Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the students’ reading comprehension proficiency in each levels of reading comprehension. This research was designed as a descriptive study. The data was obtained from the results of students’ answers to reading comprehension questions. The subjects of this study were the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 15 Medan. The levels of reading comprehension were based on Barrett Taxonomy (Clymer, 1968). The results of this research showed that the students were properly proficient within the literal comprehension (98%), reorganization (95%), and inferential comprehension (82%). In contrast, the students struggled within the evaluation level (65%) and appreciation level (50%). Students were suggested to continue improving their reading comprehensy, most especially in the evaluation and appreciation level comprehension. Teachers were suggested to guide the students to connect with the text in a more personal and involving way to improve their proficiency in appreciation comprehension level.

Abstract

The objective of this study as to develop an appropriate English listening songs material based on Scientific Approach for grade tenth. This study was carried out at SMAS Imelda Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. The research of Research and Development which contained six stages; gathering information and data, analysing data, designing materials, validating new materials by expert, revising materials based on expert suggestion, and final product. The data was gathered through the distribution of questionnaire for students and interviewed an English Teacher and students to get the student’s need. The study’s conclusion resulted in the development of the English listening songs material E-Book, which may be used as a learning material for students to learn English listening songs. The product has been validated by two experts in percentage terms, the average score of expert validation was 91.4% in linguistic aspect, the process aspect was 94.2%, the content aspect was 93%, and the layout was 92%. The average score was 93% which was categorized as very good and it was suggested to use in English class especially for English listening songs at Senior High School level.

Abstract

The goals of this research are to analyze students’ comprehension and performance in the listening to storytelling and to find out how the teacher teaching in the classroom. Descriptive qualitative was used as the research methodology. The subjects of the study are a ten year class of SMA Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan consisting of 20 students and an English teacher. Observation questionnaires  and documentation review as the research instruments to collect the data. Result of the study revealed that (1) Observing the teacher teach in classroom. (a) The teacher teach is  well because she is made students enjoy listen the story. (b) The teacher motivated the students to actively express their thought. (c) The teacher not only good as a storyteller but also explained clearly by using a gesture. (2) provides questionnaires to students. (d) The students succeeded in comprehending to stories with total score are 85% (3) From students performances in listening to storytelling in descriptive text, students were able to listen several words they often heard.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the application of higher order thinking skills in reading exercises questions in the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress Grade X that released by Kemendikbud RI in 2022, which implemented Kurikulum Merdeka is English book that beneficial in train Senior High School students grade tenth. In this textbook contained 55 reading questions in total. There were 30 or 54,54% reading questions that tested students' ability to think in higher order. Additionally, 25 or 45,45% reading exercise questions that tested students' lower-order thinking abilities. Despite being one of the most up-to-date textbooks currently used in the curriculum, this book already fulfils the distribution of higher-order thinking exercises. Using this Bloom’s Taxonomy especially revised, this research has improved HOTS in those practice because learners need in develop their critical thinking skills and capabilities to analyse, evaluate, and then create something that is beneficial in era of globalization.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explain the reasons behind the way cognitive processes of tenth- grade students occur in writing descriptive text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected by using students' writing and interview. The subjects of this study were the students of tenth grade at SMAS Amir Hamzah Medan. The findings of this study showed the reasons for tenth-grade students’ cognitive processes in writing were the students' habits of how they usually think about organizing their writing by determining the title and the subjects’ skills of composing an outline descriptive text, the different abilities to think in constructing sentences into text structures of descriptive text, namely identification, and description, and the students had the awareness to rethink their results by reading and reflecting on the text they had written and they revised errors in their text to ensure the results of writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to developed animation video as media in teaching writing narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this study, the procedured were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis designing the first draft of media, revising the media and producing the final product as the animation video. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaires to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. INTRODUCTION The interview and questionnaires result prove that the students need animation video as a media in teaching writing which can help the students to understand about the narrative text. The new animation video consists of some pictures, characters and explanations that can be used in teaching writing narrative text. The media had been validated by two validators. The first validator gave 89.6% and the second validator gave 95.2% that it could be inferred that the developed media was appropriate to be used for students. The result of the study was the animation video that the teacher can use as the teaching media of narrative text for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuk Pakam.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the difficulties which the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Methodist 9 Medan face in comprehending English reading text and investigate the factors which cause the difficulties. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study was one class of Eighth Grade students of SMP Methodist 9 Medan. This study used Reading Comprehension Test and Interview in collecting the data. The findings of this study showed that there were a total of 332 difficulties experienced by students in comprehending English reading text, they are (1) Students have a total of 67 difficulties in Determining Main Idea with a percentage of 20.2%. (2) Students have a total of 58 difficulties in Finding Detail Information with a percentage of 17.5%. (3) Students have a total of 62 difficulties in Making Inference with a percentage of 18.7%. (4) Students have a total of 63 difficulties in Identifying Reference with a percentage of 18.9%. (5) Students have a total of 82 difficulties in Understanding Vocabulary with a percentage of 24.7%. Meanwhile, factors of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension, namely: limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of fluency, lack of familiarity with the subject matter, the difficulty level of the text (readability), inadequate use of effective reading strategies, weak verbal reasoning, problems with processing information, and problems in recalling information after reading.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Teacher’s Questioning Strategy and Student Response in English Classroom Interaction of Grade VIII at SMP Imelda Medan. The subject of this study were two teachers and two classes of Grade VIII at SMP Imelda Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative design as a research method. The data were collected by doing observation to the classroom, interview to the two English teachers, and record English teaching learning process. The study focused on analyzing the three research questions in this study, they are the teacher’s way in apply questioning strategies in English classroom interaction, teachers’ reason in the use of questioning strategies in English classroom interaction, and how the student’s response to teacher questions. Using Xuerong theory where questioning strategy is divided into 2, namely Question-Planning Strategy and QuestionControlling Strategy, findings of the observation, interview and video recording showed that the two English Teachers in SMP Imelda Medan mostly used Question-controlling Strategy. The researcher also analyzed student’s responses in two classes of grade VIII. Based on the observation in the classroom and video recording, most students were silent when teachers were asking them. Only some students were active in giving responses, those mostly used cognitive in answering the question from teachers. Based on the interview with the teachers, the both teachers have similar purposes, they want to know students understanding, involving in teaching learning process and make the learning atmosphere comfortable and interesting. In addition, teacher 1 is more dominant in giving questions to all students in the class while teacher 2 gives questions to students individually.

Abstract

This study focused on developing students’ worksheet for teaching listening skill. The aim of this study was to develop students’ listening worksheet as an additional material for teaching listening skill to the eighth grade students of junior high school. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students at SMP YPI Amir Hamzah Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire respondents to get the students’ needs worksheet as a media which can help them to understand about narrative text especially in listening skill. The finding of this study showed that the researcher has developed students’ worksheet that consists of 25 pages with 3 main parts such as the definition of narrative text, the components of narrative text and several exercises that can be used to comprehend the students understanding about narrative text. This worksheet has been validated by two validators, one from State University of Medan and one from SMP Amir Hamzah Medan. This worksheet has the average percentage was 95,5% and it categorized as very good.
