Abstract

This article describes the exploration of religious tolerance from the perspective of Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP; Padang State University) students. The research is motivated by the development of a diverse conception of religious tolerance based on  authority of the state and the culture of local communities. Students are part of the academic community that are constantly in flux. However, the conception of religious tolerance from a student's perspective has not been developed comprehensively, so further studies are needed to understand how students explore religious tolerance at UNP. This research method uses a qualitative approach.  The subject of this study are the active students across different study programs; they are also cross-organizations, cross-religious and cross-cultural. We have also selected  the active lecturers registered at UNP. Sampling was conducted with snowball sampling technique. Data collection uses in-depth  interviews and observation.. The data analysis technique uses descriptive analysis. The results of this study reveal the indicators of religious tolerance from the perspective of UNP students, namely, being open toward differences, having mutual respect, having independence in acting, and giving the freedom for people to carry out worship, and prioritizing positive interaction between individuals and interfaith groups. The results of this study can be used to construct student religious tolerance assessments.

Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia in managing the pilgrimage. Hajj is a sector that makes a significant contribution to the economy of Saudi Arabia. However, the increasing number of pilgrims every year makes managing the pilgrimage more difficult and makes Saudi Arabia face regional pressure in the form of internationalizing the management of the pilgrimage. During regional pressure, Saudi Arabia is trying to diversify its economy through Saudi Vision 2030 which contains plans to improve the governance of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. Indonesia, one of the countries that cares about pilgrims, is often faced with facts related to the inefficient management and services of Hajj. Through the concept of national interest, this research shows that the internationalization pressure of hajj has become a stimulus for Saudi Arabia in improving the management of its hajj in line with its 2030 vision which also focuses on hajj issues. The collaboration of these two factors has made Indonesia, a close partner of Saudi Arabia in hajj activities, will have a positive effect in the form of increased aspects of service and mobility that will make it easier for Indonesian pilgrims to perform the pilgrimage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social cohesiveness of Indonesian Muslim communities during Ramadan. Moral sense, sense of belonging, social har mony, sense of security, and tolerance in this study are used as indicators to understand social cohesiveness.  Data were collected through questionnaires with 600 respondents randomly selected in three districts/cities in West Sumatra and Yogyakarta provinces. The study found that two indicators of social cohesion were in the high category, namely a sense of morality (3.39 or 84.75%) and social harmony (3.30 or 82.50%), while three other indicators of social cohesion were in the medium category, namely a sense of belonging (2.34 or 58.50%), a sense of security (2.54 or 63.50%), and tolerance (2.70 or 67.50%). Thus, the social cohesion of the Muslim community during Ramadan is in the moderate category, with an average of 2.85 or equivalent to 71.17 percent. This study concludes that Ramadan has not contributed significantly to building social cohesiveness. The ambiguity of faith, which is ambiguous in understanding reality; sacred and profane, can be identified as one of the reasons why Ramadan has not been able to build social cohesiveness.

Abstract

This study was conducted to seek reemerging threats of JI in recent years, counterintelligence taken by police and military convergence. Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) is an Islamist extremist group in Indonesia that seeks to overthrow the government and create a pan-Islamic state in Southeast Asia. It has ideological origins in the Darul Islam (DI) movement of the 1950s and 1960s, in which insurgents of West Javanese descent carried out a violent campaign that attempted to establish an Islamic state in Indonesia. Despite the arrest of more than 100 Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) members in the last two years, the militant organization appears resilient, partly due to its hierarchical organizational structure. Such a structure has enabled JI to have a strong agenda-setting capacity and exercise accountability and specialization within its hierarchy. This study is qualitative in nature. I conducted in-depth library and fieldwork research with former JI operatives and Police (POLRI & DENSUS 88, PDRM) officers. My findings show the survival patterns JI in the context of operations, which includes personal, political, economic, and community structure within their circle. To curb the threat of JI, I would like to suggest the Government of Indonesia and regional members devise an action plan to address the terrorist-related issues

Abstract

This article attempts to analyze how Indonesian Muslim scholars, such as Kiai Hasyim Muzadiwith his Nahdlatul Ulama background, not only profoundly understand the term of Moderate Islam but also implement this term within the Indonesian context. Data were obtained from interviews with Kiai Hasyim’s friends, family and documents on his unpublished textual speeches, notes, and comments on media. This study showed that moderate Islam is a term that has different meanings and has raised an intense debate among Muslim scholars. For instance, some Muslim scholars and activists in the United States even try to avoid using this term, and some use it with high caution. Unlike their colleagues in other countries, Indonesian scholars use this term as an icon of their activism and to label their respected organizations appropriated with this term. Using the Qur’anic term of Islam Rahmatan lil Alamin, Kiai Hasyim Muzadi introduces and promotes the moderate Islamic teachings to Indonesian Muslim and global societies. He believes that the core of Islamic teaching is in its moderate teachings and values. He argues that only with this moderate values and teaching, Islam will respond to the contextual problem faced by Muslims in the World.

Abstract

The focus of the research is the development of the subject "Islam and Religious Moderation" in Islamic Education study program at IAIN Kerinci and learning tools, namely Rencana Pembelajaran Semester (RPS, Semester Learning Plan) and course syllabus. In conducting the research, the research and development (R&D) approach is used as a basic reference for developing lecture programs through observation or survey methods, trials and classroom actions. From the results and research analysis, it can be concluded that in the development of a course there are several things that must become the product of development including the course structure, RPS, syllabus, and course-teaching materials of course. In terms of the development of the Islamic and Religious Moderation course based on the Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (MBKM, Independent learning – Independent campus) program, theoretical and practical analysis of the guidelines, instructions, and implementation of religious moderation and MBKM is needed. The product development courses are further refined through validation by curriculum and religious education experts and theoretical validation through journal articles of international repute as comparisons.

Abstract

This article aims to answer the question of whether a multicultural perspective has been implemented in higher education. Muhammadiyah, an Islamic organization, has a strategic role in building and developing multicultural education in Indonesia. Ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity is critical for Muhammadiyah Education, so a multicultural perspective becomes the center of attention. Until now, the education practice organized by Muhammadiyah tries to practice a multicultural perspective so that it does not reject students from non-Muslim religions, diverse ethnicities, and varied cultures. All students are treated equally without being differentiated because they come from different religions and do not even have a Muhammadiyah background. This research is an analytical qualitative method with case studies approach. Therefore, teachers or lecturers, in providing knowledge and transferring values, need to      understand clearly the diversity of students or students they face.      Hence, a multicultural perspective becomes one of the requirements for lecturers or teachers to understand. This article used the perspective of social capital theory from Pierre Bourdieu to analyze the capital used in multicultural education at Muhammadiyah Universities, such as Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.
