Abstract

Abstract: Populism generally expresses the conflict between the majority of the people who are “out of power” versus the powerful small elites. The competition is the response to the perpetuating social divisiveness between the small elites and the marginalized majority. Hence, populism can be described as a social and political protest of the citizens against the failures of elitically and pro establishment oriented representative democracy. In this case, the democracy tends to leave the people behind who are the primary goal of the the democracy itself. This essay tries to pose some criticism against the practices of the liberal democracy tranformed into a consensus machine and in this way ignores the dissensual or conflictual aspect of the democracy. The dissensus democracy emphasizes the unlimited conflictual dimension of the democratic discourse. From the point of view of the dissensual democracy, populism can appear as social transformative forces that bring back the democracy to its original meaning as an expression of the people’s sovereignity. However, this can only be realized in a pluralistic millieu and populism can be transformed into an antagonistic democracy. Finally, the essay argues that the practices of populisme in Indonesia fail to be an alternative and antagonistic power to the practices of the Indonesian democracy coopted by the predatory oligarchy. The reason is that the populistic leaders in Indonesia including the Jokowi regime fail to transform the populistic ideas into the new democratic institutions independent from the domination of the oligarchic political parties inherited by the New Order regime. Keywords: Populism, Democracy, Antagonism, Dissensus, Indonesia Abstrak: Secara umum populisme mengungkapkan pertentangan antara rakyat kebanyakan (the people) yang tidak berkuasa versus segelintir kecil elite yang berkuasa. Abstract

Abstract: Philosophy is often popularly accepted as an abstractscience and unrealistic. The reality of human life is not touchedby philosophy. This assumption must be falsified. Philosophy isnot a science that comes from another planet. From the beginning, philosophy was closely related to human reflection about his life inthe context of the macrocosm and microcosm. Philosophy thinksabout human life and presents a path to the goals of life bothpersonally and collectively. In this sense philosophy is not an purelyacademic matter, it is also not a private matter of philosophers, butit is an general matter. Everyone is able to philosophize. Keywords: Philosophy, way of life, wonder, wisdom, selfknowledge, enlightenment

Abstract

Human Rights (HAM) has achieved a lot of progress as well as a stalemate. The human rights condition at these two points also shows human rights dynamics concerning various dimensional contexts. This article explicitly discusses the significant dimensions of the dynamics of human rights. Based on a critical literature review and practical reflection, this study proposes two three-dimensional analysis models of human rights dynamics at both global and national levels. The first model deals with the historical, theoretical, and practical dimensions of human rights dynamics. The second model explains the normative-philosophical, political, and sociological dimensions of the dynamics of human rights. This article consists of several sections, including an introduction, an analytical framework, the two-dimensional model of human rights dynamics, and a conclusion. Keywords: Human rights, Human rights dynamics, State, R2P, Citizen

Abstract

In the 21st century, due to its incessant auto-criticism, the orientation of science is split into two. On the one hand, the monolythic tendency of positivism -with its physicalistic paradigm- is still prevalent. On the other, the tendency of openess toward the complexity of reality is also thriving. The latter would include the openess toward non physical variables or even toward esoteric experience. At this junction, the concept ofethnoepistemology is worth considering. With regard to this, this article seeks to see the fundamental differences between the universal-scientific epistemology and ethnoepistemology. Ethnoepistemology is examined in terms of its local ontological-worldview, which mostly is spiritual in character.  It was found out that the local worldview generates a particular knowledge, with specific logic, method and vocabulary of its own. Complemented with some case-studies, the article comes up with the idea that the mistery of the world can be accessed from many points of view, resulting in different kinds of knowledge. That said, while scientific epistemology is not the only possible one, ethnopistemology can upgrade itself by learning from the work-ethos of scientific epistemology.  Key words: episteme, worldview, logic, interdependency, holistic, experiential

Abstract

For years HIV and AIDS were considered deadly viruses. Lacking appropriate knowledge about how these viruses develop made it more difficult to treat carriers, as they were once viewed as approaching death. Also, many thought that the virus was easily contagious (although it is not). Carriers were – and still are - marginalized and so could not maintain normal life in their communities. They were stigmatized more especially when the virus was viewed as the result of an un-controlled sex life. As “sinners” they had to pay for the sin they committed. This is pararell to the situation was faced by lepers at the time of Jesus. They were avoided, must not be touched; they were removed from the community. However, Jesus accepted lepers, touched them, and in accepting them broke through cultural and religious barriors. In Luke’s account (Luke 5:12-16) the leper does not seek a cure, but rather freedom from stigmatization (“made clean”). That is the “cure” that Jesus gave and what we can, and must, give today to HIV carriers. Kata-kata kunci: kusta, tahir, stigma, HIV, AIDS, Yesus, menjamah, mengulurkan, tangan, mentahirkan.

Abstract

The 16 th Century Protestant Reformation, triggered by Martin Luther and fellow reformers, eventually resulted in violent conflicts between various Church movements and their individual political supporters. These conflicts brought about a new awareness in the European peoples of the time, that the moralization of politics based on the truth of one religious group/Church always represents a clear threat to the life of a pluralistic society. The function of state politics is to guarantee life in peace together, with freedom and justice, among people who have differing religious convictions and who wish to establish a country together. On the contrary, religious fundamentalism is the greatest enemy of a country in so far as it attacks the principle of state secularism and fights for a return to state politics as an issue of “right or wrong”. To the extent that fundamentalism rejects the autonomy of the political system and enforces without compromise its own absolute truth on others, it is a clear threat to peace. Keywords: Reformation, Church, Fundamentalism, State, Politics, Truth, Peace --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reformasi Protestan pada abad XVI yang dipelopori Martin Luther dengan kawan-kawan berujung pada konflik peperangan antargereja yang berbeda dan masing-masing pendukung politisnya. Abstract

Human trafficking, which has become a serious problem in our time, also existed centuries ago, especially when slavery was commonly accepted. The Book of Genesis shares the story of the selling by his brothers of a person named Joseph. Different from human trafficking these days, the reason for selling Joseph was more about envy than money. Envy triggered the brothers’ plot to eliminate Joseph from their family. Whatever the reason, in Egypt Joseph was put on the auction block and bought and sold as a bill of goods. The Joseph-Judah story tracks the first human trafficking case in the Bible inviting the reader to be aware of how people are bought and sold. The sellers –Jospeh’s brothers and especially Judah – do not want to be known as the culprits. Nobody is willing to admit commiting this crime, instead, one always pretends to be innocent. Meanwhile Joseph’s identity is stripped away as the story continues. Human trafficking, always involves the loss of one’s social networks coupled with elimination of one’s identity. Abstract

The reform of the liturgy is to be “marked by the gong of tradition and the spirit of genuine renewal”. This “motto” of liturgical renewal reminds us of the importance of being aware that both tradition and our contemporary situation need to be experienced together in our celebrations. The purpose of the liturgical renewal by the Second Vatican Council, was not renewal for the sake of renewal itself, but rather so that celebrations produced by such reform are meaningful for the active participation of the people of God. To achieve this ideal, judicious considerations need to be taken regarding tradition and contemporary developments. One important fruit of the analysis of the Second Vatican Council is that active participation should become ever wider and deeper in our liturgical celebrations. Participation that is both active and conscious whether physically, together with the whole rich genius of the culture, or spiritually, is a part of the richness of grace for which we should indeed thank God. The presence of Sacrosanctum concilium invites all social levels and classes to participate actively and consciously in sacrificial celebrations and in the Lord’s Supper. Abstract

Abstract: There are at least two general impressions about Church Reform that took place 500 years ago, namely (1) the Reformation sought - and to some extent succeeded – in renewing the doctrine and life of the Church; and (2) the Reformation caused divisions within the Church. This article will examine whether and to what extent these two impressions are correct, and what impact and significance this is for the Church today, especially in Indonesia. To discuss these issues thoroughly, we certainly need more deep and detailed research. This paper is limited to several aspects and examples, while including several other points. Keywords: reformation, Church, theology, controversy of theology, base color, ecumenical, ecumenical movement. Abstract

Abstract Making use of the haecceitas theory of Duns Scotus, this text critiques the statement that every person, and in fact everything created, and especially people with disabilities, have an individual uniqueness. This is based upon the uniqueness of the Triune God who is relational. “Normal” people have self control, can decide and make personal choices. They can stand on their own two feet, and they are not dependent on others. The individuality or personality of a disabled person is often reduced because the disabled person is regarded as one who cannot do “normal” activities without assistance. All living creatures are relational beings because they have been created by and in God who is relational. The Church witnesses, in the Athanasian Creed, to the belief that the Triune God is Three separate Persons while being One in Essence.
