Abstract

This study discusses the significant role of Sutan Sjahrir in the Jong Indonesia organization as part of the struggle for Indonesian independence. Sutan Sjahrir, a young intellectual and nationalist figure, is known as one of the ten pioneering youths in the establishment of Jong Indonesia, which later changed its name to Pemuda Indonesia. This organization became the driving force behind the birth of the Youth Pledge in 1928, an important milestone in uniting the spirit of nationalism across regions and ethnicities. This study uses a historical method with the stages of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Data were obtained through literature studies of primary sources such as books by Rudolf Mrazek and Y.B. Mangunwijaya, as well as secondary sources from scientific journals and relevant documents. The results of the study show that Sjahrir played an important role not only as the initiator of the organization, but also as the driver of the idea of national unity through an intellectual approach and social movements. Through his activities in education, journalism, and youth organizations, Sjahrir was able to spread progressive ideas that challenged colonialism and inspired a spirit of nationalism among the younger generation. His role in building the foundation of modern nationalist thought and non-violent struggle is an important legacy for Indonesia's journey to independence.

Abstract

This research discusses the Lampung Pepper Trade to Banten and its influence on social status in the 17th century. This research uses historical research methods, namely, heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. This research found that the people of Lampung obtained social status after selling Lada to the Banten sultanate based on certain heavy provisions. The awarding of the title occurred because of Lampung's close relationship with Banten, which was driven by the importance of the pepper trade at that time. As the main commodity, pepper connects Lampung with the international trade network through the port of Banten. The Sultanate of Banten built good relations with the people of Lampung to maintain a stable supply of pepper and meet the ever-increasing global demand. This trade point not only had an impact on the economy but also influenced the social structure in Lampung. The social title given reflected close economic interactions as well as changes in status. Lampung social community.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of slideshow-based video media on students’ critical thinking skills in the topic of Prehistoric Indonesia at SMA Negeri 1 Cikeusal in the 2020/2021 academic year. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with purposive sampling. The sample was collected in August–September 2020. Data on students’ critical thinking skills were obtained through pretests and posttests administered to both control and experimental classes. Data were analyzed using a t-test. The findings indicate a significant difference in critical thinking skills between students who used slideshow-based video media and those who did not. The one-tailed t-test at α = 0.05 showed that t calculated exceeded t table, thus rejecting Hâ‚€ and accepting Hₐ. It can be concluded that the use of slideshow-based video media has a significant influence on students’ critical thinking skills in the topic of Prehistoric Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the intellectual biography of Henry Alexis Rudolf (HAR) Tilaar, one of Indonesia’s most prominent educational figures, particularly in the context of critical-transformative pedagogy. Tilaar viewed education not merely as a medium of knowledge transmission but as an instrument for liberating human beings from injustice, oppression, and social inequality by fostering critical awareness among individuals and society. The research employs the historical method with a literature review approach as the primary source to trace the dynamics of Tilaar’s educational thought over time. The findings reveal that Tilaar’s ideas evolved in an unusual trajectory: beginning with a conservative tendency in his youth, moving toward a constructive orientation during his service at Bappenas, and later becoming increasingly critical and radical after his retirement. This pattern stands in contrast to the general tendency among scholars, who often grow more conservative as their socio-economic status becomes more secure, whereas Tilaar became progressively more critical and radical in his educational perspectives.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the dynamics of Islamic thought and civilization in Indonesia from the perspective of history and ideological transformation, as well as evaluate its relevance and application in Islamic education today. The problems studied include how the intellectual journey of Islam in Indonesia developed from the early days of Islam to the contemporary era, changes in the paradigm of thought from traditionalism to modernism and neo-modernism, and how this thinking can be the basis for the development of adaptive, inclusive and progressive Islamic education. The focus of the research is directed at the ideological transformation of Islamic thought and its relevance in the context of modern Islamic education that is able to shape character and national insight according to the dynamics of today's society. The method used is library research with a historical and intellectual approach, involving the collection, verification, interpretation, and historiography of literary sources such as books, scientific articles, and related documents. The results show that Islamic thought in Indonesia has experienced a dynamic and plural development, ranging from traditional influences that are accommodating to local culture, to the emergence of modern and neo-modern thought that emphasizes rationality, pluralism, and democracy. This transformation has implications for Islamic education, which is now increasingly integrating Islamic values with the needs of the times, forming people with character and insight, and strengthening an inclusive and adaptive national education system.

Abstract

Layar Tanjleb, the flagship program of the Purbalingga Film Festival (FFP) since 2007, offers an alternative form of entertainment resembling traditional open-air cinema. Initiated by Bowo Leksono, a former Jakarta journalist and founder of the Cinema Lovers Community (CLC), the program aims to promote film culture in Purbalingga. Its first film, “Orang Buta dan Penuntunnya” (2004), sparked mobile film screenings for high school students starting in 2005. Layar Tanjleb organizes free open-air screenings, showcasing fiction and documentary films by young directors, including works in the local Javanese Ngapak dialect. This study explores the evolution of Layar Tanjleb as a digital-era form of entertainment and its impacts on the creative economy as well as socio-cultural aspects. Using historical methods (heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, historiography) combined with interviews, observations, and literature review, the research demonstrates how Tanjleb strengthens local identity. The findings reveal that, to date, Tanjleb has screened 858 films and reached more than 135,000 viewers. The program has proven effective in reinforcing community bonds, promoting cultural pride, and stimulating growth. Layar Tanjleb is not merely entertainment, but also a medium of cultural education, local identity promotion, and a driving force of the creative economy ecosystem in Purbalingga.

Abstract

This research examines the role of jeans as a symbol of social resistance in student demonstrations in Jakarta in 1970-1998. Initially seen as an icon of modernity and globalization, jeans over time became an identity for students and activists who opposed the repressive policies of the New Order. During the 1974 Malari Demonstrations, students wore jeans as a form of criticism against economic dependence on foreign capital, and signaled their solidarity with workers affected by ongoing economic injustice. During the 1998 Reformation, jeans reappeared as a symbol of resistance against the Soeharto government, which was considered authoritarian and corrupt. This research uses a historical research method with a social history approach. The research process includes collecting data sources (heuristics), analyzing data validity (source criticism), interpreting the symbolic meaning of jeans, and compiling historical narratives (historiography). By referring to Sartono Kartodirdjo's concept of social history, the results of this study show that material culture, such as jeans, is not only part of the lifestyle, but also a form of political expression tool in the student movement. The existence of this research can confirm that clothing can also play a role in shaping collective identity and voicing aspirations for social change in society.
