Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the students’ perception by Cake application in speaking skill. This study was conducted at XI grade of SMA Yayasan Dayah Darul Qur’an. The methodology of this study is qualitative descriptive research. The data was collected by distributing the questionnaire and interviews by divided the questionnaire into 3 aspects namely; cognitive, affective, conative. The findings show that Cake Application is appropriate for learning English, particularly for strengthening students’ speaking abilities. Based on questionnaire data of the cognitive, affective, and cognitive aspects which show that almost all students feel that Cake Application is easy to use and helps them in the learning process. The Cake Application is highly valuable since it teaches them more about learning English and how to improve their speaking talents. Students also enjoy using the application since it may change a repetitious method of learning into a speaking method of learning with the use of technology.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to developed animation video as media in teaching writing narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this study, the procedured were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis designing the first draft of media, revising the media and producing the final product as the animation video. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaires to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. INTRODUCTION The interview and questionnaires result prove that the students need animation video as a media in teaching writing which can help the students to understand about the narrative text. The new animation video consists of some pictures, characters and explanations that can be used in teaching writing narrative text. The media had been validated by two validators. The first validator gave 89.6% and the second validator gave 95.2% that it could be inferred that the developed media was appropriate to be used for students. The result of the study was the animation video that the teacher can use as the teaching media of narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam.

Abstract

This study focused on developing students’ worksheet for teaching listening skill. The aim of this study was to develop students’ listening worksheet as an additional material for teaching listening skill to the eighth grade students of junior high school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students at SMP YPI Amir Hamzah Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire respondents to get the students’ needs worksheet as a media which can help them to understand about narrative text especially in listening skill. The finding of this study showed that the researcher has developed students’ worksheet that consists of 25 pages with 3 main parts such as the definition of narrative text, the components of narrative text and several exercises that can be used to comprehend the students understanding about narrative text. This worksheet has been validated by two validators, one from State University of Medan and one from SMP Amir Hamzah Medan. This worksheet has the average percentage was 95,5% and it categorized as very good.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and advances in information technology, the use of English is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon in many countries. English is often used in everyday communication, in the media, in the entertainment industry, and in the business sector. This phenomenon has sparked widespread debate about the social and cultural implications of the onslaught of English language use. English has a significant influence on nationalism and cultural awareness in Indonesia. The use of English as an international language can help Indonesians keep up with scientific developments and compete with other countries. However, the use of foreign languages can also lead to the loss of Indonesian identity as a language of national pride. This research aims to analyze the influence and impact of English as an Intercultural Communication Tool. In writing this scientific article using the literature review research method or literature study is the existence of a collection of theories related to the research problems carried out by researchers. As it is known that Globalization is currently very fast, of course there will be an impact in the future on all aspects of life. Such influences will be seen in the fields of education, and culture, and have an impact on nationalism awareness. Therefore, it is necessary to take action to prevent unwanted threats to Indonesian nationalism and culture. To address the phenomenon of the widespread use of English, a balanced approach is needed between the needs of global communication and the interests of maintaining national culture and identity. There is a need to raise awareness about the social, cultural, and economic significance of English language use so that people can make informed decisions about the potential use of English while strengthening their national identity and mother tongue.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an appropriate media for applying job chapter. This study was carried out at SMKS Karya Bunda Mandiri Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) Method. The research of Research and Development contained six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing the material, validating by the experts, revising material, and creating the last was the final product. The data was gathered by distributing questionnaires to students and interviewing an English teacher to get the students' needs. The study's conclusion resulted in developing the Interactive E-Book, which may be used as a teaching medium for students to learn writing descriptive text. The product has been validated by two experts in percentage terms; the average score of expert validations was 87.6% in the content aspect, the presentation aspect was 84.9%, the language aspect was 90.6%, and the layout was 90%. The average score was 88.275% which was categorized as very good, and it was suggested to use it in English class, especially for applying for job chapters at the Vocational School level.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop descriptive text writing material by using clustering technique to fulfill the needs of tenth grade students at SMA Gajah Mada Medan. This research was conducted using the Research and Development (R&D) Method. The Research and Development process were divided into six stages: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing material, expert validation, revising material, and finally, the final product. To discover what the students needed, data were gathered by handing out questionnaires to 38 tenth grade students and interviewing the English teacher at SMA Gajah Mada Medan. The study's findings led to the creation of INTRODUCTION descriptive text writing materials in PDF format that focus on the description of a location, particularly tourist attractions. The developed materials may be used as engaging learning tools for students. The product was validated by two experts, and the average score of their validations was 78% for content, 80% for presentation, 75% for language, and 85% for layout. The overall average was 79.5%, which was considered good and recommended for use in English classes, particularly for writing descriptive language at the senior high school level.

Abstract

The use of textbooks as a teaching media is similar to the conventional approach to class, applying a repeating strategy that students sometimes see as lacking in enthusiasm. As a result, the students' ability in speaking doesn't grow as expected. The research conducted at Permata Bangsa School Binjai with 19 eighth-grade students as the subjects. This study used a debate technique to cultivate speaking material particular focused on the British Parliamentary Style. This study was categorized as a Research and Development (R&D) with questionnaire, interview as the data. The experts gave 98% for the developed speaking materials which means the suitability of the materials for usage by eighth-grade students at Permata Bangsa School Binjai has been confirmed valid through expert validation. The final product named “Speaking Materials Utilizing a Debate Technique for Eighth Grade Students in Junior High School."

Abstract

As language usually shapes people’s socio-economics status, people has become opinionated that what education degree/level an individual has can be seen by the way they communicate. This paper explores whether it is also true for higher education people use less standardized language when speaking in daily life and if social media helps low-educated individuals to speak as formal as high-educated ones. This paper employed a mixed-method approach with 5 participants from the same level of education: undergraduate students. Findings indicate that indeed people with higher education level usually has distinctive style of communication compared to those with lower education yet it depends on the context of situation. In addition to the communication style, the proability of social media helping to form formal communication for lower educated individual is possible as they expose people to all kinds of information, including language. This research is expected to contribute to raising awareness about the relationship of education and communication style.
