Abstract

The purpose of this community service activity is to introduce and train Indonesian New Generation students (recipients of a scholarship from Bank Indonesia) at Mandalika University of Education, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara Province in processing organic waste into compost through fermentation with the help of effective microorganism (EM4) as a bioactivator. The stages of this service activity are: 1) introduction; 2) practice activities for the initial process of fermentation; and 3) follow-up activities (observation for 2 months). The 1 day activity is used to process organic waste in the form of dry and wet leaves, then chopped into smaller pieces so that it decomposes more quickly, then fermented using EM4 as a bioactivator (observations after 2 months). Compost fermentation takes at least 2 months to get better results, taking into account the factors that affect composting, including: C/N (Carbon/Nitrogen) ratio, aeration, porosity, humidity, temperature, acidity level (pH), nutrient content, hazardous material content, and composting time. Based on the results of the activity evaluation, it can be concluded that the objectives of this community service activity have been achieved as expected. This achievement can be seen from the ability of students to process organic waste into compost which is ready to be used as fertilizer for plants.

Abstract

Students of the Mandalika University of Education (UNDIKMA) each year propose a Student Creativity Program (PKM) proposal from various existing schemes. Students of the Faculty of Science, Technique, and Applied Science Mandalika University of Education each year win PKM grants. In 2021, students from the Department of Biology Education won a PKM-RE scheme, continuing in 2022, the same students won 1 incentive scheme, namely PKM-AI. However, so far the participation of Mandalika University of Education students in compiling PKM proposals is still relatively low, because there are no more than 5 teams proposing PKM each year. Therefore, the Department of Biology Education Lecturer team took the initiative to conduct training and assistance in preparing PKM proposals for 2023, with the hope that after this training and assistance, the PKM team proposing grants this year will experience an increase. The purpose of this service program is the preparation of PKM proposals from various PKM schemes offered by the Directorate General of Higher Education and Technology up to the submit stage. The results of these training and mentoring activities show an increase in student interest in proposing PKM. This is evidenced by the increasing number of submitted PKM proposals. Apart from that, the enthusiasm of the students to learn and read various kinds of articles was also seen as a reference for their respective proposals.

Abstract

The purpose of this activity is for people to know the importance of washing their hands properly, and what the impact will be if they don't wash their hands properly. The 2019 Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) pandemic has caused all activities to be carried out individually in each village while adhering to the Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The most common thing that is done in each activity is to provide education and demonstrations about Covid-19 to the surrounding community. In accordance with the Covid-19 rules, namely staying at home, the service implementing team conducted counseling by visiting residents' homes. Covid-19 is a new disease that emerged in 2019 and causes respiratory infections. The most common symptoms of Covid-19 are fever, dry cough and shortness of breath. Some people may experience head or body aches, runny nose, sore throat, or diarrhea. While some people (about 80%) will recover on their own from Covid-19 without needing special treatment, about 1 in 6 people will experience more serious symptoms and experience difficulty breathing. We are all at risk of contracting Covid-19, but older people and people with health problems such as high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to experience severe symptoms from Covid-19, and are more at risk of dying from it. People with fever, cough and shortness of breath should seek immediate medical attention. People can catch Covid-19 from other people who are already infected, regardless of whether these people have symptoms or not. This disease can spread from human to other humans through droplets (droplets/splashes of body fluids from the nose or mouth, such as saliva). Droplets are spread when someone who already has this virus in their body coughs or sneezes. Research shows that Covid-19 can survive for some time on various inanimate surfaces, such as tables or doorknobs.

Abstract

Microscope is one of the supporting media in learning Biology. With a microscope objects or organisms that are unable to be seen by the human senses can be observed clearly. The aim of this program is to increase the qualifications and capacity of Biology Education Students through increasing knowledge and skills in using and caring for microscopes. The target of this activity is first semester students of the Biology Education Study Program, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Applied, Mandalika University of Education. The methods used are lectures, discussions, questions and answers and demonstrations using a microscope properly. The results achieved were that participants were able to use a microscope to observe objects and were able to take care of the microscope after use. Participants looked very enthusiastic and interested because they were able to observe plant tissue directly under a microscope. It can be concluded that the basic operational training activities for microscopes and the introduction of laboratory tools were able to increase the participants' knowledge and skills from every aspect measured.
