Abstract

Abstract The Muhammadiyah Movement has become a moral and civilizational force in Indonesia; however, studies on its ethical foundations remain fragmented and have not yet been integrated in an interdisciplinary manner. This study aims to examine the ethical foundations and reformist ethos of Muhammadiyah through the perspectives of theology, philosophy, sociology, and education, as well as to formulate an integrated ethical model that connects theology, rationality, and social transformation. The study employs a qualitative approach based on a literature review. Data were collected through the identification, selection, and documentation of primary and secondary sources, then analyzed thematically. The research findings indicate that (1) the theological foundation is rooted in tawhid, al-Ma’un, and al-amr bi al-ma’ruf wa al-nahy ‘an al-munkar; (2) philosophically, Muhammadiyah harmonizes revelation and reason through the neo-akhlaqiyyah framework; (3) sociologically, this ethos is realized through anti-fatalism, community empowerment, and the formation of a modern Muslim middle class; and (4) institutionally, this ethos is embedded through 5,354 Muhammadiyah schools and 178 Muhammadiyah universities. The novelty of this research lies in its integrated theological-philosophical-sociological-educational model for understanding Islamic reform. The study affirms Muhammadiyah as a civilizational project that transforms Islamic ethics into sustainable social transformation for Indonesian society.

Abstract

Abstract This article examines how Daoed Joesoef mediated Islamic ethics and state rationality in postcolonial Indonesia. Using qualitative-interpretative intellectual history, it analyzes eight works through close reading, contextual reconstruction, and comparative interpretation. Findings show that Joesoef did not treat secularism as an exclusion of religion. He reframed it as ethical rationality that protects pluralism and prevents confessional capture while keeping state power morally accountable. Islam functions as a source of civic virtue—justice, trust, adab, responsibility, and service—rather than a juridical-state ideology. Joesoef translated these principles into educational statecraft through literacy, character formation, and institutional discipline. The article terms this synthesis "Islamic Rational Statecraft," demonstrating how an Indonesian Muslim intellectual transformed secularism into a contextual grammar of moral governance beyond the secular-state/Islamic-state binary.

Abstract

Abstract This article examines Joseph A. Massad’s thoughts on the relationship between Islam and liberalism, particularly the “democratic assault” on the Islamic world and the response of Islamic values. Massad argues that Western liberal claims regarding the undemocratic nature of Islam are not objective facts but rather genealogical constructions rooted in Orientalism and cultural imperialism. This study employs a descriptive-analytical qualitative method with a socio-intellectual approach. Primary data were obtained through a documentary study of Islam in Liberalism (2015), supported by literature on Islam and liberalism as well as postcolonial theory. The analysis employs Michel Foucault’s genealogy to trace the power-knowledge relations within Western democratic discourse. This study demonstrates that Massad deconstructs the Western narrative that positions Islam as the antithesis of democracy and reveals the efforts of the United States, the United Kingdom, and France to shape Islamic theology in accordance with their colonial and imperial interests. The main findings of this article indicate that (1) the construction of a “democratic West” identity always requires a “despotic Islam” as its antithesis; (2) Western powers’ efforts to modernize Islam constitute a form of covert cultural imperialism; and (3) a Foucauldian-based intellectual genealogical approach can uncover the hidden power relations behind the discourse on democracy and Islam. This article is expected to contribute to critical studies on the relationship between Islam and liberalism amid increasingly complex global geopolitical dynamics.

Abstract

The escalating global environmental crisis demands Qur’anic interpretations that effectively address contemporary ecological challenges. As the Qur’an often conveys its ecological messages implicitly, contextual interpretation is required to reveal its universal relevance. Using a descriptive-analytical library research design, this study applies Abdullah Saeed’s contextual hermeneutics. Saeed’s four-stage framework was selected over Fazlur Rahman’s double movement theory and Amina Wadud’s hermeneutics due to its granular analytical pathway, which integrates classical and contemporary exegesis, linguistic analysis, qirā’āt, mufradāt, literary context, and socio-historical backgrounds. The findings demonstrate that the Qur’an goes beyond encouraging earthly stewardship by assigning humans an ethical responsibility to maintain ecological balance and environmental sustainability. Based on these insights, this study proposes Eco-Civilizational Resonance Tafsir—an interpretive model that aligns Qur’anic ecological principles with environmental ethics, social responsibility, and sustainable development, thereby contributing to contemporary Islamic environmental discourse and ecological transformation.

Abstract

Abstract Religious moderation has become an important agenda in national policy and religious education discourse in Indonesia. However, its relationship with the formation of inclusive attitudes remains conceptually unclear, as tolerance, pluralism, peace education, and inclusive education are often used interchangeably. This article reconstructs religious moderation as a framework for fostering inclusive attitudes in religious education. It examines the construction of religious moderation in state policy and selected religious thought, clarifies its attributes and boundaries in relation to adjacent concepts, and synthesizes the interrelationship among these concepts into an educational framework. This study employs a non-empirical qualitative approach using conceptual framework analysis. The primary sources include policy documents and selected works by Nurcholish Madjid, M. Quraish Shihab, Alwi Shihab, and Tabita Kartika Christiani, supported by relevant scholarly literature. The analysis shows that religious moderation is an active, just, balanced, open, and responsible religious orientation, rather than passive neutrality or minimal tolerance. Its normative foundations include human dignity, justice, balance, freedom of religion, moral responsibility, and the rejection of violence. These foundations are translated into educational processes that are dialogical, reflective, participatory, and transformative. The article contributes a layered conceptual framework that positions inclusive attitudes as an educational orientation that still requires empirical testing across diverse educational contexts.
