Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of variations in fermentation time on the chemical properties of bokashi and to compare whether the resulting bokashi meets the quality standards of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for Solid Organic Fertiliser. This study was conducted at the Kupang Animal Husbandry Training Centre and analysed in the Soil Chemistry Laboratory of Nusa Cendana University. The materials used in this study consisted of livestock waste and agricultural waste fermented using EM4 and molasses. The study used a completely randomised design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 5 replications, where each replication consisted of 15 kg of solid material with the same material composition. The treatments tested were fermentation time consisting of P1 (7 days), P2 (14 days) and P3 (21 days). The research data were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test and the Games-Howell test. The results showed that different variations in fermentation time had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the chemical quality of bokashi. Treatment P3 (21 days of fermentation) gave the most balanced chemical quality, resulting in the optimal organic carbon content at 25.65%, the highest nitrogen increase with N 2.39%, and a significantly decreased C/N ratio to the lowest level of 10.74. Furthermore, it also increased P to 0.67%, K to 0.86%, and maintained a neutral pH of 7.78. The chemical quality of bokashi produced from all treatments has met the quality standards of SNI 7763:2024 Solid Organic Fertilizer. It can be concluded that variations in fermentation time affect the chemical content of bokashi based on livestock and agricultural waste and can be used to obtain better bokashi quality.

Abstract

Bovine tropical theileriosis, caused by Theileria annulata, is an important tick-borne disease in cattle that is frequently associated with clinically relevant hematological disturbances. This systematic literature review aimed to synthesize published evidence on hematologic alterations reported in cattle affected by bovine tropical theileriosis, with an emphasis on erythrogram, leukogram, and platelet-related changes. The review question was structured using the PEO format: cattle infected with T. annulata as the population, bovine tropical theileriosis as the exposure, and hematologic alterations as the outcome. Literature screening was conducted using a Scopus-led search and complementary source verification with predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Original research articles involving cattle with confirmed T. annulata infection and reporting at least one hematological parameter were included in this review. Review articles, buffalo-only studies, mixed-species reports without separable cattle data, and papers lacking extractable hematologic outcomes were excluded from the study. The current synthesis showed that the most consistent alterations were decreases in red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, and packed cell volume/hematocrit, indicating that anemia is the dominant hematologic feature of bovine tropical theileriosis. In contrast, leukogram findings were more heterogeneous, with studies reporting leukopenia, leukocytosis, lymphocytopenia, lymphocytosis, neutropenia, or mixed patterns, depending on the disease severity and study context. Platelet-related abnormalities were less frequently reported but generally suggested thrombocytopenia in severe clinical cases. Overall, erythrogram alterations were the most consistent hematologic indicators of cattle infected with T. annulata.

Abstract

Beta-carotene is the primary provitamin A carotenoid and natural antioxidant in forage plants, yet its biosynthesis and accumulation in tropical forages remain insufficiently characterised. This review systematically examined the biosynthetic pathways, regulatory factors, and nutritional implications of beta-carotene in forage plants using 45 peer-reviewed articles selected through a PRISMA-adapted protocol. Beta-carotene biosynthesis proceeds via the plastidial MEP pathway, with phytoene synthase (PSY) and lycopene beta-cyclase (LCYB) as principal regulatory enzymes. Accumulation varies substantially across forage species and is governed by harvest age, light intensity, temperature, and post-harvest management, with silage conserving up to 75–85% of initial beta-carotene content compared with losses of 70–90% during hay-making. In ruminants, an estimated 20–70% of ingested beta-carotene survives ruminal degradation (Wyss, 2020; Nozière et al., 2021; Calderón et al., 2020) and is subsequently absorbed and converted to vitamin A, supporting reproductive performance, immune function, and milk quality. Tropical legumes such as Leucaena leucocephala and Stylosanthes guianensis are rich beta-carotene sources, whereas data for Indonesian-specific cultivars of Napier grass, gamal (Gliricidia sepium), and indigofera (Indigofera zollingeriana) remain scarce. Strategic forage selection, optimised harvest intervals, and targeted supplementation are recommended to maximise beta-carotene delivery to ruminants under tropical conditions.

Abstract

The search for natural feed additives that can enhance ruminal fermentation efficiency has gained growing attention in sustainable ruminant production research. Rabbit cecotropes contain microbial metabolites, fermentation by-products, enzymes, and microbial biomass that may support their use as a postbiotic-rich feed ingredient. This study evaluated the effects of rabbit cecotrope supplementation on the kinetics of in vitro ruminal gas production. Four dietary treatments, namely 0% (P0 as control), 5% (P1), 10% (P2), and 15% (P3) rabbit cecotropes, were incubated using the in vitro gas production technique. Cumulative gas volume was recorded every two hours over a 24-hour incubation period and fitted to the model Y = a + b(1−e⁻ᶜᵗ), where (a) denotes gas production from the rapidly soluble fraction, (b) denotes gas production from the insoluble but fermentable fraction, and (c) denotes the fractional rate of gas production. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS together with orthogonal polynomial contrasts. Rabbit cecotrope supplementation significantly affected all kinetic parameters (p≤0.001). Parameter (a) increased linearly from −2.53 ml in P0 to 0.52 ml in P3, while parameter (b) declined from 195.0 ml to 109.3 ml. Parameter (c) increased from 0.034 h⁻¹ in the control to 0.051 h⁻¹ in both P2 and P3. The simultaneous increase in a and c alongside the decline in b indicates a shift toward faster fermentation dynamics. These findings suggest that rabbit cecotropes have potential as a postbiotic-rich feed ingredient that can modulate ruminal fermentation kinetics.

Abstract

Curry leaf plant (Murraya koenigii) is an aromatic plant from the Rutaceae family found widely in South and Southeast Asia. Used as a culinary spice, curry leaves have great potential as phytogenics (bioactive compounds), natural plant-based used in animal feed to improve health and productivity. The use of phytogenics is a safer alternative to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) because it can reduce the risk of microbial resistance and drug residues in livestock products. Bioactive compounds in curry leaves include carbazole alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenolics, terpenoids, and essential oils, which act as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories, immunomodulators, and metabolic promoters. Phytochemical analysis shows that alkaloids are dominant, accompanied by flavonoids, saponins, phenolics, and tannins, which contribute to their biological activity. Curry leaf extracts and powder help control pathogenic microflora in livestock digestive tract and reduce the risk of infection. Curry leaves can also suppress inflammation and boost the immune system by increasing antioxidant capacity and reducing oxidative stress. From a sustainability perspective, curry plants are easy to cultivate in tropical regions, can be harvested repeatedly, and have a relatively low environmental impact. However, further research is needed on optimal dosage, long-term safety, molecular mechanisms of action, and the standardization of ingredient quality and regulatory standards for their use as feed additives. In general, the curry leaves are a local phytogenic resource with multifunctional activities, potentially improving livestock health and productivity, and supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly livestock systems.

Abstract

Agricultural extension at Balai Penyuluhan Pertanian (BPP) Junrejo still faces limitations in time, human resources, field coverage, and the use of smartphones as learning media. This study aimed to develop and evaluate Agro Tani, a smartphone-based agricultural extension medium created with the Glide App. The study used Research, Development, and Diffusion (RD&D) with the 4D development model: define, design, develop, and disseminate. The research was conducted at BPP Junrejo, Batu City, from January to February 2026, involving 20 respondents, comprising 11 extension workers and 9 farmers, selected through saturated sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, pre-test and post-test instruments, skill assessment, and user satisfaction evaluation. Data were analysed descriptively, using N-Gain and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The developed application provided several functions, including extension materials, images and videos, review and rating, BPP Junrejo information, BPP Centre, location access, and external information links. Evaluation showed a high knowledge improvement (N-Gain = 0.84), moderate skill improvement (N-Gain = 0.32), very high user satisfaction (score = 853), and very effective training implementation (N-Gain = 0.81). Wilcoxon analysis showed significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores for knowledge, satisfaction, and skills (p < 0.05). Agro Tani is feasible as a digital extension medium to support more accessible, flexible, and efficient agricultural information services at BPP Junrejo.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the potential of forage production and analyze its carrying capacity for the development of sheep farming in Majalengka Regency. The study was conducted through the identification of dominant types of forage fodder, as well as measurement of forage biomass production per hectare of data obtained from secondary data available from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Majalengka Regency. The method used is quantitative descriptive method and then the data obtained is analyzed to calculate the carrying capacity of the land based on the need for dry matter (BK) per sheep per year. The results showed that the Majalengka Regency area has a fairly high diversity of forage species, with the potential for forage biomass production reaching an average of 20-25 tons of fresh material/ha/year or equivalent to 4-5 tons of BK/ha/year. Assuming the consumption needs of sheep are around 1.5 kg BK/day, then each hectare of land can support around 7-9 sheep per year. This finding shows that Majalengka has the potential carrying capacity of natural forage and agricultural waste of rice and corn straw to support the sustainable development of sheep farming. Some sub-districts that fall into this category include Maja (3.35), Bantarujeg (3.13), Kertajati (2.43) and Majalengka (2.09). This high index value indicates that the region has great potential to become a center for sheep farming development, because feed is available in sufficient or even excess quantities. Sheep farming centers in 2024 still focus on areas including Sindang (2.44), Banjaran (2.20), Panyingkiran (1.88), Argapura (1.56), and Cigasong (1.36). The high LQ reflects that the livestock sector is one of the main focuses of the economy in the region despite the low feed carrying capacity. Optimizing forage utilization requires sustainable feed management such as the creation of a central feed warehouse located in two different places, namely in kertajati, Bantarujeg and maja for feed buffering in the central sheep cattle area so that it can be integrated with the smallholder farming system

Abstract

Rice straw and cassava waste are abundant agricultural byproducts, but they have limitations in nutritional value, particularly low protein content. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a combination of straw and cassava substrates, as well as the addition of Saccharomyces cerevisiae mold, on increasing the content of single cell protein (SCP), crude protein, pure protein, microbial biomass, and pH stability during fermentation. The study was conducted experimentally with a 2×2 factorial completely randomized design (CRD) using four treatments: JKN (straw + cassava peel without yeast), JKR (straw + cassava peel + yeast), JSN (straw + cassava without yeast), and JSR (straw + cassava + yeast). Fermentation was carried out for 7 days under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that the JSR treatment produced the highest SCP (47.59 mg/mL) and the largest microbial biomass (4.37 mg/mL), while JSN produced the highest crude protein (13,40%) and pure protein (9,61%). The addition of yeast significantly increased PST and biomass, but in some treatments, it decreased the pure protein content. The combination of straw and cassava has been shown to increase the nutritional value of feed ingredients through the fermentation process, with effectiveness depending on the type of substrate and the presence of microbial inoculum.

Abstract

Maize production in tropical regions is frequently threatened by insect pests, leading to significant yield losses. Environmentally friendly strategies such as intercropping offer potential solutions for pest suppression while enhancing crop productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different intercropping combinations in improving maize production by reducing pest pressure. The research was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with five treatments: monoculture maize, and maize intercropped with groundnut, citronella, Zinnia refugia, and chili, each replicated three times. Observed variables included yield components such as the number of kernel rows per cob, kernels per row, weight of 100 kernels, and yield per unit area. Results showed that maize intercropped with Zinnia refugia produced the highest performance in most yield components, significantly increasing row number per cob, kernels per row, and total yield compared to monoculture. Meanwhile, citronella intercropping resulted in the highest 100-kernel weight. In contrast, intercropping with chili resulted in the lowest yield, possibly due to resource competition or allelopathic effects. The findings suggest that specific intercropping patterns, particularly those involving refugia or repellent plants, can enhance maize productivity and serve as effective pest management strategies. Further research is recommended to validate these findings under diverse agroecological conditions.

Abstract

Industrial wastewater sludge is rich in organic matter and nutrients and has the potential to be used as a amendments despite its high moisture content (91,87%). Rice husk charcoal can address moisture and heavy metal content to achieve quality standards. This study aims to determine the optimal combination of each material and to investigate the correlation between chemical and biological properties. Incubation of the growing medium (sludge, rice husk charcoal, compost) was conducted using seven different material combinations with a completely randomized design. Soil chemical analysis (pH, organic carbon, N, P, K, KTK) and soil biological analysis (total microbes and fungi) were conducted after one month of incubation. The results showed that MSG sludge is nutrient-rich (organic carbon 46.63%, N 7.30%) but Fe (27,836 ppm) and Pb (54 ppm) exceed the limits. Treatment P1 (100% sludge, 75% rice husk charcoal, and 50% compost) had the highest total microorganisms and fungi (0.75 × 10⁵ CFU/g and 0.88 × 10⁵ CFU/g), as well as the highest pH, organic carbon, N, P, K, and KTK. Fe increased while Pb decreased. Treatment P1 was the best combination and met the quality standards for soil conditioners. Microbes and fungi were positively correlated with pH. KTK was positively correlated with pH and organic carbon. An increase in pH had the highest positive correlation with the growth of microbes and fungi.
