Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to investigate students' proficiency in analyzing scientific arguments within research papers, a critical skill for successfully composing a thesis project. Despite its importance, many students struggle to interpret scientific literature effectively as a reference source in their research. Therefore, this research evaluates students' abilities to identify various elements of scientific arguments in academic works. Design/methods/approach – Adopting a quantitative research approach, this study utilized descriptive analysis techniques. Conducted during the even semester of the 2021/2022 academic year, the primary instrument for data collection was a rubric designed to identify scientific arguments. Findings – The findings indicate varied proficiency levels among prospective Islamic primary teacher students in identifying different components of scientific arguments. The percentage of students accurately identifying motives was 49.3%, objectives 86%, conclusions 74.7%, implications 56%, support 10%, counterarguments 13.3%, and refutations 8%. These results highlight a significant gap, particularly in identifying support, counterarguments, and refutations, suggesting that student's ability to discern scientific arguments needs substantial improvement. Research implications – The outcomes of this study are particularly valuable for universities in their efforts to enhance the argumentation skills of future teachers. Additionally, these findings will contribute to the development of effective learning strategies or models specifically tailored to improve the argumentation skills of prospective Islamic primary teacher students, thereby enhancing their academic and professional capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose – This article aims to explore the integrative role of family education, community, and school in the process of reactualizing the identity and cultural heritage of Betawi, focusing on two main questions: (1) How do family education, school, and community contribute to maintaining and promoting the Betawi culture? Moreover, (2) How do these three elements interact in reactualizing Betawi cultural identity?. Design/methods/approach – This study employs a qualitative approach, mainly historical research, to analyze the evolution and dynamics of Betawi culture. Data were collected through the study of historical and contemporary documents and group discussion forums with experts in Betawi history and culture. The data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's method. Findings – The research reveals that family education, schools, and communities play a significant role in maintaining and promoting Betawi culture. Families contribute to teaching language and customs, schools provide formal education about the history and culture of Betawi, and communities strengthen cultural practices through social and communal activities. This study also highlights the richness and complexity of Betawi culture, consisting of various elements such as language, livelihoods, social systems, occupations, education, beliefs, and arts. Research implications – The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the importance of a multidimensional approach in understanding and preserving Betawi culture. These findings affirm the crucial roles of family education, schools, and communities as integral components in actualizing cultural identity, especially amid the challenges of globalization and modernization. The study also suggests the need for more integrated and comprehensive cultural preservation strategies, considering the influence of history, location, language, and religion.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the differences in the self-efficacy of Raudhatul Athfal (RA) teachers in implementing inclusive Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Semarang Regency, considering their educational background and teaching experience. The focus of this research is to understand the extent to which these two variables influence teachers' confidence in delivering inclusive education, which is a crucial element for the success of education for children with special needs (CSN). Design/methods/approach – This study employs a quantitative approach with a causal-comparative design, where data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 115 RA teachers across 16 institutions in Semarang Regency. The instrument used was the Teacher Efficacy for Inclusive Practices (TEIP), which has been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the impact of educational background and teaching experience on teachers' self-efficacy. Findings – The findings indicate significant differences in teachers' self-efficacy based on educational background and teaching experience (P < 0.05). Teachers with an S1 (Bachelor's Degree) in Early Childhood Education (PAUD) have higher self-efficacy levels compared to those with a high school/vocational school (SMA/SMK) background and a general S1 (Bachelor's Degree). Moreover, more than five years of teaching experience correlates with an increase in teachers' self-efficacy in managing inclusive education. Research implications – This research contributes to the limited literature on teacher self-efficacy in the context of inclusive ECE within RA institutions under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The study provides new insights into the factors that influence teachers' confidence in managing inclusive education, particularly in early childhood education.
