Abstract

Abstract: This article exposes the importance of doing philosophy and theology in Indonesian context. The reason is that philosophizing and theologizing are not only pure rational activities, but ways of how to contribute significantly in the context of Indonesian society and Church. Furthermore, the article argues that pluralism, poverty, social welfare and the environmental destruction are fundamental problems and questions that philosophy and theology cope with. However, the questions are not only typical Indonesian, but global problems. Consequently, doing philosophy and theology in Indonesian context is not an exclusive activity, rather than taking part at a global and inclusive process. Keywords: philosophize, theological, Indonesia, pluralism, poverty, environment

Abstract

This paper aims to provide new insights on the importance of family catechesis during the Covid 19 pandemic. During the Covid 19 pandemic, religious activities have been eliminated or restricted. Normally, Catholics can celebrate worship at church, but that will no longer be possible after the government prohibits gathering to prevent the transmission of the Coronavirus. Therefore, this situation hinders the formation of the faith of the people. Then, there was a shift in the celebration of faith which was originally held in the church to be carried out in the family during the Covid 19 pandemic. Therefore, family catechesis in this regard plays an important role in the celebration of faith within the family itself. The methodology is a qualitative method. The data were collected from books, news, and journals. For data analysis, this study used a deductive method with maggid ritual catechesis model as a perspective. This study found that family catechesis with the maggid ritual catechesis model can answer what the Catholic family missed during the Covid 19 pandemic, namely the celebration of togetherness, the experience of community faith, internalization, and transformation. Abstract

This article is based on a book by Emanuel Martasudjita on Inculturation Theology. The author of this article supports thestatement of E. Martasudjita that inculturation of theology is not a new reality, but has been known and practicedthroughout the history of the Church. By expanding on the description given by Martasudjita regarding the stages in thedevelopment of history, the author of the article draws on the basic insight from that history that inculturated theology is notconstructed, but must grow in the reflections made by the faithful about their Christian faith, where they use the way ofthinking, they have according to the culture they live in.From the research on history, it is learned that changes in form in theology often occur based on different favorite ideasheld by different cultures, besides that there has also been the formation of new theology, where people with certain culturalbackgrounds learn theology from other cultures. In this case it is easy to misunderstand which can trigger a long discussionthat results in a new form of expression of the Christian faith.By taking the results of this historical research, the author highlights the situation of practice of faith and reflection of faithin the Flores island in South East Indonesia. Keywords: Inculturation, history of theology, local culture in Flores, Basic Ecclesial Communities

Abstract

This article presents Michael Sandel’s concept on the tyranny of meritocracy and reimagining of solidarity and itsrelevance in Indonesia. Meritocracy is a kind of ideology that believes that those who are successful deserve tobreathe their success to their heart’s content, while for those who fail, there is no one to blame but themselves.Sandel’s view is that this logic makes meritocracy undermines togetherness and solidarity as the ethical foundationof democracy. The more we think that our success is our own effort, and the poor people’s failure as their own fault,it is harder for us to imagine ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Meritocracy makes liberal society accepts as fairthe hierarchy between the rich and the poor, the smart and the stupid, or the successful and the unsuccessful. Thisbelief generates arrogance for the winners and contempt for the losers. For Sandel, Trump’s populism in the US is aform of rebellion against the tyranny of meritocracy. To counter the tyranny of meritocracy and cultivate theimagination of solidarity, we should propose the idea of humility as a public virtue. Humility is an acknowledgmentthat all our talents, achievements, and success are not the results of our own efforts but rather it depends on theresources of the community and society that accepts these talents and abilities. Keywords: Meritocracy, Solidarity, Liberalism, Community, Humility.

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the communication between the ghosts of the dead and the living. It is quite commonthat the living talk to the ghosts of the dead through different rituals in the tradional religions. On the contrary, the studyabout communication between the ghost of the dead with the living is not very common. Therefore, a question in thisresearch is: “Is there any experience that the ghost of the dead talks to the living?” The assumption is that: there iscommunication between the ghost of the dead and the living. Using descriptive-qualitative method of research, the result ofthis study shows that there is communication between the ghosts of the dead and the living. The communication takes placethrough the medium of the paranormal in which the paranormal man or woman invites the ghost of the dead to talk to his orher family through paranormal man or woman or simply to get the message from the ghost. The communication also takesplace through dreams, and later on the message or messages that iare delivered in the dream become real or reallyhappened. Then, the communication of the ghost of the dead and the living is analyzed using postmodernism, fenomenology, and ethnometodology perspectives. Each perspective argues that the communication between the dead and the living isunderstandable and academically acceptable. Keywords: communication, dead, living, dream, paranormal, post modernism, fenomenolgy, and ethnomethodology.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the political economy of the Internet and its relevance to democracy. Thiselaboration is an alternative to the utopian and dystopian techno-determinist approaches in viewing the relationshipbetween the Internet and democracy. From a political economy perspective, the Internet and its various derivatives, such as search engines, social media, e-commerce, and other platforms, are not only networks and communicationplatforms, but also instruments of commodification, surveillance, and control by global digital companies that basedin the United States of America to millions of users around the world. From the results of the literature study andconceptual analysis of the processes of commodification, surveillance, and control, the authors conclude that claimsabout the democratic characteristics of the Internet are ideological in nature. The claim hides the economic andpolitical interests of the United States and its global digital companies. What the United States and these globaldigital companies have done has stripped away basic democratic values, such as respect for and protection ofhuman rights, freedom, and equality. From that conclusion, the authors suggest the need for openness andmultilateral globalism in Internet governance so that it is more friendly towards democratic values.Key words: Commodification, democracy, Internet, political economy, surveillance

Abstract

This paper emphasizes globalization as a cultural phenomenon, one that has repeatedly been neglectedacademically. It is better known as an economic phenomenon for its capitalism-related, production-orientedsystem and economic growth. Thus, the global economy is no longer affected by nations but the transnationalcompanies. However, the global economy primarily is a cultural phenomenon. Closely related to economicglobalization is the spread of the Western civilization model which includes Western cultural values, marketeconomy, production patterns, consumption patterns, and Western lifestyles. Apart from the fact that the model ofWestern civilization has its own charm, the dissemination of this model is also embodied by ideological conceit, namely an attitude that imposes its own cultural values on other parties. This development certainly triggers anextreme attitude that rejects universal values and retreats into one's own particular culture. To prevent the clashof civilizations, intercultural dialogue becomes notable. Globalization offers opportunities for cross-culturalencounters, and therefore the establishment of a “clash of cultures” must be regarded as a myth. Keywords: Globalization, economy, religion, dialogue, ambivalence

Abstract

This article aims to introduce two inspiring figures or models of involved priests, namely Oscar Romero and John Prior. Through comparative analysis of qualitative data, it is discovered that there are differences between Romero and John in terms of historical background, context, and methods or forms of involvement. Romero was a priest who later became a bishop and faced the authoritarian government in El Salvador, while Prior was a priest and intellectual who was concerned with the internal realities of the Church in Indonesia. Romero used the method of preaching and prophetic discourse, while John’s method is sharing the Scriptures. Despite these differences, both are two inspirational figures who contextualize their faith in God by being in solidarity with and living with the poor. The suffering experienced by the marginalized has honed the sensitivity to act and the ability to go beyond the boundaries of social partition. They do not confine themselves to a sacred space and stay away from the profane world, but instead merge themselves into the midst of people who are marginalized either by an oppressive regime or by stigmatization. Romero and John are models of involved priests because for them involvement with the marginalized is a form of priestly accountability before God and the people they serve.Key words : involved priest, profile, method, Oscar Romero, John Prior

Abstract

Abstract: This article discusses social exchange in the relationship between money and power, where money as an economic medium can direct power politically. The framework of thought used refers to Karl Marx. However, this research puts forward a method of critical thinking analysis, with a new approach to reading Marx as pioneered by the Frankfurt School. The steps taken include investigation, interpretation, and deliberation within the framework of a qualitative study. As a result, it appears that there is a development of Marx's theory of value from originally related to concrete work to be intertwined with abstract work through the mediation of money. This research also finds that the tangled threads of social exchange in relation to money and power are formed through fetishism. The worship of money as an independent value binds the existence of value to the form of money. This then manifests impersonal domination. Prioritization of money occurs at the expense or neglect of social relationships and human values. To overcome this tangle, it is necessary to reject the logic of capital, which makes everything rely on money.Fundamentally, this rejection refers to universal, particular, and singular frames in Žižek's review. Within this framework, the rejection of singular, specific individuals or groups, particularly operative organizational programs, and protest movements with broad universal alliances must work together to drive change. Keywords: Money, Power, Karl Marx, Social Exchange, Fetishism.
