Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Diabetes melitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels caused by disruption of the pancreas in producing insulin. Alloxan is a substrate that can trigger the condition of hyperglycemia which can cause diabetes because of its toxic nature to pancreatic beta cells. The aim of this study to find out about the effect of soursop leaf (Annona muricata Linn) extract in repaired to pancreatic tissue damage of male wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced by alloxan. Method : 24 male Wistar rats, divided into 3 groups : K(-) group that no treatment, K(+) group that induced by alloxan dose 150mg/kgBW and K(p) group that induced by alloxan dose 150mg/kgBW and given soursop leaf extract dose 150mg/kgBW. Result : there was significant difference (p = 0.001) of pancreatic tissue damage measured by histopathologic score between group of no treatment rats compared to the group of rats induced by alloxan. There was a significant difference of pancreatic tissue damage measured by histopatology score group of rats induced by alloxan compared to group of rats induced by alloxan and given soursop leaf extract. Conclusion : the administration of alloxan significantly increases the pancreatic tissue damage and the administration of soursop leaf extract can improve pancreatic tissue damage measured by histopathology score because soursop leaf extract contains flavonoids and tannins which function as antioxidants.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Stroke is one of ten diseases that cause death in the world. Based on the WHO report there were 6.7 million deaths because strokes from the total deaths caused by non-communicable diseases. Based on the pathophysiology of acute ischemic stroke, leukocytes play an important role in the deterioration and clinical manifestations of patients by releasing inflammatory mediators, plugging mechanism in microcirculation, and vasoconstriction. Method: This study was using cross-sectional design. The sampling technique was purposive sampling with a total sample of 34 ischemic stroke patients. Collecting data leukocyte count using laboratory examination and scoring of severity ischemic stroke patient by using National Institute Of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score. Result : the study showed 24 (70.6%) ischemic stroke patients with normal leukocyte counts, and 10 (29.4%) ischemic stroke patients with leukocytosis. 18 (52.9%) patients had mild ischemic stroke severity, 10 (29.4%) patients had moderate ischemic stroke severity, 6 (17.6%) patients had severe ischemic stroke severity. Results of the statistical analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between leukocyte count with severity of stroke based on the NIHSS score p = 0.006 <α (0.05). Conclusion : There was a significant correlation between leukocyte count with severity of stroke based on the NIHSS score.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background : HIV / AIDS is a public health problem that needs serious attention from the government. Besides to conventional medicine people with HIV / AIDS often use complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) in order to increase the qualityhealth. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) uses natural ingredients, not only restricted to herbal plants, but also includes the use of other natural vitamins and minerals. Compared to conventional treatments, CAM therapy is more save to use because it does not cause serious side effects. The purpose of this study was to know what are the effects of providing CAM education to ODHA at the Jambi Kanti Sehati Sejati Foundation. Method:This research was a quasi-experimental one type pretest-posttest type of research and is a type of quantitative descriptive study with prospective data collection. There were 35 ODHA who were respondents in this study and registered as members of the Jambi Kanti Sehati Sejati Foundation. Results: on demographic characteristics and CAM knowledge were obtained from questionnaires that given before and after giving the education, and proved by paired T test so that significance values ≤ 0.05 were obtained. Conclusion :there is the influence of education on CAM knowledge in HIV suffererof

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background : Dengue virus infection is still a health problem in Surabaya. On 2015 Insidence Rate (IR) for Surabaya is 22.50 and the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is 2%. This figure has decreased compared to 2014, but has not met the target achievement indicator for the P2DBD target CFR <1%. Method : The study was conducted in the rainy season, May 2015 in several Puskesmas areas in Surabaya. Samples were randomly selected as many as 378 houses spread in eight health centers (Pegirian, Krembangan Selatan, Hamlet Wall, Tambak Rejo, Putat Jaya, Simomulyo, Sawahan and Tanahkali Kedinding). The larvae survey was conducted using the single larva method. Larvae were taken from breeding sites and stored in specimen bottles for species identification at the Parasitology Laboratory Faculty of Medicine Universitas Airlangga. Result : The highest House Index (HI) was obtained (60.46%) or the 39.54% larvae free rate in Simomulyo and the lowest HI (33.33%) or 66.67% ABJ in Pegirian Puskesmas. Larvae species identification showed 100% was Aedes aegypti. The high HI value at the Simomulyo Health Center is not in line with the number of cases of dengue virus infection in 2015 which was 4 cases. Whereas in Pegirian Health Center with the lowest HI value found 11 cases. Discussion : These results could be due to the possibility because the study did not calculate larval density and high population mobility in the area.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Hypertension prevalence in Indonesia is increasing to reach 25.8% in the population aged 18 years and over. Amlodipine is one of the drugs for hypertension therapy which is included in the Calcium Channel Blocker (CCB) class. The use of antihypertensive medication itself is one of the risk factors that cause dry eye syndrome. Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of the use of antihypertensive drugs on dry eye syndrome in patients with hypertension at Jagir Public Health Center in Surabaya working area. Methods: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional method. The subjects in this study were 48 respondents found divided into 2 groups namely, the group taking antihypertensive drugs> 6 months and not taking medication. The DEQ-5 questionnaire was completed and Schirmer I was examined. Results: Descriptive analysis of the Schirmer I test for the frequency of dry eye syndrome was higher in respondents who took antihypertensive drugs than those who did not take antihypertensive drugs. The results of statistical analysis using the chisquare test of significance that is equal to <0.001 or it can be said that p <α (0.05), indicates there is an effect of antihypertensive drug administration on dry eye syndrome based on the Schirmer test in hypertension patients at Jagir Public Health Center in Surabaya.. Conclusion: The use of antihypertensive drugs has an effect on dry eye syndrome in patients with hypertension at the Jagir Public Health Center in Surabaya

Abstract

Abstract Background: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as antiseptic has been used frequently to clean woundsin in hospitals and clinics. Hydrogen peroxide has the effectof strong oxidative that can kill pathogens. It can clean up debris and necrotic tissuesin wounds. Hydrogen peroxidealso has hemostatic effect that can help to stop bleeding. Besides antiseptic effects, hydrogen peroxide i s suspected of having negative effect in wound healing. Hydrogen peroxide presumably could cause delayed wound healing by exudate formation and delayed epithelial growth. Method: This study was conducted in the laboratory using 48 white mice that were divided into 2 groups. All the mice were purposely wounded. Afterwards in one group the wounds were clean up using hydrogen peroxide, while in the other group without hydrogen peroxide as control. The wounds of both groups were observed on day 1, day 3 and day 7. On day 1 and day 3, both groups did not show significant difference. Result : on day 7 showed that the wound healing in hydrogen peroxide group were delayed. Fifty percent of them had the formation of exudate and 62.5% of them showed delayed epithelial growth. Conclusion : This study could show hydrogen peroxide as wound antiseptic has delayed wound healing effect.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a functional product that is highly favored and have been widely applied in the everyday lives of society. The increase of the frequencies and duration of VCO consumption is suspected that VCO could negatively impact the target organ. The kidney is a vital organ in the human body, it is responsible for clearing out the residual waste products of metabolism in the body. The evalution of the kidney‟s function can be done through the measurement of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of VCO administration on kidney function. Method: 24 male wistar rats that are divided into 4 groups, which are listed as follows, K(-) or a negative-controlled group, P(1) or the first group of rats that are given VCO with a dose of 2mL/200gr of the rats‟ total BW/day, P(2) or the second group of rats that are given VCO with a dose of 3mL/200gr of the rats‟ total BW/day, and P(3) or the third group of rats that are given VCO with a dose of 4mL/200gr of the rats‟ total BW/day for 28 day Results: Administrating VCO with a dose of 2mL/200gr and 3mL/200gr of the rats‟ total BW/day does not affect the blood‟s creatinine level while with a dose of 4mL/200gr of the rats‟ total BW/day decreases the blood‟s creatinine level. Administrating VCO with a dose of 2 mL/200gr, 3 mL/200gr, and 4 mL/200gr of the rats‟ total BW/day does not affect the level of blood urea nitrogen. Conclusion: Administration of VCO dose of 4 mL / 200 g BW rat / day significantly decreased blood creatinine levels in experimental animals, while other doses did not affect the creatinine levels or blood urea nitrogen levels

Abstract

Abstract Background: Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the second most common cause of death in the world. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the major risk factor for embolic stroke. Patients with atrial fibrillation have a 5 times much more risk of stroke to those who do not have atrial fibrillation. Case Report: A 40-year-old woman came to the Emergency Unit with chief complaints the left-sided limbs suddenly weakened while cooking. On ECG examination there is an irregular rhythm (irregular P-P), leading to an atrial fibrillation. CT scan revealed hypodense lesions on the temporal part of the left side, leading to a cerebral infarction. Discussion: AF puts patients at an increased risk for stroke because blood cannot be properly pumped, which caused stagnation and formed a blood clot. This clot can be released from ventricle and travel to the other organ via artery, including brain and block the blood flow which can result a infarct stroke. Conclusion: Close supervision and routine control are needed for patients with heart rhythm disorders, especially atrial fibrillation to prevent embolic stroke
