Abstract

This study aimed at describing translation used and reason in teaching writing procedure text at SMA YPK Medan. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken 3 English teachers of SMA YPK Medan. The data were collected by using an interview and observing the whole process of teaching writing procedure text. The findings of this study showed that there were 59 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking the meaning of words or sentences, explaining the grammar and classroom management. It was also found that translation used in the scientific approach activity that experimenting, associating and communicating activity in teaching. The reason of using translation in teaching writing procedure text were facilitating communication, teacher-student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching writing skills.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether the English reading texts are appropriate or not in terms of the readability level for the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai. This study focuses on the readability level of English reading texts for grade X students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai majoring in Banking class in the academic year 2015/2016. This study is categorized as descriptive quantitative research. The data of the study was seven reading texts from an English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris published by Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan in 2014 with various length and genres as the source of data tested to 30 students as the research sample. The instruments of the research were Flesch-Kincaid Grade level and Cloze Procedure Test. For the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Formula, the researcher counts the words, syllables, sentences, the average number of words per sentence and the average number of syllables per words of the reading text to determine the level of readability of the English texts in students’ textbook. The cloze test was used to assess the difficulty in terms of a reader’s understanding and response to the structure of the language of a text. The results of the study show that based on the cloze test result, the researcher gets the average score of 7 reading texts is 57.39% and based on the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Formula the average score is 6 so it can be concluded that reading texts of Bahasa Inggris published by Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan in 2014 are in the Independent level because the reading texts are readable and understandable to the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai, and the texts are predicted to be quite easy. Therefore, the researcher takes a conclusion that this textbook is not appropriate to be used by the students at the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai because they can read them by their own. Keywords : Readability, English Textbook, Students of SMK Negeri 1 Binjai.

Abstract

The goals of this research are to describe students’ responses to teacher written corrective feedback in their descriptive texts and to discover types of written corrective feedback used by the teacher. Descriptive qualitative was used as the research methodology. The subjects of the study are a seventh year class of SMP Negeri 1 Tanjung Beringin consisting of 16 students and an English teacher. Open-ended interview and documentation review as the research instruments to collect the data. Result of the study revealed that (1) The students showed positive responses to teacher’s written corrective feedback. (a) They said that teacher written corrective feedback is a good thing to do. (b) They felt pleased when their descriptive texts being given teacher’s wtitten corrective feedback. (c) teacher’s written corrective feedback could make them motivated in writing. (d) They hoped the teacher always had provided their writing errors with written corrective feedback. (d) direct written corrective feedback being the most prefered teacher’s feedback by the students. and (2) From three types of written corrective feedback (metalinguistic, direct and indirect), teacher only used two of them, namely direct and indirect written corrective feedback in the students’ descriptive texts.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find the readability level of reading texts in BahasaInggris textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture for the eleventhgrade of Senior High School of 2017 revised edition. This study is categorized as amixed method reseach which used the embedded design. It means that combines bothof qualitative and quantitative approach in one study. The data were collected byusing document analysis Flesch Reading Ease formula and Flesch Reading EaseScore were used as the instruments of this study to measure the readability level ofreading texts in Bahasa Inggris textbook of 2017 revised edition textbook. The resultof Flesch Reading Ease formula calculation was one text is in the Easy level; tworeading texts are in the Fairly Easy level; one text is in the Standard level; four textsare in Fairly Difficult level; and two reading texts are in the Difficult level. Thefindings of this study showed that from ten reading texts in Bahasa Inggris textbookof 2017 revised edition only four reading texts were readable for the eleventh gradestudents of Senior High School. They were which in Fairly Difficult level with scoreranged from fifty to sixty.

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing through Spider Map Technique. The subject of this research was the class IX of SMP N 1 Ranto Baek. The number of the students in this class was 30 students and was conducted in two cycles. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative (writing test) and qualitative data (diary notes, interview). Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that there is a difference of the students’ achievement in cycle I and cycle II. In the Pre-test the mean of the students’ score was 57.2, in the Post-test I the mean of the students’ score was 69.8, and in the Post-test II the mean of the student’s score was 81.8. Based on the diary notes and interview, it showed that the expression and excitement of the students were also improved. It was found that teaching writing anecdote by using Spider Map Technique could improve. It is suggested that English teachers apply this Spider Map Technique as one of the alternatives in teaching writing anecdote.  Keywords       : writing, anecdote, Spider Map

Abstract

This study aims to (1) investigate how the workbook for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan, (2) know relevant workbook needed for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan, (3) develop a students’ workbook for speaking skill based on Inquiry-based Learning for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Gall, Gall and Borg (2003). The research subject was English teacher and students for grade seven of SMP Swasta Islam Terpadu Hikmatul Fadhillah Medan. The instrument used was teacher’s interview and students’ questionnaire. The workbook was validated by validators that consist of material expert and English teacher practitioner by using questionnaires validation sheets. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the existing workbook does not support students to do work actively, (2) relevant workbook that is needed by students is workbook based on inquiry-based learning, and (3) the developed inquiry-based learning workbook has been valid with a percentage of 95.55 % from English lecturer and 97.03% from the English teacher and this workbook is appropriate with students’ needs for speaking skills.                                                                                                 Key words: Inquiry-based Learning, Speaking, Students’ Workbook.

Abstract

This research deals with the effect of problem based learning on students’ recount text writing achievement. The population of this research was the students of  VIII SMP of SMP Negeri 18 Medan in Academic Year 2015 / 2016. This research was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using problem based learning strategy and the control group was taught without using problem based learning. The researcher collected the data by giving essay test in the written test form. In order to know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater formula. The result of the reliability was 0, 93. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the mean scores of the students in the experimental group was significantly higher than the mean scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant α= 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 70 with tobserved value 7,327 > ttable value 1,994. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The finding indicated that problem based learning  significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing recount text. Key words: Problem Based Learning, Recount Text, Writing Achievement

Abstract

This study described politeness strategies used by the English teachers one of secondary school in Medan. The source of the data was two English teachers of class VIII and IX in one of the junior high school in Medan, Indonesia. This study was analyzed politeness strategies in the teaching learning process according Brown and Levinsons’ (1987). The data collection technique was video recording and interviewing.The findings were (1) there were four politeness strategies; Bald on Record 137 (47,08%), Positive Politeness 89 (30,58%), Negative Politeness 48 (16,49%), and Off Record 17 (5,84%). (2) Bald on Record was realized to make the close relationship between teachers and students. Positive Politeness strategies were realized to give respect to students. Negative Politeness was realized to maintain closer friends among them and Off Record was realized to give the students the opportunity to care for the teacher said.This study was referred Politeness, it is influenced by Power, Distance, and Relationship, and affected by speech events and politeness is the use of the right word in the power context, it is determined by the rules that are prevalent in society. The result was constributed teachers, linguists, other researcher sociolingustics lecturers and government that impicated with directly or indirectly involved to online learning as the classroom and the teaching learning process at school are suggested to apply this politeness strategies which put impact students’ attitude and behavior and to elaborated of politeness, politeness strategies, the reason of politeness strategies, E-Learning and Teacher and students communication.

Abstract

Reading is the basic in learning every subject. The more understanding the text, the more information students can gain. However, the reading materials that the students use is not appropriate based on syllabus. Therefore, the reading materials should be developed to fulfil the syllabus and the students' needs also. Because English is included Content Area Reading, so the development of reading materials is based on content area which focus on strengthen the vocabularies, specifically the unfamiliar ones, by giving glossary and related pictures. The developed text is only focus in the first semester which is descriptive and recount text. The research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Medan. The data was taken from interviewing the English teacher and distributing questionnaires for 30 students in grade VIII-4. The data showed that students need materials which is related to their environment and constructed by familiar vocabularies. Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestion are directed to the English teacher who is teaching in that school to provide reading materials based on syllabus and students' needs regularly. Keywords: Developing, Reading Materials, Content Area

Abstract

This research deals with speech functions used by teacher and students during reading comprehension session in English Vocational classroom interaction. The objective of this study were (1) to investigate the types of speech function that are used by teacher in English classroom interaction (2) To describe how the speech functions are realized in Mood in English classroom interaction. A descriptive qualitative design was used in the study. The data were collected by recording the utterances of the teacher at SMPN 1 Hinai. The subjects of the study were teacher and students in SMPN 1 Hinai. The data collected by recording the teacher and students utterances in classroom interaction. There were 45 utterances produced of the teacher. The types of speech function that have been found the teacher in the classroomare statement, question, offer and command. Which are question and statement more often used by teacher in classroom interaction.For realization of speech function of teacher and students.there is way that have been found in realization of speech functions of teacher and students, namely, typical utterances mood (congruent). In typical utterances mood, there are four ways that have been found, namely statement realized in declarative mood, offer realized by declarative, then command realized in imperative mood, question realized in interrogative.
