Abstract

This research seeks to analyze the concept of happiness through the lenses of al-Gazālī's Sufism and Viktor Frankl's logotherapy. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study employs library research to gather data from various primary and secondary sources, including al-Gazālī's Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn and Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. The analysis is conducted through a descriptive-analytical method, exploring the similarities and differences between these two frameworks in their interpretations of the search for meaning in life as a pathway to happiness. The findings demonstrate that both al-Gazālī's Sufism and Frankl's logotherapy argue that happiness is not solely reliant on material conditions; instead, it is intricately linked to the meaningfulness of life, which can be discovered through worship, personal experiences, creativity, and the attitudes we adopt when confronting challenges. Al-Gazālī asserts that true happiness can be attained through a spiritual approach that involves drawing closer to God, while Frankl posits that individuals possess the freedom to find meaning in their lives. This study proposes a holistic transformative model that bridges the spiritual and psychological aspects of the search for life's meaning by integrating these two approaches. This research makes both theoretical and practical contributions in understanding and leveraging the concept of life's meaning to attain genuine happiness.

Abstract

Education plays a vital role in shaping human character, especially in facing the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the digital era. In Islam, education is not only a means of intellectual development but also a spiritual and moral process aimed at producing insan kamil—a complete human being. One of the classical Islamic literatures that emphasizes the importance of character education is Ta’līm al-Muta’allim by Imām al-Zarnūjī. This research aims to explore the relevance of the character values contained in Ta’līm al-Muta’allim in addressing the moral challenges faced by students in modern times. Using a qualitative library research method, this study analyzes classical texts and relevant contemporary literature. The findings show that the values of sincerity, discipline, respect for teachers, time management, and humility in seeking knowledge are still highly relevant in today's educational context. These values serve as a foundation for developing strong moral character among students, which is essential in responding to the complexities of modern life and preserving ethical behavior amidst technological advancement. This study contributes to the discourse on Islamic character education and offers insights for reforming modern education by integrating classical values.

Abstract

This study discusses the transformation of Muhammadiyah's da'wah from the pre-digital era to the digital era, by highlighting the development of the Progressive-Digital Da'wah model as an innovation in the progressive Islamic movement. Using the literature study method, this study found that digitalization is not just a change in da'wah media, but rather part of Muhammadiyah's ideological and epistemological strategy in responding to global social dynamics. This study employs documentation techniques to collect data from books, journal articles, official websites, and digital media related to Muhammadiyah's da'wah. The data were then analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify patterns, themes, and meanings behind Muhammadiyah’s digital transformation strategies. The results of the study show that Muhammadiyah has succeeded in adapting da'wah through the use of digital platforms such as YouTube, podcasts, social media, and online learning systems (LMS), accompanied by an inclusive, collaborative, and participatory approach. Muhammadiyah's digital da'wah targets the millennial and Gen Z generations with popular language, attractive visuals, and tolerant and contextual narratives. In addition, a collaborative approach with NGOs, creative communities, and digital platforms strengthens the social impact of this da'wah movement. Muhammadiyah's Progressive-Digital Da'wah Model proves that progressive Islamic values can be effectively contextualized in the digital space to answer the challenges of the times and build an inclusive, civilized, and just civilization. This article contributes to the discourse on Islamic communication and da'wah by offering a model that integrates digital innovation with progressive Islamic principles in addressing contemporary societal challenges.

Abstract

The development of digital technology not only has a major effect on human life, including education, but also causes moral crises such as hoaxes, hate speech, and empathy degradation. This study aims to study Imām Al-Gazālī's perspective on spiritual education as an alternative solution to overcome the moral crisis in the modern era. In addition, this study also creates a plan to implement character education based on spirituality. This type of research is qualitative using a literature study approach. This study collects data by conducting an in-depth analysis of Al-Gazālī's writings and related literature. Such as Al-Gazālī's main works, such as Ihya 'Ulumuddin, Ayyuha al-Walad, and Mizan al-'Amal. The study shows that Al-Gazālī's educational ideas that emphasize the strengthening of morals, purification of the soul (tazkiyatun nafs), and spiritual achievement through reason, heart, soul, and spirit are very relevant to addressing the moral crisis that occurs in the modern era. Primarily, values such as honesty, trustworthiness, patience, gratitude, and self-reflection shape students' characters. Spirituality-based character education can be implemented through curriculum, daily routines, teacher examples, family involvement, and wise use of digital media. This study offers the concept of Al-Gazālī's spirituality-based character education as a solution to the moral crisis of the young generation in the digital era and provides practical guidelines for educational institutions, teachers, and families in forming intelligent, moral, and spiritual individuals.

Abstract

This study examines the moral exemplarity of Sayyidah Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ through a systematic review of classical Islamic literature and contemporary scholarship as a foundation for transforming moral education among Muslim women. In the digital era—marked by ethical crises—Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ is positioned as an ideal figure representing core Islamic values that are both contextually relevant and applicable to character formation, including ethical technology use and civil digital interaction. Adopting a normative orientation, the study applies a thematic approach in reviewing both classical Islamic texts and modern academic sources. The analysis identifies three central themes: (1) Fāṭimah’s personal and spiritual virtues, such as honesty, patience, and devotion; (2) her role in family education as a moral exemplar; and (3) the actualization of her values in digital spaces through ethical communication and moral responsibility. The study concludes that Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ’s character offers a practical and context-sensitive model for moral learning, especially within Islamic educational settings such as pesantren. These findings provide both conceptual and practical contributions to the development of value-based curricula and character education modules rooted in Islamic ethics that are responsive to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the transformation of Islamic Spiritual Activities (Rohis) in shaping religious moderation in the school environment. The approach used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR), by capturing data from various national scientific articles through databases such as Google Scholar and Garuda. Data collection was carried out using keywords related to "Rohis", "religious moderation", and "Islamic education" in the 2015–2024 period. Of the total 85 articles found, screening was carried out based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and 25 articles were obtained that were further analyzed. The data analysis technique used is thematic analysis, which groups information into large patterns and themes related to Islamic values and moderation coaching strategies. The results of the study show that Rohis' activities have changed from a symbolic-ritual approach to a more contextual and responsive coaching model to the digital era. The Islamic values developed are not only normative, but also adaptive to the social dynamics of students. This study recommends the integration of digital and thematic approaches in the development of Rohis to be more effective in instilling the value of religious moderation.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the legal position of non-Muslims ‘żimmī’ as subjects of Islamic criminal law when they voluntarily bring their cases to Islamic judicial institutions. Using a qualitative library research method, the study focuses on the analysis of Sheikh Marbawi’s views as articulated in his book Baḥru al-Mażī. The theoretical framework employed is rooted in Islamic legal theory (fiqh), especially the Shafi'i school of thought, and incorporates the theory of al-Iḥsān (legal competence based on marital status) to interpret Ḥadīṡ-based rulings concerning non-Muslim offenders. The study finds that Sheikh Marbawi considers Islamic courts obliged to adjudicate cases involving żimmī when brought before them, and that such cases must be resolved using Islamic law. This view is supported by Ḥadīṡ evidence and aligns with the classical juristic principle that recognizes the legal subjectivity of non-Muslims under certain conditions. The findings contribute to contemporary Islamic legal discourse by reaffirming the inclusiveness of Islamic criminal jurisprudence, emphasizing the importance of legal pluralism within the framework of Dar al-Islam, and highlighting the scholarly contributions of Southeast Asian ulema such as Sheikh Marbawi.

Abstract

This research explores the transformation of Islamic education in 18th-century Egypt, focusing on reform strategies, modernization aspects, key figures, and their impacts. Using a qualitative approach through documentation studies and in-depth interviews, data were collected from written sources, biographies, and intellectual works. Thematic analysis was applied to identify central ideas and their influence on educational development. Interviews with Islamic history experts, academics, or researchers who are competent in this field can provide further insights into the interpretation and a deeper understanding of the contributions of these figures to education. The findings reveal that Islamic education in Egypt experienced major reforms, especially through the integration of modern and secular sciences alongside traditional religious studies. Pioneering figures such as Muhammad Ali Pasha, Rifa’a al-Tahtawi, and Muhammad Abduh were instrumental in reshaping educational institutions, curricula, and teaching methods. These reforms laid the foundation for modern education in Egypt and influenced broader Islamic educational practices. The study recommends the continued integration of religious and secular knowledge to build a holistic and contextually relevant education system.

Abstract

This study examines the role of inclusive Islamic education in countering radicalism among university students, focusing on their understanding of the Raḥmatan lil ‘Ālamīn (IRA) values. The IRA concept promotes compassion, tolerance, and dialogue. These values serve as a potential ideological counterweight to extremism. Using a quantitative survey method, data from 369 students were analysed through Pearson's correlation to examine the relationship between inclusive Islamic values and radical tendencies. The results revealed that the majority of students had internalised IRA values, demonstrating high levels of positive attitudes across all four domains. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation (p < 0.01) between IRA values and radical inclinations. This suggests that students who embrace moderate Islamic ethics are less vulnerable to extremist ideologies. Notably, tolerance and democratic values exhibited the strongest inverse relationships with fanatical and radical attitudes. These findings emphasise the importance of incorporating inclusive Islamic values into higher education curricula as a preventive measure against ideological radicalisation. By fostering environments that emphasise peace, pluralism, and civic responsibility, educational institutions can play a key role in promoting moderation and resilience against extremism among young people.
