Abstract

Conflicts between groups in Indonesia continue to occur, and diverse studies have attempted to find solutions. As one of the efforts to find these solutions, this research focuses on national identity development as a long-term effort to establish an inclusive national identity to reduce conflict between groups. This study aimed to provide an overview of the national identity development process implemented in public and private elementary schools. The data collection methods employed were observation, interviews, and document analysis. Coding analysis is applied to sort the data and generate themes for the findings. The empirical findings and discussion generate the following conclusions: First, efforts to develop a national identity in public and private elementary schools run comprehensively through cognitive aspects (thoughts, understanding, and principles), affective aspects (attitudes and appreciation), and behavioral aspects (actions and habits). These three aspects are well implemented in the school’s vision, curriculum, subject matter, learning process, non-academic activities, and social life. Second, there are kinds of national identities such as national symbols, religious identity, ethnic identity, and environmental identity. However, national identity and religious identity are boldly emphasized. This is to anticipate the tension between national identity and religious identity, which might stimulate conflict between identities. Therefore, national and religious identities are socialized as two unified identities. Finally, the success rate of the development of national identity in schools varies due to various factors. However, this is a prospect for further research, especially in schools, families, and society.

Abstract

Islam Kalang is Muslim community that still preserves indigenous traditional Javanese values. This study aimed at figuring out adaptive strategies of the community in social changes. It used a qualitative method and employed observation, in-depth interview, and documentation as techniques for data collection.The findings were that Islam Kalang has something in common Javanese society in a way that they are inclusive and open towards their surroundings. This community can be grouped into two types; the active group represented by santri, and the other one is not active as performed by abangan. The two groups perform Kalang traditions, though they are active in doing religious prescriptions, five-time prayers, alms, fast, and pilgrimage. It is due to the fact that they have strong beliefs in doing their traditional rituals. For the community, their primary duty is to do rites inherited by their predecessors, i.e., when they perform obong mitungdino, and obong sependhak. They have undergone changes and shifts because of da’wah Islamiyah and marriage with other groups. It means, therefore, the community has adaptive strategies in order to survive in the midst of society. The strategies include strong trust, endogamic marriage, and accommodating attitude.By these strategies, the community can embed and practice Kalang traditional values.

Abstract

This article concerns on the notion of responsibility to protect (R2P) in Syrian war and what can be expected from the Muslim community. This theme is important to be discussed for the reasons that crisis in Syria has been occurred for almost nine years since it began in March 2011 and it has no end sign in the immediate time. In addition, it caused hundred thousand civilians dead, million people become displaced persons. In addition, the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian war was against the international laws. This paper was written based on the data that was collected using documentary study. Findings of this research reveals that the Syrian civil war had involved various parties including the government, insurgent groups, international fighters, and several countries like the US, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia, some European countries, and other states. This made the situation very complex. The Muslim communities through international organization such as Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) should actively participate in implementing the R2P which include protecting people, promoting human rights issues, and preventing further mass killing as well as military protection.

Abstract

Kuttab is a new phenomenon in the Indonesian education system. Apart from pesantren, madrasa, and Islamic schools which are publicly familiar and formally recognized by the Indonesian government, kuttab new actor and joins the Islamic education arena with the specific offer on Quranic and Islamic belief learning. This study aims at revealing ideological roots of Kuttab Al-Fatih (KAF) and analyzing its educational concept. Kuttab Al-Fatih is selected because of its rapid spread and success to establish 34 branches throughout Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach to study KAFs in Purwokerto, the study shows that KAF embraces conservative and fundamentalistic thought in Islam. The educational concept of kuttab is idealizing past glorious Islamic institutions and civilization. Therefore, the spirit of KAF is to restore ideal Islamic education of the past.

Abstract

This study is entitled “The Uses of Religious Simbols to Represent Islam (A Study on Religious Soap Opera ‘Bukan Islam KTP’)”. The background of the research is based on the facts of the arbitrary use of symbols in representing Islam which are shown on Indonesian televisions. The pattern of the use of religious symbols, either verbal or non-verbal, symbols are generally explicit, but when they are examined using appropriate methods, they actually contains some implicit meanings. The purpose of this study was to discover how Islam is represented on television religious soap pera using religious symbols and to fid out the dominant ideology behind the representation techniques. To analyze the soap operas which consisted of twenty episodes, the researcher used a semiotic approach of John Fiske on television codes. The results of this study are: (1) the use of verbal symbols to represent Islam potentially creates multiple interpretations when they are spoken by different characters, (2) some religious terminologies are often used by antagonist players to express anger and disappointment, (3) the soap opera is dominated by verbal violence used by both protagonist and antagonist players, while antagonist player use violence both in verbal and non-verbal forms. The fidings about ideology embedded in the soap opera are: (1) capitalist-materialistic ideology, (2) ideology of patriarchy, and (3) violence domination.

Abstract

Understanding existed various religious receptions in culture provides a great opportunity for building and nurturing the harmony among religious followers and for enhancing solidarity within the society. This article uncovers receptions of religious aspects (ultimate truth/God, cosmological and religious ritual aspects) in the cultural products of Radin Jambat, a folktale from Lampung, Indonesia. This paper is based on the analysis of Radin Jambat folktale text, interviews, as well as additional library research of the Lampung cultural literary sources. Religious receptions as shown in Radin Jambat folktale indicate the preservation of past beliefs, coupled with the gentle addition and inclusion of Islamic teachings, to create harmony between religion and tradition through folktale. This study is evidence that Islam has been accepted by the societies of Lampung through gradual processes and varied receptions in terms of cultural values. This article shows that the important meaning of Radin Jambat folktale is a solid documentation to related sources about the concepts and practices of harmony among religious followers in Indonesia in the local tradition of Lampung with regards to cultural reception.

Abstract

The marriage of the Samin people in Lampung Province is conducted in a customary manner. The Samin people experience many obstacles in the process of registering their marriage officially through state institutions. The purpose of this article is to describe the Samin traditional marriage and then analyze the reasons why the Samin community conducts traditional marriages. This article uses a qualitative method, the object of research was conducted on the Samin community in Tulang Bawang Regency Lampung. Primary data sources were obtained directly from Samin traditional leaders and the community who performed traditional marriages. Secondary data sources were obtained through Samin guidebooks and journals related to Samin studies. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews and documentation. The results showed that the marriage process of the Samin community in Tulang Bawang Regency was carried out through several stages including: (1) nyumuk, (2) ngendek, (3) nyuwito, (4) paseksen, (tingkep). Samin traditional marriage does not yet have authentic legality. The legal status of the marriage is only valid in the eyes of the customary law of the adherents but not in the eyes of Indonesian marriage law. The reasons why Samin people do not officially register their marriages are 1). The Samin organization has not been registered with the Directorate of Trust of the Ministry of Culture as a marriage registration officer 2). Samin leaders have not been registered with the Ministry because they do not have a Registered Certificate (SKT). 3) Their ancestors did not teach that marriage should be registered.

Abstract

Many countries strongly rely on deradicalization path to solve terrorism catastrophe. However, they mostly still focus on the terrorists themselves and lack of attention to the people around them particularly their children. While in some local to the international cases of terrorism, children have involved actively in those acts. This article delivers a significant instance on how to avert the new generation of terrorism particularly from the kinship path. This article focuses on an Islamic boarding school or pesantren (Al-Hidayah) run by a former terrorist (Al-Ghazali) with the main purpose is deradicalization program towards the terrorists’ children. This article is based on the field research, the collecting of the data using depth interview as the primer data and exposure some references as the secondary data. This article found that deradicalization towards terrorist’s children is better under the education platform or pesantren, because it provides two things; firstly, children can gain their right to reach the education after they were marginalized even excluded from their former school. Secondly, it becomes a new home for the children where support the way to apply deradicalization program through the formal model (within the class) and informal model (out the class). There are four significant prograsm that Al-Hidayah pesantren applied namely a green school, life skill, tahfiz class, and trauma healing. Generally, it is success as a curative and preventive action. Although the pesantren receives some financial supports from the government and some other parties, it still struggles to raise more funds to provide free education for its student.

Abstract

This article discusses Sappho’s “Ode to Anaktoria” (fragment 16) poem as a ‘marginal’ product of an aristocratic intellectual in the transitional society of Mytilene at the end of the Archaic Period (8th-5th century B.C.). The research method is a kind of media analysis. The mean of “media” in this paper related to “A means by which something is communicated or expressed” It is laso relate to the intervening substance through which sensory impressions are conveyed or physical forces are transmitted. Media also means as a substance in which an organism lives or is cultured. On the other hand, media is a material or form used by an artist, composer, or writer; We interpreted Ode to Anaktoria  in the means as the terms of media above. Sappho (born 610, died 570 B.C.) is a renowned Greek lyric poetess and musician and is greatly admired in all ages for the beauty of her writing style. Plato’s 16th epigram dedicated to her reads “Some say there are nine Muses; but they should stop to think. Look at Sappho of Lesbos; she makes a tenth”. Sappho is additionally ranked among the Nine Lyric Poets esteemed by the scholars of Hellenistic Alexandria as worthy of critical study. “Ode to Anaktoria” is read through the historic-political concept of hegemony as suggested by Gramsci. In this view, the moment of “hegemony” or of cultural leadership is systematically upgraded precisely in opposition to the mechanistic and fatalistic concepts of economism. Sappho’s fragment 16 does not only indicate defiance to androcentric (epic) categories; she suggests nonnormative, thus new, ways of contemplating life (lyric).

Abstract

The Poken Bante is a Mandailing community tradition in welcoming Eid al-Fitr. This tradition is carried out on the last day of Ramadan. This study aims to examine the activities of Mandailing people in the Poken Bante tradition, to understand the relevance of the Poken Bante tradition and Islamic teachings, and to analyze the meaning and value of the Poken Bante tradition in welcoming Eid al-Fitr. This tradition was studied using qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. The primary data was obtained through participant observation and in-depth interviews. Ethnographic notes are essential in primary data collection. Secondary data was obtained through articles, books, and archives. Data analysis in this research is ethnographic analysis by systematically examining the data obtained, the relationship between the data, and the overall relationship of the data. This research took place for one month, starting from the middle of Ramadan to Syawal in 1444 H (April - May 2023 M), located in Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency. This research found that the Poken Bante tradition is a meat market activity that arises on the last day of Ramadan due to the high demand for meat needs from the Mandailing community. The relevance of this tradition and Islam is reflected in the integration of Mandailing culture and Islamic teachings based on the Mandailing philosophy of Hombar do Adat dohot Ibadat. The meaning and value of the Poken Bante tradition are togetherness, unity, integrity, and helping.
