Abstract

Every child will experience a process of development and language acquisition from birth to adulthood. Language development is related to cognitive development which greatly influences the development of language skills (linguistic skills). Linguistic intelligence is also called   language intelligence, namely the ability to use words effectively both orally and in writing. This intelligence includes sensitivity to the meaning of words, word order, sound, rhythm and intonation of spoken words, including the ability to understand the power of words in changing states of mind and conveying information (Gardner, 2011).  The aims of this research is to describe linguistic intelligence in 8 year old children, as well as to determine their interpersonal abilities, level of critical thinking and parenting style factors that influence them. An overview of the communication development of children aged 7-8 years is expected to be provided by the research in order to inform parents about their children's developmental needs. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through observation, recording stories and documentation.  The unit of analysis in this research is two children with different linguistic abilities and parenting styles (AL and RD). The research results show the role of parenting styles in supporting children's linguistic skills   by   building   a   language   environment   that   is   appropriate   to   the development level of 8 years old children (early childhood stage).  Democratic parenting style allows children to express their thoughts freely to their parents.

Abstract

Social criticism of the phenomenon happened on social media with popularized hashtags like #percumalaporpolisi on Twitter. Police officer incompetence in a sexual assault case in Luwu Timur, South Sulawesi, triggers citizens to create this hashtag. This research aims to describe the negative representation of Police officers by Indonesian Twitter users through #percumalaporpolisi. The qualitative research method used in this research is Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis theory. Indonesian Police officers explicitly and implicitly represented through words usage, and/or sentences in negative ways. On the other side, Indonesian netizens (Twitter users) have been known for their distrust towards police officers for a long time, tending to use harsh words, posting their disagreement towards something harshly, and becoming the most impolite netizens in southeast Asia. Lastly, Police officers have had several controversial histories, followed by the exposed scandal of sexual harassment in Luwu Timur, explained as a social practice dimension. The negative representations are exposed both explicitly and implicitly through words and sentences. The representations were affected by how netizens interacted on social media perceiving police officers and the behavior of the netizens. It was getting worse as scandals in the police institutions were also supported by police impunity.

Abstract

This study examines the use of euphemisms in tweets posted by international football clubs in response to the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy. Guided by Allan and Burridge's (2012) theory, fifteen tweets were analyzed and classified based on the types of euphemisms employed. The research identifies various euphemisms, including hyperboles, distortions, and metaphors, used to soften the impact of tragic events and convey condolences. Through a thorough analysis, the study explores the purposes of euphemisms in online communication and their effectiveness in conveying emotions while maintaining a respectful tone. The research also considers the influence of social media platforms on language variation and expression, highlighting Twitter's role as a platform for emotional expression. Furthermore, the study provides insights into communication dynamics in online spaces. It suggests avenues for future research to explore euphemism topics using alternative theoretical frameworks and sources beyond social media platforms. Overall, this research contributes to understanding how euphemistic language is utilized in digital discourse and its implications for online communication strategies.

Abstract

The national news media is very influential in changing people's views in determining the choice of presidential and vice presidential candidates for 2024.  The third presidential debate held at Istora Senayan Jakarta went well. This research aims to: (1) reveal Robert Entmant's framing analysis and framing devices in the news of presidential candidate 01 in 2024 on online news sites kbanews and tirto.id, (2) reveal the reasons behind the differences between kbanews and tirto.id in framing news about presidential candidate 01 in 2024. This type of research is qualitative, with primary data sources from  online news sites, kbanews and Tirto.id. The data collection techniques used are reading and recording. While the data analysis technique goes through 3 stages, namely reducing data, describing data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study found two different forms of framing. The online news media site kbanews tends to side with presidential candidate number 01, as can be seen from the diction used in the third debate. The media is proud of Anies Baswedan who appeared convincing. Meanwhile, the online news media site tirto.id tends to criticize Anies Baswedan for talking about Indonesia's defense system. The reason for the difference in the news framing of the two media is that the KBA News news media basically produces news that focuses on positive things about Anies Baswedan, while tirto.id is media that tries to be neutral in reporting on existing issues.

Abstract

The lower-class society (wong cilik) consists of impoverished individuals struggling to meet their daily needs. This group often faces mistreatment due to social structures. This study aims to identify the types of social criticism of the lower-class society, specifically poverty, low morals, and injustice in the novel Purwacintraka. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The theory used is Alan Swingewood's sociology of literature theory, utilizing reading and note-taking techniques. The data consisted of text from the novel Purwacintraka by Tulus Setiyadi. Miles & Huberman's model of analysis was used to explore social criticism within the text. The research results indicated that social criticism encompasses poverty, low morals, and injustice. These criticisms were depicted through social issues reflected in the novel Purwacintraka, such as inadequate housing, difficulty in meeting food and educational expenses. Poverty also leads to moral decline, resulting in negative actions such as gambling and prostitution. The injustice described involved the upper-class society oppressing and discriminating against the lower-class society due to social structures. This research served as a means of critique to raise awareness of the social inequality experienced by the lower-class society as depicted in the novel.

Abstract

The translation of the modalities contained in a literary work needs to be done with consideration. This is caused by the modalities used to express the speaker's feelings will be different in each language. This paper discusses the translation of modalities contained in Japanese novels Kimi no Suizō wo Tabetai, which are translated into Indonesian. In fulfilling the objectives of the study, descriptive analysis was applied, and all stages of analysis were done qualitatively. The findings of this study reveal that Japanese modalities can be translated in Indonesian into three ways. First, the modality is translated into similar modalities in Indonesian. Second, the modalities are translated into Indonesian using different modalities. Third, Japanese modalities that cannot be translated into Indonesian are translated in the basic form without modality markers. Translation of modalities which are translated into different modalities mostly occurs in deontic modality which is translated into intentional modality. This happens because the translator wants to refine the command into a request or permission by adding the words please ‘tolong’, (can’t you) try ‘coba’ and bisakah ‘can’t you’.  In translating modalities, things that must be considered apart from equivalence are the level of politeness, the relationship between the speaker - the interlocutor, and the level of formality.
