Abstract

The Objective of this study entitled “An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Translating Descriptive Text (A Case Study at First Semester of Catholic University of Saint Thomas Medan)” was to identify, classify and describe the student’s difficulties in translating descriptive text. The subject of this study was twenty two students at the first semester of Catholic University of Saint Thomas Medan. The writer used the test as an instrument. In collecting the data the students translated the descriptive text. The result of this study showed that the students found the difficulties in syntactic ambiguity in sentence and sequence of word meaning 51% in the form of adjective (95%), Noun Phrase (86%).Keywords: Difficulties, Syntactic Ambiguity, Translation.

Abstract

This study is aimed to improve the students’ vocabulary acquisition through derivational suffixes strategy. The subject of this study is the students of Class IX-1 of SMP Santo Petrus Medan in the academic year of 2017/2018. This study is conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (CAR), which have been conducted in two cycles (cycle 1 and cycle 2) and each cycle consisted of four meetings. The results of vocabulary test shows that the progressing mean score of the pretest is 34.66, post test in cycle 1 is 93.46, and post test in cycle 2 is 97.33. In cycle 1, the comparison percentage of nominal is 88.83%, verbal is 77.46%, adjectival is 40.74%, and adverbial is 84.14%. In cycle 2, the comparison percentage of nominal is 100%, verbal is 95.45%, adjectival is 65.84%, and adverbial is 94.91%. The percentage of the students who pass Minimal Criterion Mastery in each cycle is 100%, with the improvement 169.64% in cycle 1 to 180.81% in cycle 2. These indicate that there is a significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery through affixation strategy of Class IX-1 of SMP Santo Petrus Medan in the academic year of 2017/2018.

Abstract

This article aims at proposing a way to identify polysemy ‘anding-andingen’ or proverb in bahasa karo. The writer has an interest to use proverb or anding-aningen in this study because in proverb contains a lot of semantic meaning. This study was conducted using the descriptive qualitative approach in nature; therefore it only describes the semantic knowledge theory. The results of this study indicate that the element DO may occur either with a subject (Actor) alone with a second (Patient) argument as well (in English, as DO TO). It opened the way for a new semantically-inspired approach to grammar constructions. An analysis of ‘X does this’ as ‘X can say this’ and of ‘A because B’ as if not B, the not A’, the writers admitted that both DO and BECAUSE into the stable of semantic primitives. A similar entailment-like relationship obtains between PEOPLE and SOMEONE, but there is at least one significant syntactic difference, namely, that PEOPLE cannot occur with quantifier ONE.

Abstract

The most difficult part of writing is students could not organize the development of their ideas and the purpose of the text.Digital storytelling is one of the multimedia to improve students' writing competency. The main objective of this research is to prove whether the digital storytelling enhances and improve students writing competency. The study uses classroom action research (CAR). The data in this study are quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data will be collected by using the essay test. The qualitative data will be collected by using observation, field notes, and questionnaire.The results of the use of digital storytelling in writing text significantly increased by using digital storytelling. The score of students’ writing descriptive text kept increasing from pre-test until post-test. It was proved by the data which showed that the mean of the students’ score in post-test II (86.4) was higher than the post-test I (72.2), and also higher than the pre-test (54.8). in addition, the response of student in using digital storytelling in the agree category, it can be seen from the frequencies of item 110 (52.88%).Therefore, Digital Storytelling significantly improves students’ score in writing Descriptive Text. Furthermore, it can be concluded that Digital Storytelling is effective to be used in teaching writing skill, especially in Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Bahasa mewakili ideologi, pengetahuan, dan nilai-nilai budaya bagi kebiasaan sosial dan individual. Ideologi semiotik mengacu pada asumsi yang mendasari tentang hubungan interpretasi antar simbol, fungsi simbol, dan pesan symbol yang terkandung dalam suatu budaya sebagai refleksi dari bagian pendidikan manusia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji orientasi ideologi semiotik terjemahan yang mempengaruhi keakuratan teks terjemahan budaya. Data dianalisis berdasarkan metode terjemahan dan analisis semiotik (empiris, sintaksis, semantik, pragmatis) dalam teks terjemahan. Data diambil dari 30 mahasiswa Universitas Katolik Santo Thomas Sumatera Utara. Metode penelitian adalah teks deskriptif kualitatif dan merupakan bagian dari studi kasus. Analisis data mengungkapkan 16 data ideologi semiotik dalam terjemahan Tunggal Panaluan, yaitu datu, tunggal panaluan, the underworld dragon naga padoha, a scaled snake, bonang manalu, pre–Christian ideas, serpentine riding mounts, the incest between a pair of twins, exogamy, magical ingredients, animated, dogs- pigs- or water buffalo, sacrificial offerings, a brilliant reddish gleam, the autochthonous underworld dragon and the snake goddess (naga), a mythical creature called a singa, none of these datu were strong enough. Temuan ini memperkuat proses terjemahan bukanlah sekedar pengalihan pesan dari teks sumber ke teks sasaran, tetapi lebih merupakan proses pengalihan ideologi antarbudaya.

Abstract

This study proved the interrelated concepts of Minyak Karo based on biological, ideological, and sociological dimensions in Padang Bulan and Pancur Batu regency, North Sumatra. This study was in the form of descriptive qualitative study. The results proved that the ingredients to make Minyak Karo were cooking oil, green coconut oil, hundred spices, kaffir lime/kaffir lime leaves, panglai, kencur, shallots, garlic, pepper, nutmeg, nest wallet, ship leaves, jambar api, tawan gegeh, fresh ipuh, bulung patchouli , gagaten tiger, root areca nut, root riman, root bamboo, reeds, root pengkih, root palm, basil, tawan gegeh, turmeric and areca nut. The plant parts used in traditional medicine of Minyak Karo were leaf, root, rhizome, flower, stem, fruit, bark, seed, tuber, and latex in biological dimension. In ideological dimensions, Minyak Karo had the content of chant to invite the spirits of the ancestors. Based on sociological dimension, the purpose of the ritual of making Minyak Karo was to cure diseases that were believed to come from supernatural spirits or diseases sent by people through supernatural means and asked for protection from the spirits of the ancestors.

Abstract

English teachers’ beliefs had an important role in their decision-making about how grammar should be taught. Approaches to foreign grammar pedagogy were informed not only by the point of view of grammar, but also by beliefs about the importance of grammar, how it could be learned, and how it could be taught. The aims of teaching English grammar in this research were to know the factors that could influence English foreign language teachers’ beliefs in English grammar teaching and their roles in the practice of teaching English grammar. A mixed-method that involved qualitative and quantitative methods in this research was used to describe any insight of English teachers in teaching English grammar. The data were collected based on a close-ended interview and a questionnaire administered to 27 English teachers in 3 junior high schools and 3 senior high schools in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The results showed that: (1) the reasons for the importance of grammar teaching in speaking skills, (2) the way how grammar should be taught in speaking skills, (3) the techniques to teach English grammar, (4) the challenges of teaching grammar in speaking skills, and (5) the procedures to teach English grammar. This research recommended English teachers reflect on the professional and pedagogical contexts of English grammar teaching to improve the quality of English teachers’ teaching behaviors.

Abstract

The critical ability of English lecturers to education technology 4.0 could change the role of the traditional English lecturer because there needed to be a balance between soft skills and technological competencies. The value of digital transformation had shown that pedagogical interventions with student-centered pedagogy could design learning support goals and strategies and critically evaluate English lecturers’ self-management as professional trainers. The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) the role and innovation of English lecturers in the face of the paradigm shift in online learning, and (2) the conditions of digital learning related to lecturers` competencies. Focusing on qualitative data collected from 23 English lecturers at some higher education institutions in Indonesia, the results of English lecturer responses showed that the lecturers’ digital skills enhanced the following factors, such as knowledge, the students’ responsiveness to tasks, contextualized teaching and learning, and the stimulating of ideas as feedback thereby assisting the universities in recognizing the value of technology as their teaching needs. The data responses could reflect how the lecturers transformed learning through innovative pedagogical concepts and the use of digital in the classroom. Future research could strengthen the pedagogical profile for education 4.0 to master technology with a global view of world culture.

Abstract

English learning activities for school-age children could not be separated by game methods that made a child learned to explore, discovered, expressed feelings, be creative, increased the activity of new thinking patterns, and provided opportunities to socialize with their environment. One example of a game that was starting to develop and be used in all areas of English language skills was bingo. The purpose of this community service was to describe the ability to improve the English language of special school students at the Markus Foundation through bingo games and as a guide for the implementation of English learning. The method used was the training in the use of vocabulary and speaking English through cards and powerpoint. The result of this community service activity was that the students were able to increase their English vocabulary through the bingo game because the researcher provided pictures and asked them to talk about the activities in the pictures. Bingo card pictures were able to provide clues to introduce the use of words and students practice a lot of pronunciation techniques with other students which made learning activities more challenging, motivated, and increased self-confidence. The existence of this training activity was expected to be able to develop the use of English as a foreign language in the context of the learning model of children with special needs in the form of interesting games and it required the responses of other students as a stimulation of the development of affective, cognitive, and psychomotor intelligence

Abstract

This study about the language attitude of Students University Catholic of Saint Thomas Medan North Sumatera towards English. This research applied descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this study was students at Unika Santo Thomas Medan about 100 students from four tribes (Karonese, Simalungun, Nias and Tobanese) in North Sumatera and 25 students taken from each tribe as sample. The purpose of this study was to find out the language attitude of Students University Catholic of Saint Thomas towards English. The results showed that there were 19 (76%) students of Karonese found English was interesting, 25 (100%) students of Nias, (94%) students of Simalungun, and 19 (76%) students of Tobanese found English was interesting.
