Abstract

Asbabun nuzul plays a crucial role in the hermeneutical approaches of Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd and Hasan Hanafi. Qur’anic interpretation, which is inherently dynamic, goes beyond literal meanings by emphasizing contextual relevance in contemporary discourse. For progressive exegetes such as Abu Zayd and Hanafi, asbabun nuzul narratives foster socio-historical awareness that prevents rigid, purely linguistic interpretations. This study employs a comparative qualitative method through library research, drawing on both primary and secondary sources including books, theses, and scholarly articles. The research yields two main findings. First, asbabun nuzul functions as a dynamic hermeneutical instrument. Abu Zayd treats it as a methodological step in interpreting the Qur’anic text, whereas Hanafi employs it as a foundational tool for practical engagement. Second, in reconstructing the understanding of the stages of alcohol (khamr) prohibition, Abu Zayd identifies three legislative phases (tasyri') and positions asbabun nuzul as complementary, filling interpretive gaps between verses. In contrast, Hanafi interprets the three related verses as responses to the evolving social reality of Arab society at the time, using asbabun nuzul as a contextualizing mechanism. This comparison highlights their shared commitment to contextual interpretation while reflecting differing emphases in hermeneutical application.

Abstract

The hudud verses in the Qur’an, such as the prescribed punishment in Islamic law for theft, which includes hand amputation, are often the subject of debate regarding their application in the modern legal system, especially in Indonesia. As a country with a majority Muslim population, Indonesia is faced with a significant challenge to balance the application of sharia with a national legal system influenced by Western laws and local customs. This study analyzes Hasbi Ash-Shiddiqiey's interpretation of the hudud verse in Tafsir An-Nur. This study examines how Hasbi contextualizes the application of hudud law by considering maqasid asy-syari’ah, as well as Indonesia's complex and diverse socio-legal conditions. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with an in-depth analysis of the text of Tafsir An-Nur through the framework of maqasid asy-syari’ah. The study results revealed that Hasbi was not fixated on literal interpretation, but rather considered social factors, such as poverty and social justice, in the application of hudud. The contextual approach emphasizes the importance of protecting fundamental rights and people's welfare, thus making Tafsir An-Nur relevant in Indonesia's pluralistic legal system.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a model of the Structure of Hujjah al-Qira’at of Sheikh Mahfudz al-Tarmasi. To find out the authority of Muqri’ nusantara, the authority of Hujjah al-Qira’at (Tawjih al-Qira’at) of Sheikh Mahfudz is urgently studied as a model, considering that he lived in an era of strengthening the network of Middle Eastern and Indonesian Ulama. With the analysis of Argumentation theory, the researcher wants to trace the structure of the argument of Hujjah al-Qira’at of Sheikh Mahfudz, its originality and dynamics/Tajdid as evidence of his authority. The analysis methods used are interpretive and inductive methods. The results of the study show that first, Sheikh Mahfudz has authority in the field of Qira’at Science both riwayah and dirayah. In terms of riwayah he has a chain of chains that are connected to the Prophet. In terms of his personality, he has an authoritative Hujjah al-Qira’at based on a very complex Hujjah component in relying on qira’at to previous muqri’ who are also authoritative. Second, based on the theory of argumentation, the authority of Sheikh Mahfudz’s argument in Hujjah al-Qira’at lies in the systematic and completeness of his argumentation structure pattern which is more dynamic than his predecessors, in this case he has originality and carries out Tajdid.

Abstract

The development of technology and the progress of time have influenced various fields of education, including education and learning of the Quran for individuals with visual impairments. The Braille system of the Quran that based on raised dots on paper has been successfully converted by technology’s experts into a digital code to simplify access for the visually impaired in Quranic learning. This digitization is organized into a technological device called the Electronic Braille Qur’an, serving as a new medium currently being developed in several Islamic countries. This writing will conduct an exploration and preliminary introduction to the Electronic Braille Quran using a descriptive analytical method. The aim is to provide new information that can be considered as an option or alternative in Quranic learning for individuals with visual impairments. Research findings indicate that there are currently two electronic Braille Qurans being developed in Islamic countries, the EBraille Quran and the EBraille Haramain Quran. Both devices are portable and store a digital database of Braille code for the Quran. They are designed to assist the role of the print version of the Braille Quran, which is not yet user-friendly for individuals with visual impairments. Each of these Braille Qurans has its own advantages and strengths. However, the use of EBraille Haramain is more suitable for simply reading the Quran due to its smaller and more portable size. On the other hand, the EBraille Quran is more suitable for the teaching and learning process as it is supported by a system that facilitates interaction and communication between teachers and students.

Abstract

This study aims to examine: first, the history of the tradition of congregational qada prayers. Second, the implementation of the tradition of congregational qada prayers. Third, the wisdom behind the tradition of congregational qada prayer. The main issue in this study is the practice of congregational qada prayer, which has not been studied in depth, both in terms of history, implementation, and the values contained therein, as well as the controversy surrounding the permissibility of congregational qada prayer in the perspective of Islamic law. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research using a descriptive approach and ethnographic study. This research was conducted at the Baiturrohmah Mosque in Jekulo Pulutan Village. Data collection was carried out using interviews, observation, and documentation, and then described using data reduction, data presentation, verification, and conclusions. After that, several techniques were used to test the validity of the data, including extension, participation, persistence of observation, and triangulation. The results of this study show that, first, this tradition originated from the example set by Kyai Noor Hadi's teacher, Mbah Yasin, to emphasize the importance of fulfilling religious obligations, including missed fardhu prayers. Second, congregational qada prayers do not contain elements of bid’ah and include tarekat practices, including the Syattariyah and Rifaiyyah tarekat. Third, the social and spiritual dimensions found in the tradition of congregational qada prayers include an increase in spiritual values and improvement in worship, humanism, friendship and socialization, the distribution of alms and humility, and physiological and psychological improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the right to life of flora as ecological subjects within the framework of thematic Qur’anic exegesis and to formulate a new eco-theological paradigm to address deforestation and its global implications. The employed methodology is qualitative and interpretative, with descriptive analysis of three key verses: QS. ar-Rahman: 6, QS. al-An‘am: 99, and QS. al-Baqarah: 205. Empirical deforestation data from Indonesia (KLHK, GFW) are integrated with classical and contemporary exegeses to understand the position of plants in the Qur’anic cosmology. Findings reveal that the Qur’an positions flora not merely as passive objects but as spiritual beings that prostrate, sources of divine mercy, and entities whose right to life must be preserved. This eco-theological concept affirms plants as subjects of worship, ecosystem supporters, and moral entities within the divine order. The study develops a thematic eco-theological exegesis framework that combines up-to-date deforestation data with Qur’anic analysis, offering an interdisciplinary perspective for environmental conservation. Limitations include a textual scope confined to three verses and the absence of field verification; future research is recommended to incorporate quantitative surveys of affected communities and extend textual analysis to relevant hadith and additional Qur’anic verses on environmental preservation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the symbolic and intertextual meaning of Baal in the story of Prophet Elijah/Ilyas in the Qur’an and the Bible. Utilizing Julia Kristeva’s intertextual theory and semiotic analysis, this qualitative research compares the theological and ideological narratives surrounding Baal in both scriptures. The study finds that Baal functions as a universal symbol of deviation from monotheism, presented dramatically in the Bible and concisely in the Qur’an. While the Bible narrates Baal as a mythological deity defeated in a dramatic confrontation, the Qur’an reinterprets Baal as a symbol of shirk, emphasizing ideological purity. The findings reveal not only structural narrative similarities but also reinterpretations that align with each religious framework. This research contributes to the understanding of prophetic continuity and religious symbolism in the Abrahamic traditions, offering new insights into scriptural dialogue through intertextuality.

Abstract

This study explores QS al-Ma’un (107:1-7) through the lens of Hanafi’s liberation hermeneutics to critique the practice of digital religiosity on social media. The background of the study stems from the paradox of worship: while expanding spiritual access, online worship practices are often ritualistic, symbolic, and lack a strong dimension of social solidarity. This research employs a qualitative, descriptive-analytical method, applying Hanafi’s three levels of hermeneutics: historical (the socio-historical context of QS al-Ma’un’s revelation), eidetic (the universal meaning), and practical (its application to digital phenomena). The findings indicate that the values of al-Ma’un, which condemn prayer performed without concern for the poor and orphans, are highly relevant in critiquing “digital ritualization” (e.g., exhibitionist content, automated charity, and similar acts) that tends to focus on self-image and algorithms rather than genuine social transformation. The study also acknowledges the positive potential of digital spaces as platforms for disseminating inclusive religious values, provided they are guided by critical awareness. This research contributes to the extension of liberation hermeneutics' applicability to digital religiosity, offering a new evaluative framework for contemporary worship practices based on principles of justice, empathy, and social commitment. The study’s implications underscore the need to reconstruct digital worship practices as expressions of concrete solidarity, aiming to foster a liberatory form of religiosity in the digital age.

Abstract

This study examines the codicological and textological aspects of the mushaf Al-Qur’an manuscript of Mbah Syatawi with the aim of understanding its physical characteristics, writing techniques, and the use of rasm, qira`at, scholia, and syakl. This research uses a qualitative approach, using field research methods that focus on collecting primary data through structured interviews with sources directly related to the manuscript, field observations, and digital documentation. The main focus of the research is the manuscript belonging to Mbah Syatawi. The codicological approach is used to analyze the physical aspects of the manuscript such as materials, ink, and illumination, while the textological approach focuses on the writing rules, rasm mushaf (script style), and the qira`at tradition followed. The results show that the manuscript consists of two collections estimated to be over a century old. The inks used are varied, with black ink as the primary color for the Qur’anic text, red ink for scholia and diacritical marks (syakl), and other colors applied to illuminations found on the beginning, middle, and end pages. In terms of writing style, the manuscript employs a mixed rasm combining rasm imla’i and rasm ‘usmani, particularly in the application of rules such as al-Hazf, al-Ziyadah, hamzah, al-Ibdal, and al-Fasl wa al-Wasl. Regarding qira`at, the manuscript follows the qira`at of Imam 'Asim through the transmission line of Imam Hafs. These findings enrich the study of classical mushaf manuscripts in Indonesia, providing significant contributions to preservation efforts, philological studies, and the faithful reproduction of historical manuscripts.
