Abstract

This study focused on the readability of reading materials in English textbook for grade XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Beringin. This study attempted to find out the English reading materials appropriateness in terms of the readability level for the target students. This study was categorized as descriptive quantitative research. The source of the data were the reading materials from English in Professional Job Situations textbook published by Grafindo Media Pratama which was designed under guidance of Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendisdikan (KTSP). The Dale and Chall original formula was used to analyze the data from the textbook. The findings of the study showed that most of the reading materials in English in Professional Job Situations textbook were only appropriate for the 13-15th grade (college) and were considered too hard for the eleventh grade students.Keywords: Readability, The Dale and Chall Original Formula, Readability Formula, English Textbooks for Eleventh Grade Students.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at investigating the effect of applying Brainstorming Technique on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. The population of this study was  the Grade 8 students of of SMP Negeri 3 Aek Kuo, Labuhan Batu Utara. There were 8 classes which contained around 240 students. 2 classes out of eight classes were randomly taken as the sample of the research. The sample was divided into two groups. The first group (30 students) as the experimental group, while the rest (30 students) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Brainstorming Technique., and the Control Group was taught by using Conventional Technique. The instrument for collecting the data was essay test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer used the inter-rater formula. The result of the study showed that the reliability of the test was 0.55. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students of the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level significance 0.5 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 the  is 4,650. while the  is 1,671.  Therefore, the hypothesis  is accepted. It means that that Brainstorming Technique significantly affects the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.   Key words: Brainstorming, Writing, Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

This study aims to find strategies on teaching English Speaking which are suitable to the needs of students of Senior High School. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative research through three phases; observation, interviewing and documentation. It was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Badar, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and observation to 20 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and observation results prove that the teaching strategy is not implemented well and need to be improved. The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the implementation of teaching strategy in conducting speaking skill as suitable or approriate for grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Badar. Key words: Descriptive Qualitative Reseach, Speaking Skill, Curriculum 2013.

Abstract

This study was focused on the improvement of Grade VIII students’ writing achievement in descriptive text by using application of STAD Technique. The objective of  this study was to find out whether STAD Technique could improve Grade VIII students’ writing achievement in descriptive text. The study conducted by using Class Room Action Research ( CAR ). The subjects of this study were students of Grade VIII Class 2 of State Junior High School ( Sekolah Menengah Pertama) SMP PAB 10 Medan consisting of 23 students. The study was implemented in two cycle and each cycle consisted of three meeting. The instruments of data collection consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from students written test and the qualitative were taken from the  interview, diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire. Based on the descriptive writing result, students score in the test of cycle I, the mean score was  68,4 and it the test of Cycle II was 76,9. Based on the observation sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process well done. The students were active and curious in writing. In line with the data, it found that STAD ( Students Team Achievement Divisions) technique can improve Grade VIII  students’ writing achievement in descriptive text. Abstract

This research was aimed to analyze errors made by students in translating Indonesian text to English using the classification made by Gentzler. The subject of this research was students who took Translation subject in 2018/2019 academic year in English Education study program in State University of Medan. The instrument of collecting data was a translation test from Indonesian to English consisting of three genres: narrative, descriptive, and analytical exposition. 30 students were divided into 3 groups of 10, each translating different genres. The errors in translations were classified into five types of errors as classified by Gentzler. The result showed that inversion, omission, addition, deviation, and modification errors were found in students’ translations. Deviation and modification errors formed 90% of all errors combined. The errors were caused by interlingual and intralingual interference. They were collocational errors, choosing inappropriate meaning when looking up the dictionary, word per word translation, and overgeneralization. Key words: Translation, Errors in Translation, English Education Study Program

Abstract

This study aimed at describing how the teachers teach reading comprehension of analytical exposition text to the eleventh grade students of SMA in Medan and revealing the underlying reasons of why they do that way. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers who taught at the eleventh grade students of two SMA in Medan they were: SMA Negeri 4 and SMA Negeri 12 in academic year 2016/2017. The data were the recorded utterances of the teachers and the students during the teaching reading process and the transcript of the interview which were collected by observing, tape recording, and interviewing and analysed by using Miles and Huberman technique. The findings of the study showed most of the teachers’ ways did not focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing on teaching the knowledge of genre because they did not provide the use of text structure knowledge which is considered as a help to enhance comprehension. All the underlying reasons of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension of analytical exposition text did not facilitate comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension. Key words: teaching, reading comprehension, analytical exposition text

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) To investigate and explain the types of racial oppressionoccurred in the movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, and 2) To describe how the charactersresisted the racial discrimination aimed to them in the movie The Autobiography of Miss JanePittman. The data are analyzed in descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this research werefrom the utterance of The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman movie characters. The data were takenfrom all the utterances, including monologues, dialogues, and narrations from the script which isalready transcripted from the movie. The result of this research showed that 1) there are four types ofoppressions that happened in the movie, namely: Exploitation with a total number of 2 utterances(6.7%), Marginalization with a total number of 10 utterances (33.3%), Powerlessness with a totalnumber of 6 utterances (20%), and violence with a total number of 12 utterances (40%). 2) There arethree types of resistance that are used by the characters, namely: Acquiescence with a total number of5 utterances (31.25%), violence resistance with a total number of 4 utterances (25%), Non-ViolenceResistance with a total number of 7 utterances (43.75%),

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop Word Walls as media for teaching writing descriptive text at the seventh grade students of MTs S Nurul Hakim Tembung. The researcher used Research and Development (R & D) method through six steps: gathering data and information, need analysis, media design, validating to experts, revising, and final product. The subjects of this research were 26 students from VII A at MTs S Nurul Hakim Tembung. The instrument of collecting data was using questionnaires and interviewing the teacher. The data were analyzed by descriptive text technique. The product was assessed from two experts. The average scores of the product assessment were 90 from English teacher, and 92 from English lecturer. The total average scores from two experts were 91 which was in very good quality. It means that the developed product/Word Walls is eligible to be used for teaching writing descriptive text for the seventh grades students at MTs S Nurul Hakim Tembung.  Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), writing descriptive text, word walls.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze and describe the lexical density and readability in English for Junior High School VIII textbook. It was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The textbook was published by Mediatama. It is used for the eighth grade of students in junior high school. The researcher used seven reading texts as the data. The lexical density was tested by using Ure’s formula and the readability was tested by using Flesch Reading Ease Formula. The result showed that the lexical density of the reading texts in English for Junior High School VIII textbook is above 40% which indicates that it has high lexical density. Lexical items (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) play important role to influence the density of a text. The more lexical items in a text, the higher lexical density percentage will be and it also affects the readability of the reading texts. Then, the result also showed that the average readability score is 66 which falls into standard level. It indicates that the reading texts are readable for 8th grade students of junior high school but they still need teacher’s assistance to comprehend the texts. Keywords: Lexical Density, Readability, Flesch Reading Ease Formula.

Abstract

This study concerns with improving grade VIII students’ achievement in writing procedural Paragraph through demonstration method. This research was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of SMP N 2 Babalan which consisted of 35 students. The instruments for collecting data were primary data (writing test) and secondary data (interview sheet, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on writing scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the test I the mean was 64,91, in the test II the mean was 74,57 . Based on interview, observation, and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, creative to give their idea, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. The finding of the research showed that applying demonstration method significantly improved students’ writing achievement.
