Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of giving a different dose of NPK fertilizer with mycorrhizal inoculation on the growth and yield of pakcoy (Brassica rapa) plants. The research was carried out on a trial site of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Majalengka using a non-factorial Group Random Design (RAK) with six NPK dose treatments and four replicas. The treatment consisted of A (0 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza), B (0.3 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza), C (0.6 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza), D (0.9 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza), E (1.25 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza), and F (1.50 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza) which were repeated four times. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, root length, root volume, wet weight, and dry weight of the plant. The data from the study were analyzed using non-factorial RAK, if there was an influence on the treatment, followed by Duncan's follow-up analysis. The results showed that the combination of NPK and mycorrhizal fertilizers in general had a positive effect on vegetative growth and pakcoy plant yields. Treatment E (1.25 g NPK + 8 g mycorrhiza) gave the best results on most parameters, with higher increases in plant height, leaf count, and dry weight compared to other treatments. Thus, a dose of 1.25 g of NPK combined with 8 g of mycorrhizae is the optimal combination to support the sustainable growth and productivity of pakcoy.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the body weight of Bali cattle weighed as qurban animals during Eid al-Adha 1445 H (2024 AD) and 1446 H (2025 AD) in Karangasem Regency, Bali Province. Body weight data were obtained from the weighing of 202 head of cattle in 1445 H and 223 head of cattle in 1446 H. Descriptive analysis was performed to determine the mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation (CV), while the comparison between years was conducted using the Mann–Whitney U test, since the data were not normally distributed based on the Shapiro–Wilk and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests (p < 0.05). The results showed that the average body weight of Bali cattle in 1445 H was 337.74 ± 55.13 kg with a CV of 16.32%, while in 1446 H the average body weight was 331.79 ± 47.96 kg with a CV of 14.46%. CV values below 20% indicated that cattle body weights were relatively homogeneous, with higher uniformity observed in 1446 H. The Mann–Whitney U test yielded a significance value of p = 0.362 (p > 0.05), indicating that there was no significant difference in Bali cattle body weight between the two years. It can be concluded that the body weight of Bali cattle slaughtered for Eid al-Adha in Bali was relatively stable across years, reflecting consistent management practices and the genetic contribution of Bali cattle in maintaining stable body weight performance.

Abstract

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) seeds have potential as an alternative plant-based protein source for ruminant feed due to their high nutritional value. However, their utilization remains limited due to the presence of antinutritional compounds, such as tannins, phytic acid, saponins, and trypsin inhibitors, which reduce digestibility and nutrient availability. This literature review aims to analyze the effects of various processing methods on reducing antinutritional compounds in tamarind seeds and their implications for improving feed quality. The review encompasses five national and international studies that address biological (fermentation and germination) and physical–thermal (soaking, roasting, and steaming) treatments. Results indicate that fermentation is the most effective method for reducing phytic acid and trypsin inhibitors through microbial enzymatic activity, whereas soaking and roasting decrease tannin and saponin contents by more than 70%. Steaming and dry heating produce moderate reductions without compromising protein content. Combining biological and physical–thermal treatments yields the best results in lowering antinutritional compounds while enhancing digestibility and nutritional value. Therefore, tamarind seeds can serve as an economical and sustainable local protein source for ruminant feed formulation.

Abstract

Forage is the primary feed source for ruminant livestock, especially dairy cattle, as it provides essential nutrients for productivity. However, limited forage availability due to land conversion and seasonal changes has encouraged farmers to utilize field grasses, including roadside vegetation, as an alternative feed source. This study aimed to determine the botanical composition and carrying capacity of forage along the roadsides in the highlands of Bandung Regency. The sampling method used was purposive sampling, which involved deliberately selecting research locations through direct field surveys for data and sample collection. Sampling was conducted in five districts in the highlands of Bandung Regency—Ciwidey, Rancabali, Pangalengan, Cimaung, and Arjasari—with ten sampling plots in each district, resulting in a total of 50 plots. Sampling used a quadrat measuring 1 m × 1 m, which was placed randomly. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that there were 72 botanical species, with Galinsoga parviflora being the most dominant species based on frequency of occurrence. At the same time, Pennisetum clandestinum was the most dominant species based on forage production. Based on biomass proportion, grasses dominated at 77.32%, legumes at 1.02%, and weeds at 21.66%. The carrying capacity of the roadsides in the highlands of Bandung Regency was 0.92 LU/ha/year, with forage production of 4.93 tons DM/ha/year, indicating that the roadside areas can support approximately one mature dairy cow, or two heifers, or four calves. The roadside in Rancabali District had the highest forage production, reaching 7.70 tons DM/ha/year with a carrying capacity of 1.40 LU/ha/year.

Abstract

Hydroponic corn fodder is a forage crop derived from corn, cultivated in a water medium and mixed with nutrients to meet the plant's nutritional needs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer levels on the growth profile of hydroponic corn fodder (Zea mays). This research was conducted in the Field Laboratory of the Animal Science Study Program, Nusantara PGRI University Kediri, with observations on the growth profile of hydroponic corn fodder. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with an experimental method consisting of 4 treatments and 5 replications. The data obtained were analyzed using Analysis of Variance, and if the test results showed differences, further testing was conducted using the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The main treatments were different levels of nitrogen fertilizer application, namely concentrations P0 (0 ml/l), P1 (0.8 ml/l), P2 (1.6 ml/l), P3 (2.4 ml/l). The results showed that different levels of nitrogen fertilizer application did not have a significant effect (P>0.05) on plant height, had a significant effect (P<0.05) on leaf width, leaf length, and stem length, and had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on stem diameter and number of leaves in hydroponic corn fodder. The research results showed that the growth profile, viewed from the morphology of the stem and leaves in hydroponic corn fodder, showed the best values with increasing N doses, with the best research results shown at the use of N fertilizer dose of 1.6 ml/l (P2). Abstract

Soils from post-tin mining soil typically exhibit suboptimal conditions for plant growth due to low organic matter content, sandy texture, and the presence of heavy metal wastes. Groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) are a highly nutritious food crop of significant economic importance, rich in protein and fat. Enhancing the quality and fertility of old tin mine soils can be accomplished by adding organic growing media to facilitate optimal groundnut cultivation. This study aims to enhance groundnut growth by the addition of organic planting media and determining of the optimal dosage. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) using organic planting media with four treatment levels: P0 = control (no organic planting media), P1 = 85% post-tin mining soil + 15% organic growing media, P2 = 75% post-tin mining soil + 25% organic growing media, P3 = 60% post-tin mining soil + 40% organic growing media. Each treatment was replicated five times, giving a total of 20 experimental units. Data were evaluated utilizing Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) succeeded by Duncan's Test at the 5% significance level. The addition of organic growing media into post-tin mining soil influenced root biomass in groundnut plants, showing a tendency to enhance leaf count and canopy biomass, however this effect was not statistically significant. This study found no significant effect on plant height.

Abstract

Beef availability is a key component of national food security, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is one of Indonesia’s main cattle-producing regions with a challenging dryland ecosystem. However, prolonged drought, heat stress, and limited feed supply reduce reproductive efficiency, as reflected in high service per conception (S/C), long calving intervals (CI), variable conception rates (CR), and extended days open (DO). This review aims to analyze the reproductive constraints of cattle in NTT and identify adaptive management strategies to improve reproductive performance. A systematic literature review was conducted using full-text national scientific publications published within the last ten years that discuss reproductive indicators in NTT’s dryland systems. The findings show wide variation in reproductive performance across districts, with S/C ranging from 1.16–3.9, CR from 43.55–87.85%, and CI from 380–1003 days, influenced by nutritional deficits, heat stress, and traditional management practices. The adoption of reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination, estrus synchronization, sexed semen, and embryo transfer has been shown to increase conception rates up to 70% and shorten CI to 12–15 months. In conclusion, improving reproductive efficiency in NTT requires integrated reproductive biotechnology, strengthened estrus detection, improved nutritional management, and collaborative support from farmers, inseminators, extension agents, and local government to enhance productivity in dryland cattle systems.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze consumer preferences for free-range and broiler chicken in traditional markets in Kupang City. Data were collected from 50 respondents selected through accidental sampling at three purposively chosen traditional markets—Oebobo, Oeba, and Inpres Naikoten—between 5 and 25 October 2025. Primary data were obtained through interviews and questionnaires, while secondary data were sourced from institutional reports and relevant literature. Descriptive statistics were used to identify consumer characteristics and attribute evaluations, followed by an independent samples t-test or Mann–Whitney U test to assess differences in preferences between the two types of chicken. The results show that consumers exhibit a stronger preference for free-range chicken due to its richer flavor profile, firmer texture, and greater perceived health value, positioning it as a premium-quality product. In contrast, broiler chicken is primarily chosen for its affordability, high market availability, and practicality in food preparation, making it the most feasible option for daily household consumption. The Mann–Whitney U test returned a significance value of < 0.05 for all assessed attributes, confirming statistically significant differences in consumer preferences between the two chicken types. Overall, these findings indicate distinct market segmentation, where free-range chicken appeals to consumers who prioritize sensory quality and health attributes, while broiler chicken dominates routine demand driven by economic and efficiency considerations. The results are expected to serve as a strategic reference for market actors and policymakers in developing poultry marketing strategies and food policy interventions

Abstract

Putak (Corypha utan Lamk) is a locally abundant starch source in Eastern Indonesia with emerging potential as a functional binder for feed wafer production. This study aims to analyze the chemical properties of putak starch and its role as a binder in feed wafer production, and to compare it with other commonly used binding materials. The study was conducted using a descriptive approach based on various scientific publications obtained from the Scopus and Google Scholar databases using the keywords: “adhesive, Corypha utan, feed wafer, gelatinization, physical quality, putak, and binder”. This review summarizes current evidence on the chemical composition and techno-functional properties of putak starch in relation to binder performance requirements. Putak contains high carbohydrate levels (85–87%) and substantial starch content (64–67%), with an amylose–amylopectin ratio comparable to tapioca and sago. These characteristics support desirable functional behaviours, including gelatinisation ability. Comparative literature shows that starch-based binders consistently improve physical qualities, including wafer durability index (WDI), density, impact resistance, total solubility, and water absorption. Given its beneficial properties and local availability, putak represents a promising sustainable alternative to commercial starch binders. Further focused studies are needed to determine binding efficiency and storage stability.

Abstract

Pajajaran ducks are among the leading local duck breeds with development potential, but comprehensive data on the quality of their eggs remains limited. This study aims to examine the characteristics of the interior and exterior quality of Pajajaran duck hatching eggs. A total of 60 eggs were analyzed using a descriptive method. The results showed that the eggs have a uniform shape (Shape Index 79.08%; Coefficient of variation 3.38%), are predominantly blue-shelled (58.3%), and have a 96.7% fine-shell surface.  Average egg weight was 75.75 g, with a proportion of yolk of 28.7 g and albumen of 34.9 g, and . The interior quality is characterized by a Haugh Unit value of 84.61 (AA/excellent category), yolk color 11.26 (deep orange category), yolk index 0.36, and albumen index 0.09. The study concluded that Pajajaran duck eggs have excellent exterior and interior quality and uniformity, making them a potential, superior hatching egg material to support sustainable breeding programs.
