Abstract

The editorial in this issue highlights how humanitarian aid to Palestine has become a symbol of solidarity among Indonesians. It examines two major Islamic mass organizations in Indonesia, Nahdhatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, and how they mobilize their resources and members to support Palestinian relief. The two organizations show a strong commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause before the current war on Gaza, which started in October 2023. This commitment to helping the Palestinian struggle is also in line with the position of the Indonesian government and academics.

Abstract

Currently, the most common methods for preserving supernatural beings from foreign lands involve conducting religious ceremonies and beseeching spiritual creatures in close proximity. This inquiry aims to explore the spiritual significance and function of the Yogacara Ulkā-Mukha ritual practices in the redemption of Chinese spirits that are residing abroad. The research design employed a phenomenological approach, involving nine monks in Thailand as participants. The data-gathering process involved conducting in-depth interviews and engaging in participant observations. Subsequently, the data were subjected to thematic analysis to ascertain the significance and function of the difficulties in the execution of the ritual. The study yielded three significant findings: first, the Yogacara Ulkā-mukha ritual embodies the concept of Buddhist compassion and the duty to rescue wandering souls in their quest for tranquility; second, it explores the adaptation and challenges faced in preserving tradition and cultural heritage within the modern context; and third, it examines the potency of intention and prayer in transcending the constraints of space and time. These findings are elaborated in the concluding section of this paper. Moreover, this study suggests the creation of a ritual adaptation model that considers the use of technology to enhance the participation of overseas Chinese communities in preserving spiritual customs.

Abstract

This research is an attempt to investigate Amos Yong’s Approach to Intercultural Theology as a framework for bridging Pentecostalism with the Batu Simbuang ritual in the Toraja society. The background of this research is grounded in the perception that Pentecostalism is often seen as having conservative attitudes toward culture. The research found that the roots of Pentecostal doctrine are closely linked to culture. Furthermore, the research shows the presence of shared values between Pentecostalism and the Batu Simbuang ritual, which is a part of Toraja society’s life. The contribution of this research lies in its exploration of Amos Yong's Approach to Intercultural Theology as a framework for fostering connections between Pentecostalism and the Batu Simbuang ritual in Toraja society. By challenging the perception of Pentecostalism as culturally conservative, the research reveals the intricate connection between Pentecostal doctrine and culture.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the worship model of Agama Djawa Soenda (ADS) from the perspective of Islamic education. This research focuses on how spiritual and moral values in ADS can contribute to character-building in Islamic education. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and participatory observation of ADS adherents and document studies. The data were analyzed descriptively to explore the similarities and differences between ADS worship practices and Islamic education. The results show that, substantively, ADS has many similarities with Islam, especially in the aspects of divinity, environmental preservation, respect for parents, and nationalism. However, there are differences in the technical aspects of worship, where ADS is more influenced by local Javanese culture, while Islam follows standardized worship procedures based on sharia. The study concludes that the noble values of ADS, such as nature conservation and social ethics, have the potential to be integrated into Islamic education without having to sacrifice the basic principles of Sharia. This research offers a new contribution to understanding the interaction between local religion and Islamic education, as well as the importance of an inclusive approach in education that respects religious and cultural diversity in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the extent to which a sample of parents were found to practice Islamic child-rearing methods to modify stubborn behavior in their children. In addition, it aims to demonstrate the extent to which there are statistically significant differences in the level of parents’ practice of Islamic child-rearing methods in modifying stubborn behavior in children based on the variables of social role, level of education, employment status, and the number of children. The study adopted the descriptive analytical approach using the field survey method as it was deemed well-fitted to the nature of the study and its objectives. To achieve the objectives of the study, a questionnaire was constructed to collect data from parents. The sample consisted of 317 fathers and mothers, who were selected via the convenience method during the first semester of the academic year 2021-2022. The study revealed a set of important results. Most prominently, the extent to which parents practice Islamic parenting methods in modifying stubborn behavior in children was high, with the method of encouragement being most commonly used, and the method of exclusion (isolation) being the least used. The results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences at the significance level (α = 0.05) based on the variables of social role, educational level, and employment status. There are significant differences between the arithmetic averages due to the variable of the number of children. The study recommended encouraging institutions concerned with the family in Jordanian society to focus their attention on conducting training courses for mothers and fathers, to help them learn and practice behavior modification strategies as found in Islamic teachings and to provide them with appropriate support materials for doing so.

Abstract

A hypothesis on the relationship between disaster management and religion is that the benefits of disaster recovery increase with an increase in religious diversity in disaster recovery. This article aims to examine the role of faith communities during disaster recovery with the ultimate goal of increasing religious diversity. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used to examine mass care–oriented disaster recovery and further specialized care across four stakeholders: religiously highly diverse countries, religiously moderately diverse countries, religiously least diverse countries, and international organizations. Additionally, the PRISMA 2020 checklist and flow diagram were employed as supplementary tools. A key tenet was that all four stakeholders should try to supplement mass care–oriented disaster recovery (e.g., sheltering, feeding, health services) with further specialized care while appropriately addressing religious tolerance, literacy, and competency, as well as the roles of emergency managers and sustainable education. This study provided a more comprehensive description of including faith communities in disaster recovery than was available in the existing literature.

Abstract

This research aims to explore how the belief systems of indigenous peoples influence everyday conservation practices and examine how these beliefs can be integrated into modern conservation policies. This study employed an ethnographic qualitative approach. Data collection involved participatory observation, enabling involvement in daily life to directly observe community interactions with the environment and the performance of religious rituals. In-depth interviews were administered semistructured interviews with various key informants, including traditional leaders, religious figures, community elders, and environmental practitioners. Secondary sources from academic publications, government reports, and media archives relevant to the research topic. Interpretative analysis was conducted within cultural and historical contexts to gain a deeper understanding of how religiosity shapes the environmental conservation practices of the Mentawai people. This study presents three key findings related to the environmental conservation practices of the Mentawai community. Their conservation practices are deeply rooted in a belief system. Transformative dynamic is observed, whereby the younger generation successfully combines traditional values of ancestral religion with teachings from world religions and modern perspectives. A gap is identified between the local wisdom-based conservation system and the pressures exerted by the global political economy. The study provides new insights into the crucial role of local religiosity in environmental conservation and highlights the potential for integrating traditional and modern beliefs in nature conservation efforts. The study suggests that environmental conservation strategies should integrate local communities' religious values and indigenous knowledge rather than relying solely on scientific and technological approaches.
