Abstract

This article examines the Islamization of the Suku Anak Dalam and the social transformations that accompanied this process. The study employs a qualitative approach using the historical method to reconstruct past events experienced by the Suku Anak Dalam and to analyze the socio-cultural changes that followed. Data were collected through oral history, including testimonies from customary leaders (Tumenggung) and community members who directly experienced the process of Islamization, as well as relevant contemporary documents available in the field. The research provides an analysis of the condition of the Suku Anak Dalam before and after the establishment of Taman Nasional Bukit Dua Belas (TNBD). Prior to the creation of TNBD, the Suku Anak Dalam had inhabited the forest for generations, relying on it as their primary source of livelihood. However, after the establishment of the national park and subsequent land-use changes, forest resources declined significantly. As a result, the community could no longer sustain their traditional way of life. Several factors contributed to religious conversion, including intermarriage with Muslim communities, the requirement to convert prior to marriage, and economic pressures linked to diminishing forest resources. Following conversion, significant social changes occurred, including the adoption of settled living patterns and the abandonment of certain traditional cultural and religious practices.

Abstract

This study explores the configuration of cultural identity among professors of Islamic studies at state Islamic higher education institutions (PTKI) in the Mataraman region of East Java, Indonesia. Drawing on Clifford Geertz’s santri–priyayi–abangan framework, the research examines how professors negotiate their self-identities within Javanese socio-religious structures. Employing an interpretive ethnographic approach, this study is based on in-depth interviews with professors of Islamic studies from three PTKI—IAIN Kediri, UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung, and IAIN Ponorogo—complemented by participatory observation of academic rituals, religious gatherings, and institutional practices, as well as analysis of relevant institutional documents. The findings reveal a dynamic interplay between academic professionalism and pesantren-based cultural heritage. While most informants identify primarily as professional Islamic intellectuals rather than traditional kyai or priyayi, many embody hybrid cultural affiliations. Their achieved status as state-recognized professors often contrasts with community perceptions rooted in religious authority and pesantren lineage. This identity configuration points to the emergence of a new social formation—the elite santri—characterized by academically sanctioned authority that remains culturally resonant. The study contributes to a nuanced understanding of contemporary Islamic academia and shifting patterns of religious authority in Javanese Muslim society.

Abstract

This study analyzes the management of funeral equipment and corpse preparation in Pakem Village as a transformation of religious obligation into a community-based micro social security system. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, the research explores how fardhu kifayah is institutionalized as a structure of social solidarity beyond its normative-ritual dimension. The findings show that funeral management is understood not merely as a family responsibility but as a collective duty organized through shared equipment inventories, communal contributions, local traditions such as klitikan, and active youth involvement. This practice reflects Émile Durkheim’s concept of mechanical solidarity, where shared religious values foster collective consciousness and social integration, while also illustrating Max Weber’s value-oriented action (wertrational) in the community’s voluntary participation beyond minimal obligations. Functionally, the system operates as a micro social security mechanism by facilitating risk sharing, redistributing resources, and reducing the financial burden on grieving families. Rather than diminishing traditional solidarity, village administrative modernization has encouraged adaptive cross-generational collaboration and strengthened the integration of religious values with local norms. The sustainability of this system depends on public trust, youth engagement, and the internalization of religious values as a source of collective moral legitimacy, confirming that death practices serve as an adaptive informal social welfare infrastructure in contemporary rural contexts.

Abstract

This study analyzes the construction of consumption behavior among dormitory students amid the expansion of digital advertising, the rise of consumer culture, and the role of religion and educational institutions as normative mechanisms. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical design, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with boarding house students who actively use social media and online shopping platforms. The analysis combines Jean Baudrillard’s perspective on consumer society, Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, and Max Weber’s theory of rational action to examine consumption dynamics at micro, meso, and macro levels. The findings reveal that digital advertising not only delivers product information but also produces meanings that shape students’ preferences, lifestyles, and social identities. Intensive exposure to advertising, combined with technological adaptability and a phase of self-discovery, shifts consumption orientation from utility value to symbolic value. Consumption becomes a strategy for gaining social recognition and constructing self-image. However, students are not merely passive consumers; they evaluate ratings and reviews, consider financial limitations, and even transform into digital economic actors such as resellers. At the same time, tensions emerge between value-oriented rationality derived from religion and education and the instrumental rationality promoted by the digital market system, which may lead to impulsive buying, wastefulness, and financial strain. This study contributes by positioning boarding house students as active agents negotiating within digital capitalism and recommends strengthening financial and media literacy alongside the internalization of religious consumption ethics.

The results of the analysis using the N-Gain Score test and Independent Sample T-Test showed that the use of cyberspace had a significant positive impact on improving the understanding of religious moderation. The average N-Gain score in the experimental group was 57%, classified as "Quite Effective". The results of the T-test showed a T-count of 5.310 which was greater than the T-table of 2.023, indicating a significant difference between the two groups. This study confirms that cyberspace, through various technology platforms, can be an effective medium in supporting the educational process, especially in strengthening religious moderation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Generation Z’s perspective in interpreting reciprocity within the Kuningan kondangan tradition in the digital era. This phenomenon is significant to examine following the emergence of digital invitations, which have transformed conventional patterns within the Kuningan kondangan tradition. These changes have created new dynamics in the way Generation Z maintains reciprocal relationships. The theoretical framework used to analyze the findings is the theory of the gift proposed by Marcel Mauss. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Informants were selected using the snowball sampling method, beginning with one member of Generation Z involved in reciprocal practices within the kondangan tradition, with the criterion of having experienced both giving and receiving in the tradition. The initial informant then recommended other participants, gradually forming a network of respondents. Data analysis was conducted using the analytical framework of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings indicate that digital invitations have become increasingly widespread, particularly among Generation Z. The emergence of digital invitations has transformed patterns of reciprocity in the Kuningan kondangan tradition, making them more investment-oriented and transactional in nature.
