Abstract

This research delves into the Masonic secrets embedded within Dan Brown's novel "The Lost Symbol," particularly as they relate to Washington D.C.'s enigmatic history. The study centers on Freemasonry symbols depicted in the novel and seeks to uncover their deeper meanings by analyzing real-life counterparts. The primary aim is to disclose the second-order meanings of these symbols, thereby unraveling the myths associated with Freemasonry, especially the so-called "lost symbol." Employing Roland Barthes' semiology perspective, this research reveals how Masonic symbols, as described by Brown, are interwoven with Washington's iconic monuments. The analysis focuses on symbols such as the House of the Temple, the Apotheosis of Washington, the Pyramid, the Circumpunct, and various Masonic working tools. By interpreting these symbols through both their first-order (denotative) and second-order (connotative) meanings, the study aims to reveal the myth behind the lost symbol. The findings indicate that the Masonic secrets are indeed hidden within the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building, specifically in the House of the Temple, where Masonic rituals are conducted, and the Capitol Rotunda, which is rich with concealed Masonic lore. The ultimate Masonic secret, as portrayed in the novel, is the "Lost Word," symbolized by the phrase "Laus Deo" (Praise God), inscribed atop the Capitol. According to Masonic beliefs, this symbol holds the power to unlock profound secrets, guiding them towards their ultimate objective: the establishment of a New World Order. Through the lens of second-order meaning, the myth of the lost word is interpreted as a celestial symbol, representing the promise of new beginnings and the transition from night to morning, as envisioned by the Masonic forefathers who designed the U.S. Capitol.

Abstract

The Helong people in Kupang Regency, NTT Province, have experienced being exposed to cough and tuberculosis (TB). Therefore, it is believed that this community has also long since developed their local knowledge and traditional ways to prevent and treat the disease. In general, this study aims to analyze and find the concept of the Helong Tribe community and ethnomedical practices for the prevention and treatment of cough and tuberculosis (TB). This research is a medical anthropology research using a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach, which is supported by laboratory research and literature studies. Field research was carried out on Semau Island, NTT Province, involving traditional medicine. The results of the research conducted in the form of interviews with traditional medicine practitioners in the Helong tribe obtained as many as 31 plants used in treatment, and there were 3 plants used to treat cough, including hemorrhagic cough/tuberculosis, namely plants: white banyan (Ficus benjamina L), mesocarp palm fruit (Borassus flabellifer L.) and white flower (Clerodendrum costatum R.Br). The three plants that are suspected to have the ability to treat cough and cough up blood carried out preliminary tests of antibacterial activity against bacteria that generally cause stones, namely Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results obtained for ethanol extract of white banyan leaves (Ficus benjamina L) with a concentration of 25% b/v with a diameter of 16.53 mm, 50% b/v with a diameter of 16.33 mm, and 75% b/v with a diameter of 16.56 mm. Mesocarp ethanol extract of palm fruit (Borassus flabellifer L.) At a concentration of 25% b/v with an inhibitory zone diameter of 11.60 mm, a concentration of 50% b/v with an inhibitory zone diameter of 12.30 mm, a concentration of 75% b/v with an inhibitory zone diameter of 13.40 mm, for white flowers (Clerodendrum costatum R.Br) at a concentration of 25%b/v with an inhibitory zone diameter of 9.41 mm, a concentration of 50% b/v of 10.36 mm and a concentration of 75% b/v of 11.24 mm. This means that the three plants have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Furthermore, for the antibacterial activity test against Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria for white banyan plants (Ficus benjamina L.), mesocarp of palm fruit (Borassus flabellifer L.), and white flowers (Clerodendrum costatum R.Br) by the MODS (Microscopically Observed Drug Susceptibility) method, it was obtained that the three plants at concentrations of 250 ppm, 500 ppm, and 1000 ppm were only seen to have the growth of Micobacterium tuberculosis bacteria in the second week. Passive control with INH observation until week IV did not see any bacterial growth, while for negative control in the first week, the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria was seen. It can be concluded that a concentration greater than 1000 ppm is needed for the three plants to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria.

Abstract

Pork has an important role in the lives of the people of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), both as a source of animal protein and in cultural and social contexts. Traditional processed products such as Sui Wu'u from Bajawa are examples of pork preservation that has been passed down from generation to generation through the practice of local wisdom. The preservation process using natural ingredients such as cornstarch and salt not only extends the shelf life, but also improves the sensory quality as well as maintains the microbiological and physicochemical qualities of the meat. The addition of cornmeal which is rich in antioxidants and fiber and salt as natural preservatives, helps inhibit the growth of pathogenic microbes and maintains the taste of the product. Nonetheless, the curing process needs to pay attention to various factors such as raw materials, curing methods, and storage temperatures to ensure the quality and safety of the final product. The purpose of this study was to determine the organoleptic quality, fat oxidation and total bacteria in sui wu'u. The design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 3 treatments 4 replicates of the addition of corn flour consisting of P1 = 500 g, P2 = 1000 g, P3 = 1,500 g. The parameter measured were: organoleptic quality (color, aroma, taste, and tenderness), fat oxidation and total bacteria. The data of organoleptics were analysed witk Kuakall-Wallis test whereas fat oxidation and total bacteria were analyzed with ANOVA. The results showed that organoleptic quality (color, aroma, taste, and tenderness) and total bacteri were same  (P>0.05) whereas fat oxidation decreased as the level of corn starch increased.  It can be concluded that given corn starch coulg retard the fat oxidation.

Abstract

Pig farming has great potential to be developed because it is efficient in converting feed into meat. Feed is the largest cost component in production, which is about 60-80% of the total cost. Landrace pigs are the main choice of breeders because of their fast growth and docile temperament. However, the high price of factory-made feed encourages farmers to look for alternative feed ingredients, including agricultural waste such as sweet potato leaves (Ipomea batatas L), which are rich in nutrients and relatively cheap (Sihombing, 2016). Sweet potato leaves contain 25.51% crude protein and various other important nutrients, but they also contain anti-nutrient substances such as tannins. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of giving of leaf and stems sweet potato meal (SPM) on performa and income over feed costs (IOFC) in the grower pig. A total of 12 female landrace pigs aged 3-4 months with an average body weight of 55.5 kg (CV = 24.23%) were used in this study. The experimental method used a randomized block design, with 4 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments tried consisted of R0: ration without sweet potato leaf and stems meal sweet potato (SPM), R1: ration 5% (SPM), R2: ration 10% (SPM) meal, R3: ration 15% (SPM). The variables studied were performa and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC).The variables measured are ration consumption, body weight gain, ration conversion and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC). The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the treatment had no significant effect (P>0.05) on feed consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion and Income Over Feed Cost of research pigs. It can be concluded that the use of leaf and stems meal sweet potato 5%, 15% in pig rations provide the same response to provide the same effect on body weight gain, ration conversion and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC). leaves and stems sweet potato can be used up to 15%.
