Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the teacher’s strategies in teaching writing recount text and describe how the strategies applied in teaching writing recount text at SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. It used qualitative research design. The subject of this research was one of the English teacher in SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. The data of this research were the teacher’s strategies and the activities in teaching writing recount text. The results showed that the teacher applied four strategies from seven strategies by Haynes and Zacarian, they were (1) making lesson visual, (2) modifying vocabulary instruction, (3) using cooperative learning strategy and (4) determining key concepts. Those are the ways how teacher applying the strategies: First, in observing he applied lesson visual strategy. The second, in questioning he modified vocabulary instruction. Third, in experimenting he applied cooperative learning strategy. Finally, he applied determining key concept strategy in associating and communicating stages.Key words: Teaching Writing, Teacher’s Strategies, Recount Text, Qualitative Research.

Abstract

This study concern on how reading text materials are developed for fashion design vocational school. The objectives of this research were: (1) to design English reading material for students in Fashion Design Program, (2) to develop English reading material for students in Fashion Design Program. This study was conducted by using developmental research (R & D). The subject of the research was grade twelve in SMK N 10 Medan consisting of 33 students. Instrumentation for collecting data was document, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ need learning English based on their program in school. Based on the students’ need analysis, it was got some reading materials from the students’ book are not appropriate with the syllabus. Then, there is reading material that should develop based on their syllabus and their need. After the materials had been designed, the reading materials were done. The results show of the 84.1% from the Expert – lecturer and 92.1% from the Expert – English teacher, for the new reading material and the categorized is “relevant” as the reading material criteria. The developed teaching materials were related to the vocation that the students had; it was fashion design program. The development of materials followed six stages; those were gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new reading material, validating expert, revising new reading material from experts’ suggestion and developing reading material (final product). Keywords: Develop, Reading Text Materials, Fashion Design, Vocational School, Developmental Research

Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe how the students perceive theirengagement in small group discussions and to explain the factors that influencethe students engagement in small group discussions. A descriptive qualitativedesign was used in this study. The source of data was 25 students of Grade VIIISMP Al-Wasliyah 8 Medan. The data were analyzed by using descriptivequalitative. The results showed that (1) The students perceive their engagement insmall group discussion positively. Most of the students agreed that being engagedin small group discussion was useful for them as EFL students and agreed thatthey have followed all activities in small group discussion and given their besteffort. The students agreed that they could participate well in small groupdiscussion, and felt motivated to engage themselves. The students felt that theywere confident enough to deliver their opinions in group discussion. Besides, allof the students satisfied with their engagement in small group discussion. (2) Thefactors that influence the students in engaging in small group discussion were thestudents’ relationship with teachers, relationship with peers and classmates,students’ self-efficacy, students’ self-regulated learning, and students’ interest inlearning.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out whether students pay more attention to picture, get information from picture and understanding the content of the text. It was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research. The source of the data was taken from the textbook entitled English in Focus published by Nur Ilmu, Yudhistira and students’ grade VIII of SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. There are 9 classes of grade VIII which consists of 325 students, and VIII-1 was taken as the sample of this research. The data of this study were obtained from the students’ score of reading test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the competence in predicting information through picture is very good. From 38 sample students, there were 21 students (55,3%) got very good score or can predict more than 5 details of information from the text, 15 students (39.5%) got good score or can predict less than 5 details of information from the text and only 2 students (5.2%) got bad score or predict less than 2 information. As well as their reading comprehension of the text with mean score 82.37 which is higher than the Minimal Completeness Criteria (KKM) of reading applied by SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. It can be concluded that The result of this research is appropriate to the theory which claim that pictures are useful for getting students to predict what is coming next in a lesson and help the students comprehend the text easily. Keywords: Predicting Information, Picture, Reading Text

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate teacher’s strategies in teaching writing recount text at SMP GAJAH MADA MEDAN and to discover the reasons on why teacher implemented that teaching strategies the way he did in an online class. The method of this research was qualitative research. The technique of data collection in this research were observation and interview. The research finding showed that the teacher applied two strategies in teahing writing namely Shared Writing Strategy and Guided Wring Strategy. According to the teacher, the reasons for using Shared Writing Strategy and Guided Writing Strategy are these strategies are suitable and effective to overcome students difficulties in writing especially in an online class that more complicated than face to face learning. Both of these strategies also made the students easily to understand the lesson and become more independent to write their own recount text.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to reveal introvert learners' target needs and learningneeds in English speaking activities. This study was conducted at SMP-IT HikmatulFadhillah, which the sample was twenty introvert learners at grade IX that had beenselected by doing a personality test, which using Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ). The research method was qualitative descriptive. The data was collected bydistributing the questionnaire and interviewing ten representative introvert learnersand English-speaking teacher. The item questions were adapted from English forSpecific Purposes – A learning Centred Approach by Hutchinson & Waters (1987)and Curriculum Development in Language Teaching by Jack Richards (2001).Theresults revealed that introvert learners need to learn English because they wanted toget a good career in the future, and introvert learners wanted to be able to speakEnglish with their friends at school every day, and so that it can be used as their dailycommunication. As long as they study in their class, the most common problems theyfaced were pronunciation, grammar, and difficulty participating in discussions.Therefore, introvert learners were very interested in learning more aboutpronunciation. Introvert learners need a quiet atmosphere, and they like to study aloneor in pairs. Introvert learners learned easier by listening to something, such aslistening to English songs or podcasts, even in class they were easier to understand bylistening to the teacher's explanation. With these conditions, introverted learners needteachers who can make them more active in class but still comfortable for them.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop suitable procedure text materials for reading skill, for Beauty program students. It was found that procedure text materials provided in the students’ textbook were not suitable to the needs and interests of Beauty program students. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data, developing procedure text materials, validating procedure text materials, revising procedure text materials and final product. There are some instruments that were applied in this research namely questionnaire and interview .The subject of this study was XI Grade of Beauty program. Based on the needs analysis conducted there were 4 procedure texts related to Beauty program developed. The researcher developed the text by selecting and adapting relevant procedure texts related to Beauty program from internet and book as the sources. Then, the selected texts were adapted based on the principles of materials development in order to present well organized suitable procedure text materials. These developed procedure text materials had been validated by two experts and the average score gotten is 4.07. It is categorized “Good” since the mean is within the interval 3.40 < ≤ 4.19. It means that the developed procedure text materials for reading skill are suitable for the eleventh grade students of Beauty program. Key words: research and development (R&D), procedure text, Beauty program

Abstract

This study attemps to imorove the students’ achivement in reading comprehension through inquiry technique. The study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subjects of the research were the 45 students of Grade XI SMA Negeri 1 Bahorok. It was conducted in two Cycles and consisted of six meetings.The instruments for colecting data used Reading Comprehension tests for quantitative data and Diary Notes, Interview Sheet, and Observation Sheet for qualitative data. Based on the Reading Comprehension score, students score in pre test, kept improving in every test. Based on Diary Notes, Observation sheet and Interview Sheet, it was found that the students were actualy involved in reading process. The results of the reasearch showed that Inquiry Technique can improve the students’ achivement in Reading Comprehension. In orientation test the mean of the students’ score was 53, the mean of the students’ score in Cycle I was 62.07, and the mean of the students’ score in Cycle II was 71.6. Based on the Observation Sheet, Diary Notes, and Interview Sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process run well. The conclusion is that Inquiry Technique improved the students’ reading Coprehension and it is suggested to the English teacher to apply Inquiry Technique in Reading Comprehension. Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop learning media for writing analytical exposition text by using Adobe Flash Professional CS5 for the eleventh students of SMA Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by the experts, revising and final products. The subject of the study was grade XI of SMA Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need a learning media in teaching writing which can help the students to understand about the analytical exposition text. The learning media of Adobe Flash Prrofessional CS5 was validated by experts. The average score is 4.62. It means the developed learning media by using Adobe Flash Professional CS5 is relevant or appropriate and categorized as a very good learning media for students at SMA Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa.  Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Adobe Flash Professional CS5, Analytical Exposition Text

Abstract

This study focuces on analyzing the process of classroom interaction through Flanders Interaction Analysis Category (FIAC) model. The objective was to describe how the teacher and students use the categories of classroom interaction in English class by using Flanders Interaction Analysis Category (FIAC) model. The data was found based on the data transcription. The source of the data was the utterances between English teacher and 7th grade students at SMP N 1 SEIBAMBAN. The instruments for data collection were observation, video recording, and note talking. The data analysis applied descriptive qualitative research. It was found that the total percentage each categories classroom interaction were accepts feelings (0.57%), praise and encourages (1.34%), accepts or uses the ideas of the students (0.19%), asks questions (13.74%), lecturing (7.06%), giving directions (30.9%), criticizing or justifying authority (3.91%), students talk-response (28.81%), students talk-initiation (0.29%), and silence or confusion (13.17%). It showed that students participated in the interaction process. Keywords: Teacher Talk, Students Talk, Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC) model.
