Abstract

This study is primarily concerned style of presenting moral values in the Rainbow Troops by Andrea Hirata. This novel tells about how ten children struggle for their study and do many amazing experiences. The problems of the study focused on the style of presenting moral values and types of moral values in Rainbow Troops. This type of research is qualitative research. Method of collecting the data the method used in this research is the listening method and is combined with the note technique. The first step of this research is to collect conversation between character in the novel and the classify each use of style found language. Based on the result of the classification, the research analyses conversations containing figurative language and analyse meaning stylistic pragmatics. There are several sentences in this study, the language as follows allegorical language style, language style hyperbole, metaphorical language style, metonymy style, style simile and personification style.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of flouting maxim found in Buffalo Bill's novel and to find out the reasons for the characters to flouting the maxims. The researcher used the theory by Grice (1975) to find out the types of maxims in Buffalo Bill's novel, and Cutting (2002) theory to find out the strategies of characters in Buffalo Bill's novel violate these maxims. The data is collected from the novel Buffalo Bill, The Border King where the novel tells the reader about the life story of William F. Cody or known as Buffalo Bill during the Civil War. It was written by Colonel Ingraham and Ned Buntline and published by STREET & SMITH in 1907. The story focuses on the journey of Buffalo Bill. As a result of the analysis of research data, four types of maxim violations were committed by the characters in the novel Buffalo Bill. There is a flouting of maxim of quantity, flouting of maxim of quality, flouting of maxim of relevance, and flouting of maxim of manner. There are a total of twenty records found in Buffalo Bill's novel. flouting of maxim of quantity appears 10 times (47.7%), flouting of maxim of quality does not occur (0%), flouting of maxim of relevance appears 9 times (47.7%), and maxim of manner appears once (4,6%). In the strategy of the characters in the novel Buffalo bill violating the maxims, there are five types of causes for the characters to violate the maxims.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the language style used by Jack Ma in the video “Dialogue with Jack Ma, Alibaba Group, Kief 2019”. This research is conducted by applying the theory five types of language style proposed by Joos (1967). The data were taken from the conversation between Nik Gowing as the host, Jack Ma as the guest and audience business in Ukraine. This research used qualitative method in analysing the data. This study found three types of language style used in dialogue Jack Ma, Alibaba group. The study found formal style, consultative style and casual style on this research. Formal style is used dominantly found in the dialogue. The use of formal style by a word of choice, situation and condition, participant and place. In this style the researcher found six data, while in the casual style, the researcher found five data, for the consultative style, the researcher found five data used by Jack Ma in the video” Dialogue with Jack Ma, Alibaba Group, Kief 2019.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the types of figure of speech used in the song lyric of John Legend album Bigger Love. The data were analyzed by using the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Rreninger (1963). In analyzing the data, this study uses observation method in collecting the data and descriptive method uses in analyzing the data. The result of this study showed that six types of figure of speech used in the song lyric of John Legend album Bigger Love, that there were 22 data the figure of speech used in the song lyric of John Legend album Bigger Love, those are 8 simile, 2 metaphor, 3 personification, 1 synecdoche, 6 hyperbole, 1 paradox.

Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis Types of Slang Word Found in Green Day Song Lyric Album”. The aim of this study is to identify the types of slang words that are found in the song lyrics of Green Day in the five albums: “1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours” (1990), “Kerplunk !”(1991), “Dookie” (1994), “Father Of All..” (2020), and the last album “American Idiot” (2004). The method being used in this study is descriptive qualitative method and the technique is observation technique. The theory used was found in Kipfer and Chapman (2007). The study concludes that the secondary slang words are the only type that were found in the Green Day song lyrics

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find out types of figurative language and their intended meanings. There are two theories that used in this research. The first theory is proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) which is used to find out types of figurative language used in Damian Marley’s song lyrics. The second theory is proposed by Leech (1981) which is used to find out the meaning of figurative language used in Damian Marley’s song lyrics. The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The writer collected the data of song lyrics by browsing and downloading song lyrics from the internet, reading and understanding song lyrics, taking note and classifying the data based on type’s figurative language. The writer analysed the data descriptively by using qualitative method. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there are six types of figurative language used in Damian Marley’s song lyrics which consist of 3 metaphors (19%), 5 similes (32%), 2 irony (12%), 3 allusion (19%), 1 synecdoche (6%), and 2 metonymies (12%). All of the figurative language have connotative meaning which implicitly deliver hidden messages and life values.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types of figurative language and the meaning intended. Two theories have been used in this study. The first theory is presented by Kennedy (1987) as used to identify the types of figures of speech used in Jamie miller's song lyrics. A second theory is presented by Leech (1974) to learn the meaning of the figures of speech used in Jamie Miller's song. The method used in data collection is the method of observation. The writers collect data of song lyrics by browsing and downloading song lyrics from the Internet, reading, listening, and understanding song lyrics, taking note and classifying data based on the types of figurative language. The writer analysed the data in a descriptive way using a qualitative method. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there are six types of figurative of language used in Jamie Miller's song lyrics which consist of 2 metaphors (16,6%), 2 similes (16,6%), 2 personifications (16,6%), 1 paradox (8,3%), 2 apostrophe (16,6%), and 3 hyperbole (24,9%). All of figurative language have a connotation that implicitly conveys hidden messages and values of life.

Abstract

The research is concerning about the maxim violation of quality in which focuses in the portrayal of context situation that can be identified in the Little movie. The cooperative principles are roles or principles by Paul Grice’s theory (1975) in which used in the conversational analysis as purpose to make the idea or information easier to recognize and acceptable by the participants, speakers or the listeners in the conversation, where the types of the maxim include: maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and lastly the maxim of manner. The analyses are about the maxim violation in the Little movie applied the descriptive method in presenting data. In this analysis focuses on violation of the maxim quality, which can be identified 15 data of maxim violation of quality, and also concerning the portrayal of the context situation (field, tenor, and mode) based on Halliday & Hassan theory (1985) that consist of several scenes.   Keywords: Maxim Violation Quality, Movie, Grice’s Theory, Context Situation

Abstract

Political speech is a strategy to persuade the political goals and interests to the audience. This study investigates the process of Critical Discourse Analysis in Kamala Harris's speech by using Three-Dimensional Model proposed by Fairclough. The data analysis was conducted by a descriptive qualitative method. This study showed that Kamala Harris represented the Democrat Party's principles, equal opportunity, and voting rights through the speech. Discursive analysis showed that Kamala Harris addressed this speech to some particular societal stakeholders, such as the feminist movement, minority groups, so on. On the other hand, social analysis represented the social effects, such as the first Indigenous cabinet secretary has confirmed. The most dominant ideology in this speech is membership/self-identity. In textual analysis, Kamala Harris also showed the one who has equality, liberty, and justice on her ideological values.

Abstract

This study analyzes the figurative language used in the song lyrics of Adele’s album “30”. The song writer plays words and language to create attraction and distinctiveness towards the lyric of the song. Figurative language has the ability to be more impactful for the readers. This study is aimed to answer two problems of the study, they are: (1) To identify the types of figurative language used in the song lyrics of Adele's album "30". (2) To analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics of Adele's album “30”. The data was analyzed based on the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) and theory of Meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1974).The result of this study showed there are 7 types of figurative language found in Adele’s album “30”. They are simile, personification, metaphor, synecdoche, hyperbole, irony and paradox. This study found 3 simile, 2 personification, 4 metaphor, 2 synecdoche, 13 hyperbole, 1 irony and 3 paradox. And otherwise in analyzing the contextual meaning this study found some types of meaning used in lyrics of song, those are connotative meaning, thematic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and stylistic meaning. The data were presented descriptively and formally by using some tables.
