Abstract

Joged Pingit is a sacred dance categorized as tari wali, performed exclusively at Pura Taman Limut in Desa Pakraman Pengosekan, Ubud. The dance is deeply connected to the spiritual legacy of Dang Hyang Nirartha and Ida Pedanda Sakti Magelung, who bequeathed the sacred gelungan (headdress) as a medium of divine presence. This study examines the theological meaning of Joged Pingit through the framework of Hindu theology, specifically the dimensions of tattwa (philosophical understanding), susila (ethical values), and acara (ritual practices). Using a qualitative method with observation, interviews, and descriptive-analytical interpretation, the study reveals three core theological meanings: (1) the cosmological meaning, representing the harmony between the macrocosm and microcosm through symbolic movements and ritual space; (2) the soteriological meaning, in which the dance acts as moksa karma—a path of liberation through selfless offering; and (3) the ethical-spiritual meaning, teaching self-control, purity of mind, devotion, and reverence toward divine and ancestral energies. Thus, Joged Pingit functions not only as a sacred performance but also as a medium for spiritual cultivation and the preservation of cosmic balance in Balinese Hindu society.

Abstract

The Jerusalem Wall, as one of the most iconic and sacred sites in the world, not only has historical and archaeological value, but also plays an important role in modern social and political dynamics. This article explores how the Jerusalem Wall reflects a rich civilization, including its influence on the cultural and religious identities of various communities. Through historical analysis, it reveals the long journey of these walls from ancient times to the present day, as well as how their changes reflect social and political changes in the region. The tensions surrounding these walls not only reflect religious and cultural differences, but also mirror the struggles of nationalism and political aspirations. With an interdisciplinary approach, this study invites readers to understand the complexity of the Jerusalem wall as a focal point of conflict, as well as a symbol of peace desired by many parties. Through this research, it is hoped that new perspectives will be found in understanding the relationship between cultural heritage, collective identity, and the dynamics of conflict in Jerusalem. Thus, the walls of Jerusalem are not merely physical structures, but also representations of the challenges and hopes faced by communities in this historically rich region.

Abstract

This research analyzes the Matitisuara Tradition performed during the Ngusaba Kedasa ceremony at Ulun Danu Batur Temple, Batur Traditional Village, Kintamani, Bangli. The primary focus is to examine the lingual forms of the Balinese language within the tradition, its role in the community, and its implications for the mindset of local residents. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with key informants such as Dané Jero Penyarikan and traditional leaders, and document studies of the Raja Purana of Ulun Danu Batur Temple. Data analysis was conducted inductively, involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on structuralism, sociolinguistics, and functionalism theories. The results indicate that from a microlinguistic perspective, the Matitisuara tradition preserves the unique characteristics of the Batur dialect, such as the distinct pronunciation of the vowel phoneme /a/ at the end of words. Macrolinguistically, this tradition functions as a spiritual communication medium containing essential wisdom (piteket) for the community's social and economic life. There are three main verses of wisdom emphasizing the importance of hard work (daak), persistence in endeavors even when starting small, and the wise use of funds for social and religious investment. The implications of this tradition are profound, as Matitisuara serves as an ethical foundation and motivation for various professions, including teachers, farmers, and undagi (traditional builders), in performing their duties with dedication and devotion. In conclusion, the Matitisuara Tradition is not merely a religious ritual but a vital instrument for internalizing noble values and strengthening cultural identity, maintaining harmony within the Batur Village community.

Abstract

Hindu religious education plays a strategic role in preserving the spiritual, moral, and cultural values of the Hindu community amid the dynamics of globalization and modernization. One traditional educational system that plays a significant role in shaping Hindu religious leaders is the aguron-guron system, a parampara-based educational model that emphasizes a deep spiritual and ethical relationship between the teacher (nabe) and the disciple (nanak). However, contemporary developments demand adaptation and synergy between the aguron-guron system and formal as well as non-formal education systems in order to remain relevant and effective. This study aims to examine the traditional aguron-guron education system, the formal and non-formal education systems for sulinggih and prospective sulinggih, and the forms of synergy among these systems in responding to the challenges of the new millennium. The research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, drawing upon Hindu religious texts, educational literature, and scholarly studies related to priesthood education. The findings indicate that the aguron-guron system plays a crucial role in shaping the spiritual and moral character of prospective sulinggih, while formal education provides an academic foundation and critical thinking skills, and non-formal education strengthens practical competencies in the performance of religious rituals. The synergy among these three educational systems results in an ideal educational model capable of producing sulinggih who possess spiritual depth, broad scholarly insight, and contextual abilities to address the challenges faced by the Hindu community in contemporary society. Therefore, the integration of the aguron-guron system with formal and non-formal education is a strategic necessity for the sustainable development of Hindu religious education.

Abstract

The Meboros Kidang Tradition is one of the religious oral traditions that is still preserved and carried out by the people of Busungbiu Village, Buleleng Regency, as an integral part of the Pujawali ceremony series at the Village Temple. This tradition is rooted in the history of the establishment of the Puseh Temple in Busungbiu Village and is passed down from generation to generation as a form of respect for ancestors and a manifestation of devotion to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. This study aims to describe the process of implementing the Meboros Kidang Tradition, examine the values contained therein, and explain the social and religious functions of the tradition for its supporting community. The study uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods in the form of interviews and documentation studies, and is analyzed using structural functionalism theory. The results of the study indicate that the Meboros Kidang Tradition has sacred ritual stages, starting from the village paruman, the ngajit ceremony, to the kidang hunting procession which is carried out with strict customary rules. This tradition contains religious, ethical, magical, and belief values that function as a means of purification in both the secular and spiritual realms. Furthermore, the Meboros Kidang Tradition serves to strengthen social solidarity, foster a spirit of mutual cooperation, and strengthen relationships among village communities through the practice of ngayah. Thus, the Meboros Kidang Tradition serves not only as a local cultural heritage but also as a medium for educating religious and social values relevant to the lives of Balinese Hindus.

Abstract

The complexity of the encounter between Saivism and Buddhism in the Nusantara archipelago is often perceived as a simple phenomenon, whereas it possesses profound theological depth within specific literary texts. This study aims to analyze the theological conception of Siwa-Buddha in the Kakawin Nilacandra. The method employed is qualitative, utilizing a textual study or philological approach through content analysis of the stanzas in the Kakawin Nilacandra. The findings reveal that this text presents a unique perspective on the theological collaboration between Siva and Buddha within cosmology. Divine figures from both traditions are considered essentially equivalent, such as the identification of Hyang Iswara with Amoghasiddhi and Mahadewa with Amitabha. Furthermore, it can be argued that the Siva-Buddha teaching constitutes a well-established and enduring doctrine, as it perceives God’s immanent presence within both natural elements and the human body. Consequently, this doctrine serves as a philosophical foundation for religious harmony that remains relevant to the present day.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of Spiritual Motivation and Search for Meaning in Life on Tourist Inner Satisfaction within the framework of Slow Tourism in East Java. Responding to the crisis of modern spirituality, slow tourism emerges as an antithesis to mass tourism, offering a theological contemplation space. This study applies a Mixed Method with a Sequential Explanatory strategy. Quantitative data were collected from 200 respondents at spiritual sites in East Java using a 1-7 Likert scale questionnaire, followed by qualitative deepening through interviews. Regression analysis and data triangulation confirmed that Spiritual Motivation and Search for Meaning in Life have a positive and significant effect on Inner Satisfaction. These findings validate the theological perspective that tourism is not merely physical mobility, but an existential pilgrimage towards transcendence that presents the highest inner satisfaction (Ananda). The implications recommend integrating sacred values in destination management to facilitate the soul recovery of tourists suffering from alienation due to modernity.

Abstract

This study is positioned within the discipline of Hindu studies, with particular emphasis on the cosmology of time and the temporal organization of ritual practice in the Balinese Hindu tradition. It aims to explain the meaning of the restriction that the Kuningan holy day ritual must be completed before midday by situating it within the cosmological framework of the Sun’s movement. The problem arises from the fact that this prescription is generally understood as a normative rule based on the Sundarigama manuscript, without being thoroughly elaborated through a Hindu astronomical-theological framework. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research, applying Vedic hermeneutics to interpret the Sundarigama text and to relate it to the concepts of Jyotiṣa and the daily analogy of Dakṣiṇāyana-Uttarāyaṇa. The findings indicate that the period from midnight to midday can be analogized as a daily phase of Dakṣiṇāyana, a “descending” cosmic current that enables the presence of the Dewatas and Pitara in the human world. Conversely, the period from midday to midnight is analogized as a daily phase of Uttarāyaṇa, a cosmic current moving back toward the divine realm. For this reason, the Kuningan ritual must be completed before midday, since after that moment the cosmic flow is understood to be returning to svarga. This analysis confirms that the temporal restriction of Kuningan constitutes a consistent expression of Hindu cosmology of time, in which the movement of the Sun is conceived as a dynamic structure mediating the relationship between the human world and the divine realm.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the concept of sarira samskara in ancient Hindu teachings and its implementation in the manusa yadnya ceremony in Bali, while analyzing its role in the process of transformation of the human body and soul. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, through a review of relevant holy scriptures, palm-leaf manuscripts, books, and scientific journals. The results of the study indicate that sarira samskara is a series of purification ceremonies that accompany the journey of human life from the conception phase (garbhadana) to marriage (wiwaha). In the Balinese context, this concept is embodied in various forms of manusa yadnya such as magedong-gedongan, nyambutin, otonan, metatah, pawintenan, mejaya-jaya, and pawiwahan. Each stage of the ceremony functions not only as a symbolic ritual, but also as a medium of spiritual education that transforms the physical aspect through bodily purification, and the spiritual aspect through the instillation of dharmic values, mantras, prayers, and character building. Thus, sarira samskara (manusa yadnya) can be understood as a holistic development system that guides humans towards awareness of the essence of the self as atman, a divine spark that is in the process of moving towards the ultimate goal of life, namely moksa.

Abstract

Tumpek Wariga is one of Bali’s local wisdom traditions that is traditionally practiced through religious rituals by the Hindu community. This ceremony emphasizes the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and God, particularly in the context of preserving vegetation and local ecosystems. This study employs a qualitative approach using ethnographic methods, including participant observation and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, priests, and community members involved in the ritual practices in Bali. The analysis is conducted through symbolic, ecological, and ritual performance frameworks to understand the ecological meanings embedded in the Tumpek Wariga practice. The findings reveal that this ceremony functions not only as a religious manifestation but also as a mechanism for cultural and environmental conservation. Tumpek Wariga encourages sustainable plant maintenance, local ecosystem management, and the intergenerational transmission of ecological values. Therefore, this ritual represents a concrete manifestation of Bali’s local genius, integrating religious, ecological, and social aspects in cultural and environmental preservation. These findings contribute significantly to the understanding of local wisdom as an adaptive strategy in responding to the dynamics of globalization, as well as to the recognition of intangible cultural heritage with high ecological value.
