Abstract

Said Nursi was a profound Muslim thinker and revivalist, whose teachings (Risale-i Nur) and ideology are still being followed today in modern Turkey. His life is full of enthusiasm and energy. During his lifetime, he encountered problems similar to those faced by other Muslim scholars and thinkers in other parts of the Islamic world in the 20th century. He lived a life of struggle and harassment but never acted aggressively and never allowed his students to respond with aggression. The strong opposition of the government to religion as opposed to Nursi’s firm stand against any irreligiousness certainly made him a symbol of religious movement in Turkey. He sacrificed his whole life for the cause of Islam and fought against the corruption of society caused by enemies like atheism, materialism, colonialism, etc. through his writings collectively known as Risale-i Nur, whose teachings form the basis of one of the largest and rather influential religious orders. This paper anticipates discussing the significance of Nursi’s thoughts, teachings and his life and also explaining the importance of Nursi in the formation of ideology that helped the society of Turkey to get rid of anti-religious systems. The aim of this research paper is to explain his literary contributions that proved to be one of the most ubiquitous read materials in Turkey. Also, the paper will describe and highlight some clarity related to the writings of Nursi i.e. who wrote actually the treatises of Nursi, its propagation and popularization, who published and translated it in later times.

Abstract

One of the issues which has been attracted by Muslim scholars is the religious moderation mainstreaming. Pesantren, as the oldest and indigenous educational institution in Indonesia, is inseparable from such issue. This study examines the development of moderation a basic idea of pesantren. This paper is divided into three parts. First is introducing the articulation of moderation in pesantren from various perspectives. Second is discussing the idea of Arkoun and al Jabiri’s ideas and its relation on moderation and pesantren. Third is elaborating the moderation of pesantren from its curriculum’s and extracurricular activities. This paper concerned on how Islamic moderation has shaped and disseminated through the learning process in pesantren?. Furthermore, this research was conducted at five pesantren in Kediri, East Java by considering their typologies and management. By using the interview method, literature study and in-depth observation, this research has produced data related to the research theme. Then, the results of research are to explore the complexity and continuity of Islamic moderation in pesantren and to prove that moderation mainstreaming in the grassroot is not static but flexible and dynamic as well as being fluid and multi-dimensional through the learning process and the extracurricular activities.

Abstract

As one of the main subjects in senior high school education, Islamic studies play an important role, even though it is not included in the final exam for third-grade students. Similar to the other teachers, the Islamic studies teacher also has challenges on implementing Islamic education based on the 2013 curriculum. Employing descriptive qualitative method, this research focused on describing what challenges that Islamic studies teachers faced during the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. Data was collected from interview and observation. Data reduction was used as data being analyzed. This research was completed in 2015 and it took place in SMAN 1 Salatiga where the 2013 curriculum has been implemented since 2013/2014 and the implementation was one of the pilot projects of the school. This research finds out that individual differences and the complexity of evaluation standard are the main challenges for the teachers. Individual differences do not only apply to students but also teachers. The complexity of evaluation standard is also significant to challenge the teachers on implementing Islamic education based on a whole 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

Religious education plays an important role in Indonesia, not only in religious schools but also in all schools and in community development. A number of studies show that Indonesian religious education currently faces challenges in managing the problem of religious radicalism, especially in the context of a conservative society. This research focuses on various religious problems in the community that teachers often encounter during their interactions in schools and communities, with specific reference to Islamic education. This research was conducted using the Focus Group Discussion method which involved 28 religious education teachers from DKI Jakarta, Banten, and West Java. This research explores recurring religious issues in Indonesian society that require further attention in developing religious education programs. Looking at it from the perspective of religious literacy, this study found that multiculturalism, tolerance, and prejudice are the most recurring problems in society. Recognizing the growing challenges to Indonesia's plural society, religious literacy can be used as an alternative destination for religious education. Religious education must be directed towards students’ correct understanding of various religious beliefs and traditions, in addition to strengthening the faith and practice of students' own religious beliefs.

Abstract

This study is stimulated by the background of the gap regarding the understanding and application between the Indonesian ideology of Pancasila and theology (religion) among both Muslims and Christians. This research aimed to study the integration between Christian theology and the Indonesian ideology of Pancasila. This research was based upon the naturalistic paradigm with a qualitative approach and integrative research method to find a model for solving religious intolerance and violence, which is often manipulated by political interests. This integrative study, especially integral dialectical synthesis, is to find a holistic knowledge of the doctrine of the principle of One Lordship, just and civilized humanity according to Christian theology and ideology of Pancasila as a model of integration. The integrative study between theology and ideology confirms that each of the five principles of Pancasila is theological, and even a mandate that believers (the Christians community) must obey. The relationship between Christian theology and the ideology of Pancasila is an integrative relationship because God and humanity are also integrative. These findings suggest that all Christians live in love and respect to their fellow humans, both Christian and non-Christian. Loving God and others means loving the Indonesian people by participating in overcoming the nation's problems and building the Indonesian nation's welfare for the welfare of the nation is our (all Indonesian citizens) wellbeing.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the history of Acehnese wars and the progress of peace in Aceh after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Aceh Freedom Movement, or Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM), and the Republic of Indonesia in Helsinki on August 15th, 2005. Prior to this, Aceh was a tense region and home to the longest armed conflict in Southeast Asia – underway since 1982. The people of Aceh were fighting to realize the concept of self-independence. However, the movement came to a stop when the devastating tsunami hit Aceh on December 26th, 2004. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the root of Acehnese wars. The paper will provide the current political, social, economic and cultural achievements since Aceh entered into a new chapter of peace. Using qualitative approach, the theory of inequality and conflict and Fanon’s ideas, this paper offers a comprehensive perspective on learning from Aceh wars and conflicts. This study found that the motive of wars in Aceh can be divided from group motive, private motivation, failure of social contract and environment scarcity. Moreover, the research confirms that social and economic progress in Aceh has not been as successful as its political achievements. Furthermore, in terms of culture, progress has been ambiguous. This paper aims to provide a better understanding of how to maintain peace in Aceh by addressing social, political, economic and cultural issues with the goal of attaining prosperity and well-being for the people of Aceh.

Abstract

This article examines Imām al-Ḥaramayn al-Juwaynī’s application of jadal theory in both his legal and theological work by analyzing critically his  major writings, namely: Kitāb al-Irshād (1950), al-Kāfīya fī al-jadal (1979), al-Burhān fī uṣūl al-fiqh (1980), al-Durrah al-Muḍīyah fī mā waqaʿa fīhi al-khilāf bayn al-Shāfiʿīyah wa al-Ḥanafīyah (1986), and Tafḍīl madhhab al-Shāfiʿī ʿalā sā’ir al-madhāhib (2013). Through a hermeneutical reading of these books, I find that Imām al-Ḥaramayn’s application of jadal renders the integration of kalām and fiqh. At first, Imām al-Ḥaramayn aims to obtain knowledge with a certain level of certainty (in the forms of ʿilm or ghalabat al-ẓann) in law and theology by applying jadal in both disciplines. Then, this scholarly attempt of obtaining certainty interestingly provides an epistemological ground for the integration of kalām and fiqh. He inserts theological elements in his legal scholarship and incorporates a juridical perspective in his theological work. As a result, he “rationalizes” Shāfiʿī legal doctrines on the one hand and “traditionalizes” rational theology on the other. This epistemological foundation for the integration of kalām and fiqh is important not only because it provides a different description of Islamic intellectual history, but also redefines the concept of Sunnī in the eleventh century.

Abstract

The Productivity of Indonesian researchers is still considered low at the international level. The researcher productivity is measured through the amount of scientific papers published. This study aimed to prove some factors affecting the research productivity. Specifically, this study aimed to empirically examine the effect of researcher characteristics, subjective well-being, knowledge sharing, and research competence on research productivity.With stratified proportional random sampling technique we obtained a sample of 100 researchers in Office of Research and Development and Training scattered in central and local units. Data were collected using questionnaires to measure research productivity, subjective well-being, knowledge sharing, and research competence. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentiallly. We used analysis of variance (ANOVA) and path analysis which were processed with SPSS 16 and LISREL 8.80 (Student) for the inferential analysis. The results of ANOVA concluded that the productivity did not differ significantly by gender. However there were significant differences in the research productivity based on the academic qualification and the functional job of researchers. The results of path analysis concluded that subjective well-being and research competence had direct positive effect on the research productivity, knowledge sharing had direct negative impact on the research productivity but knowledge sharing had indirect positive effect through the research competence on the research productivity. Research compentence contributes the highest effect on the research productivity. From this study we recommend that the institution need to improve the research competence on quantitative research method with regard to statistical tools to collect, process, and analyze the research data.

Abstract

A text within literary works does not emerge from cultural and traditional voids. Islamic literary works such as hikayat play a role in conveying spiritual, moral, and religious values to the Malay-Archipelago community of that era. The objective of this research is to elucidate the Islamic values and moralities within the ancient manuscript of Hikayat Nabi Isa that remains relevant within the context of religious life in contemporary Indonesia. Hikayat Nabi Isa holds significant value and strength in introducing, teaching, and deepening the understanding of Islamic teachings to the community, hence it is crucial to explore it. This research employs a descriptive-qualitative method. The primary data source is the manuscript of Hikayat Nabi Isa from the collection of the National Library of France with the code Malayo-Polynesien 68. The manuscript is transliterated and then utilized as the research object. A textual approach is employed in this research. Data are gathered through literature review techniques. Data processing involves stages of description, analysis, and evaluation. The findings of Islamic values and moralities within the text of Hikayat Nabi Isa encompass three aspects. Firstly, the connection between humans and Allah. Secondly, ethics and morality in society. Thirdly, the wisdom of human life's sagacity.

Abstract

Pakistan, the second most populous Muslim country after Indonesia, came into existence on 14th August, 1947, after the division of ‘British ruled’ India (into India and Pakistan). From its inception to present, Pakistan covers a tumultuous history of over seven decades (1947-2019). Among the South Asian countries, no quantum of scholarship has been produced on any country—its history, religion (and religious ideology), politics, society, economy, and other inter-related issue—than Pakistan. This has continued in the last as well as present century. From 2010 onwards, numerous works have been published on religion, politics, military, and other aspects of Pakistan. This review essay, in this framework, presents an assessment of three (3) important works, published in between 2012 and 2014, so that to get clues of the various aspects of Pakistan. Following a descriptive-cum-comparative methodological approach, the books assessed and examined are: Ian Talbot, Pakistan: A New History (2012); Faisal Devji, Muslim Zion: Pakistan as a Political Idea (2013); and Aqil Shah, The Army and Democracy: Military Politics in Pakistan (2014). This assessment helps us in understanding the diverse scholarly approaches adopted (by different scholars) in studying Pakistan. The major argument put forth is that such an appraisal helps us not only in understanding the history of Pakistan, but in analyzing the issues and challenges Pakistan has faced, and is facing—be they religious, political, or related to military and security, etc.
