Abstract

This research was aimed to develop English speaking materials for the students of Accounting program at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang especially the tenth grade. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through four phases; Evaluation and Need Analysis, Material Development, Material Validation and Revision and Final Product. It was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang. The date were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 10 students to get the student’s needs. The result of questionnaire showed that the relevance of existing Speaking material with Accounting major just 35 % (less relevant) and 90 % of  the students need the relevance English speaking material with their major and related to work situation. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English Speaking materials which contain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the syllabus, student’s level and major. The material developed into 3 units based on the basic competence on syllabus; Congratulating and Complimenting, Expressing Intention, and Giving Announcement. The product of English speaking material validated by two experts, lecturer and English teacher. The result of experts’ judgment is 89.5 and it belongs to good category. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used for students of Accounting program especially in SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang.Keywords: Research and Development(R & D), English Speaking materials, Accounting Program

Abstract

The aim of this study was to developed animation video as media in teaching writing narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this study, the procedured were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis designing the first draft of media, revising the media and producing the final product as the animation video. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaires to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaires result prove that the students need animation video as a media in teaching writing which can help the students to understand about the narrative text. The new animation video consists of some pictures, characters and explanations that can be used in teaching writing narrative text. The media had been validated by two validators. The first validator gave 89.6% and the second validator gave 95.2% that it could be inferred that the developed media was appropriate to be used for students. The result of the study was the animation video that the teacher can use as the teaching media of narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam.

Abstract

This research is about teachers strategies in teaching speaking to tenth grade students at SMKN 3 Medan. The aims of this study are (1) to analyze the strategies used by English teachers in teaching speaking to tenth grade students, and (2) to find out the difficulties by teachers in implementing the strategy to tenth grade students. The subject of this study were two English teachers at SMKN 3 Medan. This study used descriptive qualitative research. Research data collection was done by observation, video recording and interviews. The result of this study are, (1) The first teacher applied the strategies in teaching speaking, namely question for understanding, showing and telling, students working together, plenty of practice and flexible time. The second teacher applies showing and telling, plenty of practice, flexible time and students working together. The two English teachers did not apply clear lesson goals, summarizing, providing students with feedback, teach strategies not just content, and nurture metacognition.  It is known that the two English teachers of ten grade students in SMKN 3 Medan have not implemented the ten strategies in teaching speaking process. (2) it was found that both teachers had difficulties in implementing the strategies in teaching speaking. The difficulties faced by the two of teachers are the same, namely inhibition, nothing to say, low in participation and mother   tongue use.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how gender bias is represented in the English textbook for the twelfth-grade students. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study was English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” used in twelfth grade students. The study used content analysis technique. The data were collected from texts and pictures. In total, there were 100 pictures and 269 texts that consisted of gender to be analyzed through six categories of gender bias which are proposed by Porreca in 1984. The findings of the study showed that female and male omission, female was leading by 51% to 49%. Female and male firstness, male was leading by 87% to 13%. Female and male occupational role, male was leading by 59% to 41%. Female and male noun, female was leading by 74% to 26%. The textbook has one kind of masculine generic structure. Female and male adjective, female was leading by 63% to 37%. The findings revealed that gender bias still exists in the textbook. The textbook does not portray a gender- balanced portrayal of male and female. Females are still portrayed as doing more housework like baking, decorating the room, and caring for children. However, based on the number of occupations, males are portrayed as dominant in doing social occupations.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find the types of code switching use by the teachers in providing English classroom instruction and to describe the reasons why the teachers use code switching in English classroom instruction at seventh grade of SMP Negeri 13 Medan. This study was conducted on English teachers of seventh grade at SMP Negeri 13 Medan. Descriptive qualitative research design was used as a research method while in data collection, observation, video recording, and interview were used in this study. The results showed that (1) in English classroom instruction of seventh grade that the teachers use three types of code switching namely 9 utterances in tag switching, 10 utterances with inter-sentential switching, and 43 utterances in intra-sentential switching and (2) teacher’s reasons use code switching in English classroom instruction was triggered by rhetoric reason where the teacher use English and Indonesian as the language classroom, topic of conversation based on the topic that discussed in each of meetings, and the student’s lack of vocabulary in English. Hence, it can be concluded the teachers use code switching in English classroom instruction to reach the student’s knowing and understanding about the learning in English classroom and to create the environment classroom enjoy and motivated.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the ability of tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan in answering reading comprehension question of Higher Order Thinking Skills based on Curriculum 2013 with essay question of Narrative Text legend story. This research was conducted with Quantitative-Descriptive method. The data analysis was a test that consist of 3 analysing level question, 2 evaluating level question and 1 creating level question. Total 6 essay HOTS question with the text was Narrative Text legend story. The test was taken from 30 students of class X-MIPA SMA Swasta Imelda Medan. This research has found that the ability of the tenth-grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan was poor. With the mean of Analysing 49.07; Evaluating 51.25; and Creating 28.3. The number of students who got excellent in analysing were 8 students, evaluating has 10 students and creating only has good category with 2 students. From this research, students should improve their creative and critical thinking. And teachers also need to take more attention to guide the students.

Abstract

The research purpose was to investigate the implementation of TPACK Approach in teaching English at SMP Negeri 17 Medan using descriptive qualitative research methods, and observation and interview data collection techniques. Based on the research, it is known that the first teacher implement TPACK by using mobile phones. Unlike the second teacher, she applies technological knowledge by using digital tools such as laptops, projectors and mobile phones and combining learning materials from various sources such as internet and YouTube. The components above are listed in the lesson plan prepared by the teacher. For the second problem, it was found that both teachers implemented TPACK in this way because it was adjusted to the abilities, school facilities, and also the students' backgrounds. Therefore, based on all the items on the observation check list, there are 14 items applied by the first teacher and 24 items applied by the second teacher.

Abstract

This study is about Teachers’ Learning Media in Teaching Writing of Descriptive Text at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The first aim of this research was to know what kinds of learning media are used by teachers in teaching writing of descriptive text and also to analyze the ways of using learning media in teaching writing of descriptive text. The second aim was to know the reasons using learning media in teaching writing of descriptive text by teachers. The data for this study was taken from the teachers who taught in the eight grade in SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected in 3 ways by observing, recording, and interviewing. The data was analyzed based on Harmer (2002) theory. The teachers used kinds of learning media in teaching writing of descriptive text, they were: picture, the overhead projector, and whiteboard. In some cases, teachers also combined two kinds of learning media. The ways of using the learning media in teaching writing of descriptive text, they were: preparation, presentation, and follow-up. The reasons of using learning media by teachers, they were: availability of learning media by school, students’ condition, and students’ interest in used of learning media in the teaching learning process.

Abstract

The purposes of this study analyzed kind of strategies used by English teachers at SMA St. Thomas 2 Medan in teaching reading comprehension descriptive text, and analyzed how the English teacher used semantic mapping in teaching reading comprehension descriptive text. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The participants of this research were an English teacher of grade 10 at SMA St. Thomas 2 Medan and the students of class X IPS 1 SMA St. Thomas 2 Medan. The data from this research were the results of observations and interviews. The researcher also asked the teacher what strategies the teacher usually uses in teaching reading comprehension, especially in descriptive texts. The teacher replied that she had three different teaching strategies for teaching reading comprehension. The three strategies are: Mind Mapping/Semantic Mapping, Reciprocal Teaching, and Question Answer Relationship (QARs). Based on the results of observations that had been made by researchers, teachers carried out learning activities using teaching strategies properly and there were no obstacles.
