Abstract

Basil is one type of vegetable that can be consumed without any processing. Unprocessed vegetables can cause contamination from Coliform bacteria. This study aimed to determine the number and identification of coliform fecal bacteria as a biological indicator suitable for consumption. This study used descriptive observational with a cross-sectional from November 2020 to March 2021. The research locations are from 8 Traditional Markets in Jember and the Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine Jember University. The sample in this study consisted of 40 samples from basil vegetable sellers. The Most Probable Number method was carried out in two stages in this study. First, a presumptive test using lactose broth, and two, a complete test using Eosin Methylene Blue. The results of the presumptive test obtained 100% of the number of MPNs that exceeded the maximum limit for food quality suitable for consumption, according to BPOM. The complete test results showed that 82.5% of basil was contaminated with fecal coliform bacteria, namely Escherichia coli. Practically all the samples were highly infected with coliform bacteria. Suggestions the community is expected to pay attention to techniques in washing and processing basil vegetables properly to break the chain of bacterial contamination

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is the primary etiology of coronary heart disease and can be detected by marker of LpPLA2. There is a unique phenomenon in Papua: patients of CHD in Papua are the lowest amount in Indonesia, although they consume a lot of cholesterol from pigs. This is expected because the Papuans consume purple sweet potato that contains antioxidants to prevent atherosclerosis. The objective of this experiment is to prove that the Purple Sweet Potato Extract (Ipoema Batatas L.) has a significant effect on Lp-PLA2 in the White Male Rats (Rattus novergicus Wistar strain) Model of Atherosclerosis. This study applied experimental research using Post Test Only Control Group Design with a large sample of 35 rats divided into five groups with the inclusion criteria. Variables taken for this experiment are LpPLA2 ‘s levels of positive control, negative control, and the treatment from groups 1,2 and 3. Methods of assessment LpPLA2 levels by Elisa-kit. Analysis of the test data using one-way ANOVA, post-hoc, and correlations. The higher the dose of the extract of purple sweet potato is given, the lower the levels of LpPLA2 mice. The effect of extract of purple sweet potato (Ipoema batatas) can reduce levels of LpPLA2 white male rats (Rattus novergicus Wistar strain) model of atherosclerosis.

Abstract

Dry eye disease (DED) is a disorder of the tear film caused by reduced tear production giving complaints that the eyes feel dry, and gritty and cause a burning sensation, which is one of the reasons patients come to see a doctor. The causes of DED are very multifactorial where ocular, anatomical, systemic, and environmental factors have been reported by several studies which state that there is a relationship between environmental factors such as pollutants from motorized vehicles having a role in the incidence of increased DED. Sumenep Regency was once a city of a thousand pedicabs and until now they are still the favorite choice for the people there. This research is an analytic observational with a cross-sectional approach. Data on the characteristics of the study subjects, length of work, and degree of DED complaints were collected and DED complaints were assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire. The data were processed and analyzed using the Spearman correlation test to determine the effect of length of service on the level of DED complaints. A moderate strength (Spearman correlation = 0.441) relationship exists between the length of work and the degree of DED complaints in pedicab drivers.

Abstract

In our geographic region, anemia is a prevalent medical condition, and our study focuses on the use of comprehensive hematological parameters, including the RBC Histogram and peripheral blood smears, as an initial diagnostic approach to promptly identify and enhance cost-effectiveness in anemia diagnosis. The aim of our study is to elucidate the correlation between the RBC Histogram and Peripheral Blood Smear analyses in diagnosing anemia. We examined 200 subjects, utilizing a 5-part Fully Automated Hematology Analyzer for CBC assessments and employing Field's staining technique for peripheral blood smears. Among the 200 anemia cases, 62% presented with Microcytic Hypochromic Anemia, 4.5% with Macrocytic Anemia, 16.5% with Normocytic Normochromic Anemia, 7.5% with Dimorphic Anemia, 7% with Hemolytic Anemia, and 2.5% with Pancytopenia. Microcytic Hypochromic Anemia cases displayed a leftward shift in the RBC Histogram, while Macrocytic Anemia cases exhibited a pronounced rightward shift. Hemolytic Anemia cases were characterized by either a broad-based or bimodal peak in the histogram. In conclusion, the combined use of RBC Histogram analysis and peripheral blood smear scrutiny is a highly valuable diagnostic tool for a spectrum of hematological disorders, with Fully Automated Hematology Analyzers proving beneficial and dependable for peripheral smear evaluation.
