increasing youth participation in organizational and social community activities. This study uses a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach and descriptive methods. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews with Karang Taruna administrators and the youth involved, and supported by documentation of organizational activities. Data analysis was carried out using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results show that the public relations strategy of Karang Taruna RW.05 includes the utilization of interpersonal communication, the use of digital media such as WhatsApp and Instagram, as well as a persuasive and participatory approach in conveying messages to youth. This strategy is considered capable of building emotional closeness, increasing awareness, and encouraging youth involvement gradually. Although there are still obstacles such as differences in busyness and low response from some youth, an adaptive and dialogical public relations strategy has proven to play a significant role in increasing youth participation and strengthening the existence of Karang Taruna in the RW.05 environment of North Bambu City.

Abstract

Social science studies can contribute to environmental issues, including through literature, which serves not only as an aesthetic medium but also as a critical reflection to raise ecological awareness. This paper demonstrates that works of fiction can serve as an alternative medium for raising public awareness that environmental degradation is a reality with far-reaching consequences for the sustainability of life. One example is the film Into the Wild (2007), which depicts Christopher McCandless' journey away from the hustle and bustle of the city to ecological regions such as rural areas, mountains, rivers, and ultimately the wilds of Alaska. By employing the concepts of pastoralism and wilderness through an eco-Marxist approach, Christopher's journey can be understood as an ideological discourse that promotes pastoral values while criticizing overly exploitative characteristic of late capitalism towards nature. However, this criticism is ambivalent because the main character remains dependent on the material products of late capitalism to survive. Thus, Into the Wild can be read as both a representation and a problematic critique of late capitalism and the relationship between humans and the environment.
