Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the implementation of religious moderation as a core strategy for character education at SDI Al-Fattah Payolebar, addressing growing concerns about declining students’ discipline and moral values. Grounded in Thomas Lickona’s theory of character education, this research offers a novel perspective by integrating daily spiritual routines, such as congregational prayers, Qur’anic recitation, and dhikr, with active teacher supervision and family involvement. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method with a case study design, and thematic analysis, data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that structured religious practices, when consistently reinforced by teachers and supported within the family environment, contribute significantly to the development of key moral traits, including religiosity, empathy, responsibility, and self-discipline. However, several challenges persist, particularly parental disengagement and inconsistencies in students’ behavioral internalization of these values. Theoretically, this study contributes to the discourse on moral education within Islamic educational. Practically, It offers a contextual model that may be adapted by similar educational institutions. the study concludes that collaboratively implemented religious habituation constitutes an effective approach to fostering holistic character development among students.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines how Sufi thought and practice contributed to the emergence of a pluralistic social order in medieval India. The Indian subcontinent has long been recognized for its rich cultural variety and religious differences. Sufism in the Indian subcontinent evolved as a powerful moral and spiritual movement that transcended sectarian and cultural boundaries. The primary objective of the research is to explore the ways in which Sufi teachings on love, service, and universal brotherhood functioned as a spiritual response to religious and cultural diversity. Methodologically, the study adopts a historical-analytical approach, drawing upon the writings of early Chishti Sufis, archival records, and the interpretations of modern scholars such as Khaliq Ahmad Nizami. Through a close reading of Sufi texts and a contextual analysis of their socio-religious milieu, the paper identifies how the khanqah system fostered social inclusivity and intercommunal harmony. The findings reveal that Sufi spirituality provided an ethical and emotional framework that enabled diverse communities to coexist without erasing their distinct identities. Ultimately, the paper argues that Sufism’s pluralistic ethos remains a vital model for addressing contemporary challenges of intolerance and fragmentation in multicultural societies.

Abstract

Abstract Interfaith marriage in Indonesia remains a deeply contested issue within legal and religious perspectives, particularly following the enactment of Law Number 1 of 1974 and the Supreme Court Circular Letter Number 2 of 2023, both of which reinforce prohibitive norms and impose stricter administrative procedures. In contrast to these state-centered regulations, the Tengger indigenous community on the slopes of Mount Bromo treats interfaith marriage as a legitimate tradition aimed at sustaining social harmony. While existing studies have predominantly focused on normative legal debates and theological controversies, limited attention has been paid to local cultural practices that offer alternative, lived models of coexistence. This gap is crucial because indigenous experiences provide socio-legal insights that are often overlooked in state-centered analyses. Addressing this gap, this article explores how interfaith marriage is understood and practiced within Tengger customary law, examines its implications for Indonesia’s national family law framework, and analyzes the idea of the “miniature Pancasila family” as an expression of legal pluralism at the community level. Drawing on qualitative socio-legal research conducted in Ngadas, Wonokerto, and Ngadisari, the findings show that communal harmony is preserved through the waralaga custom and the philosophical principle of rukun, alongside pragmatic administrative strategies, such as “temporary conversion”, employed to meet state requirements. These insights suggest that Indonesia’s family law could benefit from more contextual and pluralistic approaches that resonate more closely with Pancasila’s foundational values.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the challenges and strategic responses of Islamic religious education among Muslim minority communities in Western societies by focusing on the educational thought of Taha Jabir al-Alwani. Employing a qualitative library-based research approach, the study analyzes both primary and secondary sources related to al-Alwani’s writings on Islamic education and fiqh al-aqalliyyt. The findings reveal that al-Alwani advances a contextual, transformative, and integrative educational model grounded in five core principles: orientation toward maqṣid al-sharīʿah, epistemological renewal (tajdīd), the integration of religious and modern sciences, dialogical pedagogy, and a strong emphasis on ethical formation and social responsibility. Within this framework, Islamic education is conceived not merely as a mechanism for preserving religious identity, but as a means of enabling constructive engagement within pluralistic social settings. The novelty of this study lies in its articulation of the practical relevance of al-Alwani’s educational framework for Muslim minorities in Western contexts, an area that has received limited and unsystematic attention in previous studies. Overall, al-Alwani’s educational thought offers valuable insights for the development of adaptive and future-oriented Islamic education in responding to the challenges of modernity and diversity.

Abstract

Abstract

Divorce in interfaith marriages presents distinct challenges in the enforcement of child maintenance orders, particularly when religious differences between parents affect the rights of the child after divorce. In Indonesia and Malaysia, differences in legal systems and regulations governing post-divorce child maintenance have given rise to different forms of legal innovation in the enforcement of such rulings. In Indonesia, the main challenge lies in the dualism of the judicial system, which separates religious courts from civil courts. Meanwhile, Malaysia, despite its pluralistic legal framework, faces problems mainly in cases where the child is Muslim while the father is non-Muslim. This article offers a comparative analysis of the two countries in terms of legal innovation and the enforcement of child maintenance orders following divorce in interfaith marriages, with a particular focus on the role and practice of the Bahagian Sokongan Keluarga (BSK) in Malaysia. Through a comparative approach, this study highlights both similarities and differences in legal enforcement mechanisms and provides recommendations to enhance the protection of children’s rights in post-divorce child maintenance cases. This study finds that the fulfillment of child maintenance obligations in interfaith divorce cases, especially when the child is Muslim and the father is non-Muslim, presents complex legal issues. In Indonesia, the absence of a specialized institution similar to BSK results in enforcement of child support relying heavily on litigation processes, which are often hindered by jurisdictional and administrative limitations. Meanwhile, Malaysia, through BSK, has introduced administrative innovations, including mediation mechanisms and inter-agency coordination, which have accelerated the efficiency of child support fulfillment. Therefore, this recommends the establishment of a similar institutional unit in Indonesia, the harmonization of civil and Syariah data, and the development of standarized national operating procedures (SOPs) as reform efforts to better guarantee children’s rights in interfaith marriages cases.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the phenomenon of mawdu’ (fabricated) hadith in the digital landscape as an epistemic challenge to contemporary Islamic literacy. While digital transformation has greatly expanded access to hadith sources, it has simultaneously facilitated the rapid circulation of unverified religious content that often deviates from established scholarly methodologies. Employing a qualitative approach, this research combines a systematic literature review with limited observational analysis of digital religious content. Classical and contemporary literature on mawdu’ hadith, Ulum al-Hadith, and digital Islamic literacy are systematically analyzed to construct an epistemic framework for analysis. Illustrative empirical data was obtained through observation of hadith content circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, where hadith are often disseminated without scrutiny of their sanad, explanation of their quality, or consideration of their historical context. The research findings show that social media has become a new ecosystem in which the authority of hadith is determined more by algorithmic visibility than by scholarly verification. Low levels of digital Islamic literacy contribute significantly to the uncritical acceptance of fabricated hadith. This study confirms that comprehensive digital Islamic literacy is an important prerequisite for maintaining epistemic integrity and ensuring the responsible transmission of hadith in the digital age.
