Abstract

This study aims to analyze the cultural resilience of the Mantu Bubak tradition in the Madiun City community, East Java, in facing the pressures of modernity. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design and an ethnographic perspective. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that the Mantu Bubak tradition persists through a process of cultural negotiation reflected in three main dimensions: adaptation, transformation, and continuity. Adaptation is seen in changes in location and implementation mechanisms to adapt to the context of urban society. Transformation is demonstrated through the reinterpretation of the meaning and aesthetics of the tradition, while continuity is reflected in the persistence of core values such as togetherness, mutual cooperation, and the practice of sharing. This study shows that the sustainability of a tradition does not depend on the integrity of a rigid ritual form, but rather on the community's ability to dynamically adapt the practices and meanings of the tradition. Unlike previous studies that tend to emphasize the ritual aspect or symbolic meaning in general, this study highlights how urban communities negotiate social space and cultural symbols in maintaining traditional identity. These findings confirm that cultural resilience is a dynamic process that allows traditions to remain relevant amidst social change.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the dialectic between tradition and modernity in the transformation of wedangan in the city of Surakarta. Historically, wedangan served as an egalitarian culinary space and a source of social cohesion based on subsistence strategies. However, in the contemporary urban context, wedangan has undergone a reconstruction of meaning with the emergence of modern wedangan. This study explores the cultural strategies employed by wedangan owners in reinterpreting tradition, as well as understanding visitors’ perceptions of today’s wedangan. This study employs Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological qualitative approach, supported by netnographic data and field observations conducted at three wedangan locations in Surakarta, namely Wedangan Pendhopo, Wedangan Sakeca and Wedangan Oemah Joglo as well as in-depth interviews. The results of this study indicate that contemporary wedangan are hybrid entities that reconstruct Javanese cultural symbols as an adaptation strategy within the framework of multiple modernities, whilst simultaneously serving as an arena for class distinction through the commodification of nostalgia. This transformation has led to the fading of the wedangan’s function as an egalitarian public space and the strengthening of individualistic consumption patterns among the urban middle class. These findings contribute to a sociological understanding of the negotiation of local culinary traditions within the currents of urban modernity.

Abstract

Accessibility of electoral information is a crucial element in supporting the realization of inclusive democracy, particularly for persons with disabilities who still experience various limitations in obtaining public information. Equal access to election information enables the public to understand their political rights and actively participate in the democratic process. This study aims to analyze the accessibility of election information. The study used a qualitative method with a descriptive approach throuh observation, documentation, and literature review related to public communication and inclusive democracy. The results show that the dissemination of election information has been carried out through digital publications, institutional documentation, and public communication activities. However, information accessibility still does not fully accommodate the needs of persons with disabilities due to limited disability-friendly media, a lack of alternative information formats, and suboptiomal inclusive communication strategies. From a social inclusion perspective, limited access to information can lead to social  exclusion and low political participation of vulberable groups. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen inclusive public communication and develop accessible information media to support equal political participation and inclusive democracy.

Abstract

This study examines shifts in teachers' social and cultural authority through a socio-anthropological analysis of conflicts between educators and parents regarding student discipline in Jambi. The study is motivated by the increasing criminalization of teachers stemming from disciplinary actions at school that escalate into legal and social issues, a trend exacerbated by digital media's role in accelerating public judgment. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing case study methods within a constructivist paradigm. Primary data were obtained through content analysis of the viral video "Teacher Suspected of Conducting Hair Raid on Students in Jambi," while secondary data were drawn from legal documents, media reports, academic journals, and literature on the sociology and anthropology of education. Digital ethnography was applied to analyze public narratives and responses in digital spaces. The findings reveal that the conflict originated from the enforcement of hair regulations as part of the teacher's pedagogical responsibilities; however, due to post-Reform shifts in social values and growing individual rights awareness, parents interpreted these actions differently. The failure of communication and mediation caused the conflict to escalate from the school environment to formal legal proceedings, ultimately reaching a hearing before the House of Representatives' Commission III. Social media functioned as an "informal court" that preceded formal legal processes and accelerated public judgment before facts were fully verified. This study concludes that the issue is structural and socio-anthropological in nature, necessitating stronger legal protections for teachers, greater clarity regarding disciplinary boundaries, and improved communication and mediation mechanisms between schools and parents.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the use of TikTok Shop as an online shopping platform among residents of Sukaindah Village, Baros District. This study applies a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and document collection with informants selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research findings indicate that TikTok Shop facilitates access, offers quite affordable prices, and various attractive promotions such as discounts and free shipping, thus encouraging people to shop online. In addition, the live broadcast feature is a major attraction because it allows direct interaction between sellers and buyers. The use of TikTok Shop also influences changes in people’s consumption patterns, as seen from increased ease of shopping and product knowledge, as well as the emergence of consumptive behaviors such as unplanned purchases, wastefulness, and a tendency to follow trends. Therefore, TikTok Shop not only functions as a transaction facility, but also influences people’s mindsets and lifestyles in fulfilling their needs and desires.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the formation of socio-cultural identity in the Between Two Gates area in Purbayan Village, a heritage village in Yogyakarta. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review, then analyzed using an interactive model that includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions with triangulation techniques to ensure data validity. The results show that socio-cultural identity in Purbayan Village is formed through the integration of historical aspects, physical space, and ongoing social practices. The Between Two Gates area serves as a social space that represents the collective identity of the community through traditional settlement patterns, intense social interactions, and the values of harmony and mutual cooperation. Cultural identity is also reflected in the combination of material elements such as traditional house architecture and village landscapes, as well as non-material elements in the form of values, norms, and traditions passed down from generation to generation. This area functions as a living heritage that connects the past with the present through adaptation practices, such as the use of traditional spaces for social activities and cultural tourism.

Abstract

This study examines the sustainability of sorume-based weaving craftsmanship among the Tolaki community in Konawe Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, and explores the socio-cultural dynamics affecting its continuity. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants included weaving artisans, traditional leaders, and community members involved in the use and distribution of sorume raw materials. The findings show that sorume weaving functions not only as a traditional handicraft but also as a marker of cultural identity and social symbolism within Tolaki society. Sorume, the primary raw material, is historically found in Mowewe, East Kolaka Regency, creating a dependency of Konawe artisans on supply networks from that area. Historically, sorume weaving was associated with the prestige of the aristocratic class (sangia), but it has gradually transformed into a cultural commodity accessible to a broader public. The study further reveals that weaving skills are transmitted through women within the domestic sphere; however, artisan regeneration faces challenges due to declining youth interest, the complexity of production processes, and limited raw material availability. From Pierre Bourdieu’s perspective, this situation reflects a weakening transmission of cultural capital within artisan families. At the same time, cultural commodification creates a tension between cultural preservation and market demands. Although commodification has altered the symbolic meaning of sorume, it has also contributed to maintaining the continuity of the weaving tradition amid contemporary social change.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how gender stereotypes toward women are reproduced within the social life of the Sade Traditional Tourism Village, Central Lombok, and to analyze their relationship with the level of formal educational attainment among girls in the community. Sade Village is a Sasak indigenous community that continues to preserve its traditional values, social norms, and customary regulations (awig-awig) as the foundation of everyday life. Despite the growth of tourism, these cultural practices continue to shape gender-based roles and expectations. This research employed a qualitative method using an empirical approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with ten local informants, including traditional leaders, parents, women weavers, and community members, and supported by documentation as complementary data. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the low level of formal educational attainment among women is strongly influenced by cultural stereotypes that confine women to domestic responsibilities. The obligation for girls to master weaving (nyesek) from an early age is regarded as an indicator of social readiness for marriage, causing formal education to be viewed as a secondary priority. As a consequence, women experience limited access to education, the persistence of gender-based marginalization, and the reproduction of unequal gender roles within the social and economic structure of the local tourism community.
