Abstract

This study examines high school students' English writing skills after a month in an English course. The research used a qualitative methodology to analyse 10 student writings, assessing lexical density and readability levels, and their impact on comprehension and writing quality. Lexical density, the proportion of content words to function words, indicates informational richness, whereas readability evaluates the comprehensibility of text, measured by measures such as ASL and ASW. Results show that lexical density in student writings ranges between 48.54% and 56.07%, indicating moderately complex texts that may challenge learners depending on their proficiency. Texts with higher lexical density, characterized by frequent use of nouns and adjectives, present richer information, making them suitable for advanced learners but potentially difficult for beginners. Readability scores reveal that most texts are classified as "Very Easy" to "Easy," suggesting accessibility for lower-intermediate students. Only one text falls into the "Fairly Easy" category, indicating a progression toward more complex material. These findings show the need for teaching materials that match students' language skills, offering challenges to improve learning while staying understandable. The study suggests using glossaries or guiding questions for complex texts to help students of all levels understand better and learn more effectively.

Abstract

Metaphors are not merely decorative linguistic devices but play a significant role in shaping cognition and cultural understanding. The influence of linguistic background on thought processes is central to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, which posits that language shapes cognitive perception and cultural behaviour. This study aims to explore the relationship between language and cognition through the lens of temporal metaphors. By examining linguistic frameworks across diverse cultures, the research seeks to demonstrate how temporal metaphors influence cognitive processes, cultural practices, and perceptions of time. A qualitative approach was employed, synthesising theoretical and empirical literature on metaphor, linguistic relativity, and temporal cognition. The analysis focused on case studies from languages such as English, Mandarin, Hopi, and Aymara, highlighting both universal and culturally specific temporal metaphors. The study reveals that temporal metaphors vary significantly across languages, reflecting unique cultural perspectives while exhibiting shared cognitive patterns. For instance, English and Mandarin conceptualise time through horizontal and vertical orientations, respectively, while Hopi and Aymara temporal frameworks challenge conventional Western notions. The findings support the weaker form of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, showing that language influences thought without rigidly determining it. Furthermore, the research demonstrates that temporal metaphors are essential cognitive tools, shaping abstract concepts and influencing behaviour across cultural contexts.

Two types of newspapers were used in this study: Berita Harian/Berita Minggu Singapura (BH/BM S’pura) and Berita Harian/Berita Ahad Malaysia (BH/BA M’sia). Only commentary articles were selected as study materials, ensuring they were related to the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York that occurred on September 11, 2001. This study is limited to articles with such themes due to their similar context. The study explores the strategies employed by newspapers through their commentators to influence readers, enabling the newspapers to instill the propositions they aim to advance within the readers. This description is based on analytical findings regarding Attitude in Malay newspaper discourse contained within the texts. The study is grounded in Systemic-Functional Linguistics as a linguistic framework for examining the Attitude present in Malay language newspaper discourse. Attitude consists of types such as Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation. The concept of Evaluative Language in Malay newspaper discourse can be explained by outlining these types of Attitude.
