Abstract

This article focuses on the roots of radicalism as can be seen in young Muslims in NTT Province. The majority of the population of this province are either Protestant or Catholic Christians. Nationally, NTT has a reputation for being a province which is coloured by religious tolerance. People of different religions live side by side peacefully. A probable reason for this is the fact that family and friendship relationships tend to cross religious boundaries. However, in recent times religious harmony has been impacted by radical  thinking among tertiary Muslim students. These seeds can be seen in their understanding of, and attitude to, radical Islamism. At the level of understanding, they do not differentiate between Islam as a religion and Islam as an ideology. At times they identify radical Islamism as the teaching of Islam. Attitude-wise, this article points out that a considerable number of respondents hold certain convictions which are in line with the ideology of radical Islamism. Keywords: Radical Islamism, fundamentalism, radical Islam, Islamic student, ideology of a Islam, terror, terrorism.

Abstract

The ecclesiastical leaders have made policies that encourage the faithful to worship at home as a part of the effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Online Mass became a principal solution to fulfill Sunday's obligations. This article aims to evaluate the online Mass practice from the believers' perspective. To study people's attitudes towards online Masses, interviews were conducted and results showed that people in general were dissatisfied with this practice. Underlying the dissatisfaction were assumptions, which need to be clarified, for example, that Mass as being identical to Holy Communion is considered the only way to fulfill the Sunday's obligations. In fact, there are a number of religious practices and doctrinal teachings that could serve as better alternatives to the Eucharistic celebration on Sundays. This paper concludes that online Mass is not the right solution to the problem of worship during the pandemic.Key words: Covid-19, kewajiban hari Minggu, misa daring, Komuni Kudus, communio

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between the circular economy amid the Covid-19 pandemic and Christian ethics using the latest literature in management, business ethics, and Christian ethics. Recently, many studies have been conducted on the circular economy, which is seen to be an alternate form of economic activity that benefits the underprivileged and the natural environment. However, it appears that the ethical implications of this circular economy have gotten limited attention. Christian ethics, especially the Catholic Social Teachings, provides a source of inspiration for the sustainable development of economic thought. The data analysis method used in this study was bibliometric analytical procedures, which involved collecting articles from Scopus, Google Scholar, and CrossRef databases. VOSviewer software was used to map keywords from these papers in order to identify research gaps in the region to be investigated. In addition, a qualitative analysis of the selected papers using the Atlas.ti program version 9 highlights the quantitative findings and delves deeper into the research themes. This research indicated that discussions about the circular economy are still mostly unrelated to aspects of ethics, morality, and religiosity, implying that more research is needed to go deeper into those areas.Key words: Catholic Social Teaching, bibliometric, circular economy, Christian ethics, Covid-19.

Abstract

Abstract: This article departs from the declaration of the global ethos, which was declared by the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago, in 1993. It expresses the belief that many people can agree with the principles and values stated in it. After that the question is raised how this ethos can be implemented. To answer this question, the article follows the suggestion of Hans Küng, the initiator of the global ethos, that every religion should investigate its traditions, in order to find a deeper understanding of these values and the motivations that can help to develop attitudes that support these values. So in this article a description is made of the Christian tradition, of God’s law and the essence of sin as a force and as human action. Then the whole history of salvation is described as an attempt from God to introduce himself with His true face as God who wants humans to have life in all the abundance, which therefore can be trusted as the basis and guarantor of human life and existence. Finally follows the conclusion that this truth about God needs to be proclaimed by the Christian Church, so that in response to God’s actions and works, humans can become able to let go selfishness and compulsion to seek as much wealth and power for themselves as possible. So people can become capable of practicing the values as stated in the declaration of the global ethos. Keywords: global ethos, parliament of world religions, God’s law, core power of sin, Paul’s theology, justification, covenant theology.

Abstract

This essay elaborates the Critical Theory proposed by a group of German intellectuals who revived the anti-capitalist social theory of Karl Marx. They belong to what is called the “Frankfurt-School” which emphasises the contextualisation of Marx’ theory. Critical Theory emerged as a response to anti-socialist dominance in contemporary society. This essay takes up some of the ideas of Frankfurt-School members Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and Jürgen Habermas. Critical Theory can impact greatly on how we read present-day Indonesian society which is being destroyed by the global capitalist-system which in turn is producing social diseases like systemic corruption. Abstract

This article attempts to portray a picture of the cultural dimension in managing the boundaries of Nusa Tenggara Timur Province (NTT). The social dynamics of the culture of people at the boundary can be seen from the history of the formation of the boundaries, the dynamics of relationships between ethnic groups in districts adjacent to boundaries, and from social-cultural relationship problems that occur at boundaries. The conceptual framework used is that of a shift in the meaning of boundary from conventional social perspectives and approaches which emphasise the presence of a people’s and a state’s identity and control of the population, towards a post-modern approach which explains the appearance of globalizing agents at the boundary. Based on the results of interviews with a number of informants and a study of the literature, this study puts forward the proposition that the representation of the adat (customary law) community in the governing body of the state border is absolutely necessary to protect the basic rights of indigenous peoples who settled in the boundary area. Conventional border management, namely the traditional restriction of crossing boundaries, tend to put the state in violation of customary law that unites the two community cultures in colonial times.

A social trend that should trigger an emotional reaction in Indonesia as a nation that has enjoyed independence for the past 68 years, is none other than human trafficking. Indonesia is listed at 114 in the register of this modern form of slavery with around 220 thousand victims9 . Globally, there are around 29.8 million victims of human trafficking. Indonesia is one of the 17 source, transit and destination countries, involving criminal activities such as sex slavery, forced labour and child procurement. This situation is pretty evenly spread among all of Indonesia’s Provinces. The roots, the process and a way forward are highlighted in this brief study. Abstract

To recall the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, in the first place the author describes the basic texture of the council, namely its spirit of renewal and dialogue and its emphasis upon the church as the people of God. Then follows a brief response to the event itself leading to questions that remain open, mentioning some four groups of issues that were not settled by the council. The next section looks at some limitations in councilar teaching which made implementation difficult in the post-counciliar period. These include the non-awareness of the council participants of the need for legally binding decree, and the way in which, time and again, mutually contradictory statements are placed side by side in the documents without any attempt to relate the two contrary directions implied. By making use of these two weaknesses, the Roman Curia in particular has tried to neutralise a number of reforms, among others, by recentralising the decision making processes of the Catholic Church. One challenge we face 50 years after the council was openned, is to implement the principle of subsidiarity as well and as intensive as possible, and to recall the most fundamental principle in the Catholic Church, namely that each one must follow their conscience. Therefore, in openness to the gospel and conscious of the signs of the times, the struggle for renewal should take place in constructive non-obedience to efforts for restoration being undertaken in a number of quarters. Abstract

Globalization, as Anthony Giddens defines it, denotes a shift in the spatial form of human organization and activity to transcontinental or inter-regional patterns of activity, interaction and exercise of power. Under the spirit of capitalism, it can destroy our jobs, hollow out the decision-making power of government, and even threaten the nation-state as the nub of our kind of democracy. Critics of globalization worry about the inability of governments to set their own economic policies. They also worry about the increased power of financial markets to cause economic havoc. Looking at the ethical proposal to this problematic context, this article proposes that we move from an ethical study of the rational foundations of moral norms to a political reflection on the democratic construction of social norms. In such democratic construction, the plurality of views of life will be protected against overweening global capitalism. Kata-kata kunci: Globalisasi, kapitalisme, etika, demokrasi

Abstract

Sanguis Martyrum Semen Christianorum. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. This well-known expression of Tertulian concerns the growth of the faith in times of great challenge. History notes that devotion to and worship of the Eucharist has long been present in the Western Catholic tradition, and in fact has grown whenever there has been harrassment and challenge. Adoration of the Sacrament is a form of devotion that can help one to experience the presence of God in one’s life and at the same time it can be an expression of deep love of Him who has errected his tent in the midst of his people. Thus, there is a close relationship between the Eucharist and devotion. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that eucharistic devotion must never replace the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. In the order of ecclesial values, the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist has the first and highest place.
