Abstract

Hormonal changes, number of pregnancies (gravida), gestational age, education level, and the presence of malocclusionespecially if accompanied by the use of bracescan increase the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis in pregnant women. This study aims to analyze the relationship between gravida, gestational age, and education level on the incidence of gingivitis in pregnant women with malocclusion. The study involved 51 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria and provided consent by signing an informed consent form. Interviews and oral screenings were conducted, and the data were analyzed using the Chi-squared test. The results of this study found that the number of pregnancies (gravida) had a significant relationship with the incidence of gingivitis (p = 0.024) and dental caries (p = 0.029). Gestational age showed a significant relationship with the incidence of periodontitis (p = 0.003) and dental caries (p = 0.020). Meanwhile, educational level did not show a significant relationship with gingivitis or periodontitis, but was significantly associated with dental caries (p = 0.050). It is concluded that there is a significant relationship between gravida, gestational and education level with dental caries in pregnant women with malocclusion. Gestational age is significantly associated with periodontitis, and gravida is significantly associated with gingivitis.

Abstract

Power chains elastomers are one of the most commonly used devices in orthodontic treatment. Recently, herbal toothpastes containing siwak extract has been developed, which shown to be more effective in reducing plaque index compared to non-herbal toothpastes. However, siwak extract contains fluoride that may reduce tensile force. This study aimed to analize the effect of herbal siwak toothpaste and non-herbal toothpaste on the tensile force of orthodontic power chains elastomers. A total of 144 power chain elastomer specimens were immersed in treatment groups,Aquadest and Pepsodent Complete 8 Siwak toothpaste solution, Aquadest and Pepsodent toothpaste solution, and Aquadest as the control group. The tensile force of the power chain elastomer was measured using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) after immersion for 6, 42, 84, 126, and 168 minutes. The data were analyzed using one way ANOVA test. The result showed that after the immersion, the tensile force of power chain elastomers in aquadest, non-herbal toothpaste, and herbal siwak toothpaste were significantly different (p0,05). Herbal siwak toothpaste caused a smaller reduction in the tensile force of the orthodontic power chain elastomers compared to non-herbal toothpaste. It can be concluded that immersion in herbal siwak toothpaste results in a greater reduction in tensile force compared to the control group, which was immersed in Aquadest.

Abstract

Root canal treatment aims to eliminate infected pulp tissue and prevent further spread of infection. Howeever, initial root canal treatments does not always result in successful healing, potentially leading to post-treatment endodontic disease (PTED). This case report describes the non-surgical retreatment of a maxillary central incisor diagnosed with chronic apical periodontitis due to inadequate previous root canal treatment. A combination of eucalyptol solvent and the ProTaper Universal Retreatment System was used to enhance the removal of gutta-percha from the root canal. The retreatment approach improved clinical outcomes, with successful canal cleaning and disinfection. The use of eucalyptol can accelerate the dissolution process of gutta-percha compared to other solvents. Meanwhile, the use of the ProTaper Universal Retreatment system optimizes working time, making it faster than manual technique. Follow-up evaluations revealed favorable results, with the patient being scheduled for prosthetic restoration.

Abstract

Veillonella is a common species found in the human oral cavity that plays a significant role in biofilm ecology. Veillonella is known to play a supporting role in colonizing other, more pathogenic species. Its abundant presence in supra- and sub-gingival biofilms is thought to have an associated relationship with red-complex bacterial species. These bacteria are known to be the causative of periodontal disease. Their ability to establish this mutualistic relationship is an important factor that we need to know to expand our understanding of their relationship to the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and to develop more effective treatments.

Abstract

Fixed denture is a treatment used to replace missing teeth. Fiber Reinforced Composite using dental E-glass fiber is an alternative material due to its biocompatibility, good aesthetics, and adaptability to the oral cavity. However in Indonesia, its availibility is limited and the cost is relatively high. Non-dental E-glass fiber, which has been widely used in engineering sectors, has a composition that is largely similar to dental E-glass fiber. This study aims to understand the effect of the position of non-dental E-glass fiber on the flexural strength of Fiber Reinforced Composite. This experimental study tested Fiber Reinforced Composite with non dental E-glass fiber placed in various positions using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), and the results were analyzed with One-Way ANOVA. The test results showed that Fiber Reinforced Composite with fiber positioned on the tension side has the highest flexural strength, at 213.11 MPa, while placement on the compression side has the lowest value of 179.98 MPa. It was concluded that the position of non-dental E-glass fiber affects the flexural strength of Fiber Reinforced Composite.

Abstract

Anxiety is a psychological response often experienced by university students when facing exams, which can affect academic performance. Various factors, such as the exam situation, personal experiences, and physical conditions, can worsen anxiety levels. One intervention that is believed to help reduce anxiety is classical music therapy. This study aims to examine the effect of classical music on the anxiety among students at the Faculty of Dentistry. A pre-experimental study was conducted with 165 students from the 2024 cohort of the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Trisakti. The research participants completed the ZSAS questionnaire before and after receiving the classical music intervention. The results showed that he Wilcoxon test yielded p=0.000 (p 0.001), indicating a statistically significant difference between scores before and after the classical music intervention, based on the ZSAS questionnaire. The limitation of this study lies in its participants, who were restricted to a single cohort of students, and in the study design. It can be concluded that classical music has the potential to reduce students anxiety levels.

Abstract

The wound healing process consists of four main phases: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. The proliferative stage in wound healing is characterized by the formation of new tissue and the presence of fibroblast cells that migrate to the wound area to close it. Vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) chitosan is known as a material that is non-toxic and has biocompatibility, biodegradation ability, polyelectrolyte properties, and has been shown to have antimicrobial and accelerated wound healing. The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of Vaname shrimp chitosan gel on wound healing by examining the histological changes on the 14th day. This study was a laboratory experimental study on rats. Fifteen rats were divided into three groups: K+, K-, and KP. Wound surface areas were applied with chitosan from Vaname, commercial chitosan gel, and distilled water gel. Vaname shrimp chitosan gel was applied topically on wound surfaces in the treatment group twice a day and in the control group with distilled water gel. Fourteen days after treatment, all wounds were observed for their healing progress histologically, and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining was used. The results showed that the number of fibroblast cells in the Vaname shrimp chitosan group showed a significant difference between the control group, which had an average of 100.3, the negative control had an average of 110.2, and the Vaname group had an average of 90.2. The study can be concluded that there is an effect of -Kitosan from Vaname shrimp on wound healing (p=0.000).
