Abstract

Given that English is currently the most extensively utilized language globally, its importance cannot be dismissed or underestimated. This is because English is the most prevalent language spoken everywhere. Both consistent practice and patience are required in order to learn English. To advance in one's life, it is essential to have a working knowledge of the English language. It is the most important viewpoint of the contemporary world. Due to the prevalence of English as the primary language for communication worldwide, particularly among youth, this study focused on the impact that English has as a global language. The focus of this study was to explore what factors are contributing to why teenagers should learn English and the reasons why they had been learning English since earlier age. Teenagers were under the impression that all languages would eventually compete with English for the position of world language. It is anticipated that the future of English will provide us with a path to follow in how we conduct our operations in connection to the potential future of English. For millions of people all around the world, English is rapidly becoming an essential fundamental skill.

Abstract

Da’wah, derived from Arabic, refers to the act of extending an invitation. Consequently, it encompasses the notion of persuading individuals to embrace the Islamic faith. Da’wah also seeks to encourage Muslims to adhere steadfastly to religious tenets. This invitation can be conducted using a multitude of methods. In this essay, the researchers contend that novels can serve as a potent means of da’wah. As an example, the works of Indonesian author Hamka were examined. The study of Hamka’s writings in relation to da’wah was conducted through the application of a structuralist and semiotic approach. We have found that these novels have a substantial readership and that they aim to conceptualise the world’s sufferings by creating binary pairs of oppositions. Within numerous narratives, the juxtaposition of opposing elements often reaches its climax in the concept of mortality, thus accentuating the true significance of existence. The readers will comprehend that their earthly existence is nearing its conclusion. Additionally, it was found that Hamka utilised a nuanced approach to imparting Islamic ideas: The primary figures in his literary works often provide guidance or communicate religious knowledge.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Critical Discourse Analysis to Narendra Modi's speech Maan Ki Baat. In this research, the focus is on the text structure and the ideology represented in the speech. The theory used is Van Dijk’s text structure model which concentrates on the three elements of text structures; macrostructures, superstructures, and microstructures. The research adopts qualitative research using critical discourse analysis to analyze the data. The data were analyzed through Van Dijk’s text structure model. The data collected from https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=oEB5RnaDZmE. This study has revealed that first the macrostructure of three speeches is about Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked Indians to stay more vigilant than ever against the threat of COVID-19. Second, the superstructure of the three speeches gives information about the condition of Indians and poor people against the effect of covid-19 and his recommendation to people in following the protocol during the pandemic period. Third, the microstructure of the three speeches depicts that Modi intended to provide a positive image in his speech therefore, the positive word is used in the speech. Thus, the ideology represented in the text is socialism.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the types of Attitude and the realizations. It applied the Appraisal theory initiated by Martin and White (2005) regarding the types of Attitude contained in the text, the strength of the feelings involved, and ways of assessing that are sourced and aligned with the reader. It was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method and the data are the words, phrases, and clauses of the novel showing Appraisal Attitudes. The results showed that from 419 Sentences and 329 appraising items, dominantly there are 101 Attitudes of Positive Affect and 46 Attitudes of Negative Affect. Then, it is followed by 75 Attitudes of Positive Judgment and 41 Attitudes of Negative Judgment. Lastly, there are 50 Attitudes of Positive Appreciation and 16 Attitudes of Negative Appreciation. Also, it can be concluded that the realizations of Attitude can be shown by the emotions and feelings conveyed by each character in the novel to invite readers to understand the contents of the novel.

Abstract

This research delves into the realm of forensic stylistic analysis by examining a poignant suicide note penned by a family of elementary school teachers in Malang. Through a meticulous exploration of the emotional intricacies and linguistic characteristics of the note, the study seeks to unravel the underlying motives and sentiments of the authors. Employing techniques such as semantic and sentiment analysis, the research aims to uncover the deeper meanings and emotional nuances embedded within the message. The study sheds light on the enduring presence of love and familial bonds even amidst challenging circumstances, showcasing expressions of care and emotional connections within the notes. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing signs of emotional distress and providing appropriate support for individuals in need. This research contributes to a better understanding of suicide notes within the realm of forensic stylistics and emphasizes the significance of empathy and intervention in times of emotional crisis.

Abstract

This research examines the use of interactive metadiscourse markers in three presidential speeches delivered by President Joe Biden, with a focus on transition markers, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidence, and code glosses. It used descriptive qualitative method. The analysis is based on the metadiscourse model by Hyland (2005). Findings showed that transition markers, especially those indicating addition, were the most frequently used, followed by frame markers, endophoric markers, code glosses, and proofs. This study shows how these markers contribute to the coherence and persuasiveness of speech by guiding audience interpretation, organizing discourse, and clarifying intended meaning. In particular, the study identified examples where one marker, for example, had multiple functions across different categories. This study contributes to the understanding of metadiscourse in political speech and highlights the role of such markers in enhancing the effectiveness of presidential communications.

Abstract

This study is aims to identified, analyze, and figure out the meaning of each figurative language used in song lyrics of “The Tortured Poets Department” album by Taylor Swift. The data include the lyrics of 16 songs in Taylor Swift’s album “The Tortured Poets Department”. This study employed content analysis method where the data is gathered by gathering all the lyrics of Taylor swift's songs in “The Tortured Poets Department” album. The findings was revealed that eleven from thirteen figurative language from Perrine’s theory was used in this album: simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbole, irony, and allusion. Simile had 14%, metaphor had 4,3%, personification had 4,3%, synecdoche had 3,2%, metonymy had 20,4%, symbol had 11,8%, allegory had 1,0%, paradox had 2,1%, hyperbole had 15,0%, irony had 18,0%, and allusion had 5,3%. Metonymy is a figurative language that most used in the “The Tortured Poets Department” song lyrics.

Abstract

This article delves into the exploration of Evaluative Language Theory within the discourse of Malay newspapers. The study draws upon two primary news sources: "Berita Harian/Minggu Singapura" (BH S'pura) and "Berita Harian/Ahad Malaysia" (BH M'sia). Specifically, the analysis focuses on comment articles related to the tragic events of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York. By selecting articles with similar thematic contexts, the analysis aims to unveil the strategies employed by these news sources through the commentators' voices aimed at influencing their readership. The study employs Systemic Functional Linguistics to scrutinize Evaluative Language, encompassing Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation, within the Malay newspaper discourse. Attitude types such as effect, judgment, and appreciation, engagement modes including monogloss and heterogloss, and graduation aspects like force and focus are crucial elements examined in this research. Through this lens, the article aims to elucidate the nuances of Evaluative Language Concepts in Malay newspaper discourse, offering insights into how these linguistic elements shape reader perception and understanding.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the skills in writing lecture texts by utilizing audio-visual media through the CapCut application for class The research sample consisted of students from class XI IPA 1 as an experimental group with a total of 30 students and class XI IPA 2 as a control group with a total of 35 students. The instrument used for data collection was a test instrument in the form of essay questions. The results of this research, in the experimental class the average value obtained was 87.53 and the average value in the control class was 77.37. Meanwhile, the results of hypothesis testing with the t-test obtained a tcount value of 6.23 with a df of 63 in ttable, so a ttable value was obtained of 1.66, thus it can be seen that tcount > ttable (6.23 > 1.66). From the results of these calculations, it can be interpreted that Ha in this study was accepted and HO was rejected, which means that there is an influence of the use of audio-visual media through the CapCut application on the lecture text writing skills of class.

Abstract

This research investigates the pervasive phenomenon of online hate speech targeting transgender celebrities across Indonesian and International social media platforms. Focusing on experiences of Lucinta Luna and Caitlyn Jenner, the study aims to bridge a critical gap in understanding how cultural contexts shape the prevalence and nature of online harassment directed at transgender public figures. Through a comparative analysis, this research employs a mixed-theory approach that integrates Mondal's (2017) categorization of hate speech types and Kreidler's (2002) framework of hate speech intentions. The findings reveal that both Luna and Jenner share common experiences of online hate speech, with significant occurrences related to their behaviour, physical appearance, and gender identity. Notably, there was an absence of hate speech targeting disability, ethnicity, or race. Furthermore, the study uncovers that the major intentions behind the hate speech took the form of insulting and insinuating rhetoric. By exploring the unique challenges faced by Lucinta Luna and Caitlyn Jenner in navigating online spaces and addressing instances of hate speech, this research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding transgender celebrityhood and online harassment
