Abstract

This study deals with the designing of English Speaking Materials By Using Digital Storytelling Project For The Eleventh Grade Students of Senior High School. The objectives of this study are: (1) to know the English speaking materials needed by grade eleventh students of senior high school, (2) to design appropriate English speaking materials by using digital storytelling project for the eleventh grade students of senior high school. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research procedures of this study is Research and Development (R&D) through three phases : 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) course design, and 3) materials validation. The instruments used were questionnaire, interview and documentation sheet. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive technique and the data from expert judgement results were using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study is a course book of speaking materials by using digital storytelling project which consist of title, objective, introduction, observing, practices and reflection. The materials consist of three units, they are What Is Your Opinion, How May I Help You? and You Are Loved. Based on the experts‟ judgement result, the score was 3.97 which belongs to good category.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing features of teacher talk in teaching speaking. The subject of this study were English Teacher and 40 students at first grade of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected through the following: observation, and audio recording. In this research, the FLINT is used to identify the categories of teacher talk occur during the learning process. Moreover, this study is conducted in the form of descriptive qualitative research where the researcher as the non-participant observer on the classroom. From the data that has been taken, it is obtained that the categories of teacher talk used by the teacher in teaching speaking in the first grader of SMA Negeri 20 Medan are deals with feeling, praises or encourages, jokes, uses ideas of students, repeats students response verbatim, ask questions, gives information, corrects without rejection, give direction, criticizes student behavior, and Criticize student response. The finding of the study showed that there are eleven features of teacher talk occur in English classroom interaction and the dominant feature of teacher talk was ask questions (40.2%). The feature of teacher talk which is dominantly used by the teacher help students more active in the class because the teacher gave the oppurtunity to the learners to deliver their ideas, and try their ability in speaking skill.

Abstract

This research was aimed to develop English speaking materials for the students of Accounting program at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang especially the tenth grade. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through four phases; Evaluation and Need Analysis, Material Development, Material Validation and Revision and Final Product. It was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang. The date were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 10 students to get the student’s needs. The result of questionnaire showed that the relevance of existing Speaking material with Accounting major just 35 % (less relevant) and 90 % of the students need the relevance English speaking material with their major and related to work situation. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English Speaking materials which contain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the syllabus, student’s level and major. The material developed into 3 units based on the basic competence on syllabus; Congratulating and Complimenting, Expressing Intention, and Giving Announcement. The product of English speaking material validated by two experts, lecturer and English teacher. The result of experts’ judgment is 89.5 and it belongs to good category. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used for students of Accounting program especially in SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang.

Abstract

This study aims with reading comprehension of grade ten students of SMA SW Katolik Budi Murni 2 Medan. The objective of this study is(1) describe the students reading comprehension across text of different lexical density and topic familiarity and (2) to find out the effect of lexical density and topic familiarity in reading comprehension. The research was conducted bydescriptive qualitative with non-parametric statistic research. The research was conducted in SMA SW Katolik Budi Murni 2 Medan at the grade ten classroom. the sample of the research were 10 students. The instruments for collecting data used in this research were six reading text with different lexical density and topic familiarity and of reading comprehension test.The result of the analysis showed that: (1) Familiar text is easier to comprehend for the students than the unfamiliar text when they both have low lexical density, while familiar text with medium and high lexical density is the same difficult for the students to comprehend as the unfamiliar text. (2) Text with low lexical density is easier for the students to comprehend than text with medium and high lexical density when the texts are both familiar. While texts with low and medium lexical density is the same difficult for the students to comprehend as the text with high lexical density when the text are unfamiliar.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a Pop Up Book as learning media for teaching reading narrative text for tenth grade students at SMA Swasta Raksana Medan. The research method that used in this study was Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this study was tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Raksana Medan. Questionnare was administrated to the teacher and students to get information about students’ need, existing media. It was found that 79% students said that they were bored learning English in reading skill by using textbook. 89% student said that the media that the teacher used was uninteresting and didn’t make significant improvement. 91% student said that they need an interesting, creative, and innovative media. 89% student said that the media that have been designed was appropriate to use. The instrument of collecting the data used questionnaire to experts from English teacher and English Lectrurer. Research Procedures was modified into five steps, they were: evaluation and need analysis, media design, validation, revision and final product. The product has been validated by experts (material and media). The data are analyzed by using descriptive technique. The product has been validated by material expert and media expert. For the first expert the media was 83% valid in material aspect, and 90% valid in media aspect. While from the second expert the media was 95% valid in material aspect and 100% valid in media aspect. Based on the validation result, the media develop media was very good and appropriate to be used for teaching reading for the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Raksana Medan.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop English speaking materials of descriptive text for Tenth Grade students of Marketing Study Program at SMK based on scientific approach. The subjects of the research were grade X students of marketing study program at SMK Negeri 1 Medan. This research was classified as Research and Development (R&D). The research procedure was adapted from the research procedure proposed by Gall, Gall and Borg (2003). There were two questionnaires used to collect the data. The first questionnaire was used to collect data in need analysis while the second questionnaire was used to collect the data about the appropriateness of the materials in the expert judgment. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The research findings showed that English speaking materials of descriptive text developed have met good characteristic and appropriate for grade ten students of marketing study program. It was indicated by the mean of expert judgments. The mean score for content is 3.5 which categorized as “Very Good”. The mean score for language is 3.8 which categorized as “Very Good”. The mean score for presentation is 3.5 which categorized as “Very Good”. The mean score for graphic is 3.75 which categorized as “Very Good”.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop PowToon as media for teaching the 8 students in writing descriptive text at SMPN 6 Percut Sei Tuan. This study used the qualitative descriptive method. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data, designing media, validating by the expert, revising media, and final product. The Instrument of Collecting Data was questionnaire. The finding showed that one video of PowToon was used to teach English writing to Junior High School. The developed media PowToon had been validated by two experts and the average score has gotten was 87%. It was categorized “Excellent” since that the developed to teaching media PowToon for writing skills were suitable for the 8 grade students of SMPN 6 Percut Sei Tuan.

Abstract

This study was about IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) On Classroom Interaction For Computer Students in SMK 1 Yapim Medan. The aim of this study were to state clearly the objectives of the study in relation of the problems posed. The objective was to describe how the pattern of IRF in the classroom interaction for computer students. This research used qualitative research. The data were collected in three ways by observing by video recording, interviewing and questionnaire. The data was analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The result of this study were the following (1) The language used by the teacher and the students in the classroom interaction was not balance. Both teacher and students used bahasa for 70% and the rest 30% for English. (2) There was the lowest pattern responded by student. It had 20% responses given to the students because the students made many mistakes in pronouncing some words when they read the text. The teacher feedback was the dominat pattern in the classroom interaction rather than initiation. It is suggested to English teacher especially for English teacher who is teaching computer students to improve students English by by having practice and supporting them to be brave to speak English.

Abstract

This study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students‟ recount text of the eight grade at SMP RK Budi Mulia Pematangsiantar. The aim of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used (2) to find out the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students‟ recount text. The instrument of collecting data was elicitation technique and interview. The data were analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The result of this study were the following, (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students‟ recount text, they were Theme Reteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig- zag/Linear Theme Pattern (Zig-zag/LTP). (2) The reason in use of thematic progression by students, they were: (a) the student‟s lack of knowledge about use of the thematic progression (b) they also less interested in writing, (c) the students got resources from reading material and (d) the students got resources from english teacher‟s explanation.

Abstract

This study focused on the use of tanslation in teaching listening for the eleventh grade. The aim of this study was to describe the use of translation and analyze the reasons of using translation in teaching listening grade eleventh at SMA Negeri 2 Kisaran. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken from one english teacher of SMA Negeri 2 Kisaran. The data were collected by using recording, interviewing and observing the whole processes of teaching listening. The findings of this study showed that there were 34 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. The reasons of using translation in teaching listening were facilitating communication, teacher- student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching listening.
