Abstract

Sympathy for the struggle of indigenous peoples in the media is currently increasingly present with their sociological position as forest and climate guardians whose existence is increasingly fading along with the loss of their natural resources. This research identifies and analyzes editorial activities in reporting on indigenous people's struggles, referring to gatekeeping practices related to routine news production. This qualitative research uses case studies by analyzing relevant news texts created by editors from several global regional bureaus. Analysis using Network Gatekeeping Theory on the global environmental online media site Mongabay.com found that the editorial team plays a role in determining the direction of control over the information selected, added and presented regarding reporting on Indigenous 205 communities. The intrinsic narrative presented by this organization is based on knowledge at the individual level (founders, editors, journalists) about the topic, their belief in the values of diversity, relationships with Indigenous activists and human rights movement groups, and primary sources. information, and empirical experience of field coverage. This narrative is related to deepening the history of Indigenous peoples, the resources of how Indigenous peoples maintain their living spaces, areas with remaining forests that are rich in animal and plant diversity, mineral resources, coastal resources, and various potential environmental services. The emerging narrative of indigenous people's resistance to large capitalist groups is also a form of resistance to the capitalist-hegemonistic regime which is pro-market and pro-capital. Abstract

2023 may be remembered as the year that Artificial Intelligence (AI) hit the headlines for its potential to transform the economy, society, and humanity. With the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the wider public experienced first-hand what is it like to interact with an AI that shows remarkably human-like responses in one-to-one conversations. This is a technology with the potential for profound (both negative and positive) impacts on all aspects of human activity from business to politics, justice, education, arts, science, medicine, and virtually any other field of human endeavour. The challenges, as many academics, practitioners, observers, and some legislatures have realised, are in the capabilities of the underlying technology and in regulating AI and ensuring that its deployment and use are ethical, responsible, and trustworthy; that it is used for good rather than evil, to benefit humanity rather than destroy or damage it. However, given both the complexity of the technology itself and the competing vested interests of the many interested parties involved, this is a task which is much easier said than done. Indeed, some commentators have noted that the cursory nature with which ethics has been approached by some actors in the AI regulation debate has been nothing more than “ethics washing” (Metzinger, 2019a, 2019b; van Maanen, 2022) or even “ethics theatre” (Cath & Jansen, 2021). Simply articulating what is meant by “ethical AI” is a task freighted with intercultural challenges, as one may ask “whose ethics are we referring to?” Ethical systems vary through history and across cultures, making it difficult, if not impossible, to articulate a “universal” form of AI ethics. This paper examines the meta-ethical challenges of AI and its regulation and offers novel recommendations to improve discussions and outcomes around the ethics and regulation of contemporary AI. Abstract

Literature review plays a crucial role in social research by providing a comprehensive understanding of previous studies, identifying knowledge gaps, and guiding further research. This study aims to conduct a literature review within the field of social research. The research methodology includes determining the scope, identifying data sources from Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar (GS), data collection through reading and creating a comparison matrix, data analysis, interpretation, and synthesis. Determining the scope of the literature review involves defining the research boundaries and specifying key concepts, themes, and timeframes to be included. The identification of data sources from Scopus, WoS, and GS ensures comprehensive coverage by accessing scholarly articles, journals, conference papers, and other publications in the social sciences. The data collection process involves reading and analyzing selected articles, and extracting key information such as research objectives, methodologies, theoretical frameworks, findings, and knowledge gaps. Data analysis involves examining the information collected from the comparison matrix, identifying significant trends, and establishing connections between different sources. Through thematic analysis, the data is categorized into relevant themes. Data interpretation involves critically analyzing the findings and discussing their implications within the research context. Finally, the data is synthesized by integrating key findings and providing a comprehensive overview of the existing literature on the chosen topic. In conclusion, a literature review in social research provides an in-depth understanding of recent developments, identifies knowledge gaps, and provides a solid theoretical foundation for further research.
