Abstract

The excessive use of inorganic fertilizers in the cultivation of long beans (Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis) has a negative impact on the sustainability of soil ecosystems. This study aims to examine the efficiency of the use of NPK fertilizer combined with mycorrhizal and Rhizobium biological fertilizers in long bean plants. The experiments were arranged in a Randomized Group Design (RAK) with five treatments: control without fertilizer, single NPK (100% recommended dose), NPK+Mycorrhizae+Rhizobium (100% NPK), and single Rhizobium and single Mycorrhizae, each repeated four times. The parameters observed included vegetative growth, root system, nitrogen uptake, crop components, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). The results showed that single Rhizobium inoculation resulted in the highest pod weight (101.3 g/plant), the highest seed weight (70.9 g/plant), and the highest nitrogen uptake (2.05 g/plant), outperforming the full NPK treatment. The combination of NPK+Mycorrhizae+Rhizobium provides the highest NUE value and the best root system with a root length of 43.3 cm and a number of nodules of 52.2. Rhizobium inoculation has proven to have the potential to be an efficient and environmentally friendly substitution of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer in long bean cultivation.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of turmeric extract (Curcuma domestica) supplementation in drinking water on the production performance and egg quality of Isa Brown laying hens (Gallus gallus domesticus). A completely randomized design (CRD) was applied with 60 Isa Brown layer-phase hens, five treatments (P0: 0%, P1: 1%, P2: 2%, P3: 3%, P4: 4% turmeric extract), and four replicates. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that turmeric extract supplementation had a significant effect (P<0.05) on Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), water intake, and Hen Day Production (HDP). The lowest FCR was observed in P2 (2.35 ± 0.26), the highest HDP in P1 (69.75 ± 11.58%), and water intake decreased as turmeric extract concentration increased, with P0 showing the highest intake (7,132.50 ± 187.68 mL). Turmeric extract also significantly improved (p<0.05) egg weight, albumen thickness, and Haugh units. The highest egg weight was recorded in P4 (68.58 g), while the best albumen thickness (7.38 mm) and Haugh units (82.31) were found in P3. Feed intake, body weight gain, yolk percentage, albumen percentage, eggshell percentage, yolk thickness, eggshell thickness, and egg index were not significantly affected (p>0.05). It is concluded that turmeric extract supplementation at 3% in drinking water produces the best overall egg quality, while 4% yields the highest egg weight.

Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a high-value horticultural crop whose production quality is closely linked to cultivation method. The NFT A-Frame hydroponic system maximizes planting density in limited land; however, differences in gutter height create microclimatic stratification—particularly in light intensity—that may affect plant growth and yield. This study aimed to determine the effect of gutter height variation on the growth and yield of RZ Junction lettuce. The research was conducted at Kebun Sayur 24, Bojongsari Village, Kebumen Regency, from June to July 2025, using a Completely Randomized Design with three treatments: K1 (lower gutter), K2 (middle gutter), and K3 (upper gutter), each replicated three times. Variables observed included plant height, leaf number, root length, stem diameter, and fresh weight. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at 95% confidence level, followed by the Least Significant Difference test at 5% significance. Results showed that gutter height significantly affected most growth parameters. K3 consistently produced the best performance at harvest (6 WAP): plant height (28.15 cm), leaf number (18.25 leaves), stem diameter (3.33 cm), and fresh weight without roots (159.33 g), while K1 recorded the lowest values due to cumulative shading effects from upper layers. Root length was the only parameter showing no consistent significant difference among treatments, indicating relatively uniform nutrient solution distribution across gutter levels. The upper gutter position (K3) is recommended for RZ Junction lettuce cultivation in the NFT A-Frame system to achieve optimal growth and yield

Abstract

Ruminant livestock productivity is substantially influenced by the efficiency of rumen fermentation and post-ruminal nutrient metabolism. The increasing restriction on antibiotic use as growth promoters has driven intensive research into plant-derived bioactive compounds, commonly referred to as phytogenic feed additives (PFAs), as alternative modulators of digestive physiology. This review aims to critically examine the scientific evidence on the role of phytogenic active substances, particularly tannins, saponins, and essential oils, in modulating rumen fermentation processes and post-ruminal metabolic pathways in ruminants. A systematic literature search was conducted using Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, and Google Scholar, employing keywords such as "rumen metabolism," "post ruminal metabolism," "phytogenic feed additive," "tannin," "saponin," "essential oil," and "ruminant nutrition," with publications limited to 2020-2026. Evidence demonstrates that tannins, through protein precipitation mechanisms, significantly reduce ruminal nitrogen degradation and enhance the flow of rumen undegraded protein (RUP) to the small intestine, thereby improving amino acid absorption efficiency. Saponins selectively modulate rumen microbial populations, particularly suppressing methanogenic archaea and protozoa, resulting in reduced enteric methane emissions by 10-25% alongside improved volatile fatty acid (VFA) profiles. Essential oils composed of phenolic terpenoids disrupt microbial membrane integrity, shifting fermentation patterns toward increased propionate production, which carries direct implications for enhanced energetic efficiency. Collectively, the strategic incorporation of PFAs offers a multidimensional approach to simultaneously reduce environmental methane output, optimise feed energy utilization, and support productive performance in ruminant livestock systems.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of fermentation additives on the organoleptic quality and palatability of plastic bag-based silage for dairy cattle. Four treatments were applied: control silage, silage supplemented with molasses, silage supplemented with molasses and probiotics, and complete-feed silage supplemented with molasses, probiotics, and concentrate. The results showed that silage treated with molasses and probiotics exhibited the highest aroma score and tended to improve colour and texture, indicating a more favourable fermentation process and better preservation of silage quality. Odour scores were relatively similar among treatments, suggesting that all silages remained within an acceptable quality range. Feeding duration ranged from 246.17 to 301.33 s, while consumption percentage ranged from 56.67% to 62.83%. Although palatability parameters showed no marked differences among treatments, all silages were readily accepted by the animals. Overall, the combination of molasses and probiotics exhibited better sensory quality and favourable palatability, suggesting its potential as the most effective treatment for improving the quality of silage stored in plastic bags.

Abstract

Green mustard (Brassica juncea L.) is a horticultural commodity with high economic value and nutritional content, but its productivity is still constrained by low soil fertility and heavy reliance on inorganic fertilisers. The use of Liquid Organic Fertiliser (POC) from chicken waste using the brewing method combined with cow manure is expected to be an alternative in increasing plant growth and production sustainably. This study aims to determine and analyse the effect of providing POC from chicken waste using the brewing method and cow manure on the growth and production of green mustard. The study was an experimental method with a Randomised Block Design (RBD) consisting of 4 treatments and 6 replications. The treatments given included P0 (100% NPK), P1 (POC 250 ml/l + cow manure 10 tons/ha), P2 (POC 500 ml/l + cow manure 10 tons/ha), and P3 (POC 750 ml/l + cow manure 10 tons/ha). Data analysis used the ANOVA test at the probability error level = 0.05, and further testing using the 5% DMRT test. The results showed that the 100% NPK treatment produced the highest values for most growth and yield parameters. Among the organic fertiliser treatments, the application of 250 mL L⁻¹ chicken manure-based LOF produced by the brewing method combined with 10 t ha⁻¹ cow manure showed the most favourable growth and yield response. Therefore, this treatment is recommended as the best organic fertilization treatment tested in this study, although its performance remained lower than that of the 100% NPK treatment.

Abstract

Shallots are one of the strategic horticultural commodities in Indonesia with high economic value and significant influence on household consumption expenditure. Price fluctuations frequently occur due to changes in production, seasonal factors, market demand, and distribution systems. This study aims to analyze the effect of shallot price fluctuations on household consumption behavior in Cirebon City and to examine market integration between Cirebon City and Brebes Regency as the main production center. The study employed a survey method involving 34 household respondents selected through purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through questionnaires and interviews, while secondary data consisted of monthly shallot price data from January to December 2023. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, Pearson correlation, cointegration analysis, and Granger causality tests. The results showed that shallot prices fluctuated significantly during 2023, with the highest price recorded in April at IDR 28,350/kg and the lowest in September at IDR 14,350/kg. Regression analysis indicated that price fluctuations had a significant negative effect on household consumption behavior. Pearson correlation analysis produced a coefficient of -0.61, indicating a strong negative relationship between price and consumption. Furthermore, cointegration and Granger causality analyses revealed that shallot prices in Brebes significantly influenced prices in Cirebon, while the opposite relationship was not observed. These findings indicate that household consumption is responsive to price changes and that market integration exists, although market efficiency remains limited.

Abstract

Although feed is a major factor determining the productivity of ruminant livestock, feed, especially green feed, typically has a high fibre content that is difficult to digest effectively, leading to less efficient utilization of nutrients. As a result, efforts are needed to improve feed quality through microorganism-based fermentation, especially fermentative bacteria. The role of fermentative bacteria in improving the nutritional quality of ruminant feed is the subject of this study. The method used is to conduct literature research on relevant national and international journals. The results of the study showed that fermentative bacteria improve feed digestibility, convert lignocellulose into a simpler material, and produce volatile fatty acids (VFA), which are the main source of energy for livestock. Bacterial activity also helps in microbial protein synthesis and nutrient utilization. The type of bacteria, substrate composition, pH, and environmental conditions are some of the factors that affect the fermentation results. As a result, a good idea is to maximize the use of fermentative bacteria to improve the quality and productivity of ruminant animal feed.
