Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the effect of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on students’ achievement in reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text. Experimental design was applied in this research. The population was the 2014/2015 second year students (grade XI) of SMA Swasta YAPIM Medan. There were two paralel classes that consisted of 34 students. The total number of the population were 68 students. The total number of the sample were 68 students. The researcher selected the sample by using total sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) strategy while the control group was taught without using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) strategy. The data were taken by administering the pre-test and post-test to both control and experimental groups. These data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of computing the t-test obviously showed that t-observed (5.61) is higher than t-table (1.99) with the degree of freedom (df= 66) at the level significance 0.05. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating that there is a significant effect of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on students’ achievement in reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text is accepted. Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop reading materials by using Edmodo for grade tenth at SMAN 11 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing materials and  media, validating, revising (final product). The subject of the study was grade tenth of  SMAN 11 Medan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting interview  to English teacher and distributting questionnaire to X IPA 7 consists of 36 students to get the students’ need. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students need the high order thinking reading materials and media. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts which are the average scores (4.55 and 4.05) show that the reading materials are valid and suitable to use for grade tenth students of SMAN 11 Medan. The result of product distributed to the students through edmodo.

Abstract

The study deals with the developing interactive media for senior high school students. The objective of this study is to find out how to develop interactive media for better speaking skill of senior high school students. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was 2016/2017 students of the eleventh grade of Class XI IPA4 in SMAN 1 Batang Kuis. The number of the students was 30 students. The data of this study was collected by using need analysis questionnaire and experts’ judgment. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated by using percentage to get the information of students’ need before developing interactive media. Experts’ judgment was calculated by using likert data, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of interactive media which has been developed. After the data analyzed, it was found that the experts’ judgment result was 4.80 which had a very good criteria interval. The result of the research find that interactive media is a very good to be used in teaching speaking skill.  Keywords: Interactive Media, Digital Storytelling, R&D

Abstract

The research focuses on the role of the teacher as a facilitator.The objective ofresearch was to know what are the characteristics of teacher’s role as a facilitatorto enhance EFL students’ speaking skill. This study was conducted at SMA PAB 4Sampali, Medan which the sample was the twenty five students and an Englishteacher at grade XI that had been selected by doing an observation and deliveringquestionnaire based on the characteristics of teacher’s role as a facilitator. Themethod for this research was qualitative descriptive. The data was collected bydistributing the questionnaire and doing an observation during the learning process.The results showed that the teacher completely fulfill the characteristics of teacher’srole as a facilitator.It is because the students dominantly choose strongly agree inthree characteristics and agree in five characteristics, that are Partnership (92%),Participant (96%), Knowledge available (84%), Open learning (84), and also Widerhorizon (60%).It was also found that the students choose that they are strongly agreein three caharacteristics, that are Focuses on learning (76%), Studentscentered(68%), and Sharing (68%).Meanwhile, the teacher can not play twocharacteristics, because the students dominantly choose disagree in Focus onIndividual Learning Needs (92%) and Let Students Set Parameter (68%).During thelearning process confirmed that the teacher was able to play a role as a facilitator.Itcan be seen from ten characteristics, the teacher had eight characteristics as afacilitator. However, it is so important for the teacher to have the characteristics asa facilitator in supporting students to enhance their speaking skill.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop PowToon as media for teaching the 8 studentsin writing descriptive text at SMPN 6 Percut Sei Tuan. This study used the qualitativedescriptive method. This research was conducted based on educational research anddevelopment (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data,designing media, validating by the expert, revising media, and final product. TheInstrument of Collecting Data was questionnaire. The finding showed that one videoof PowToon was used to teach English writing to Junior High School. The developedmedia PowToon had been validated by two experts and the average score has gottenwas 87%. It was categorized “Excellent” since that the developed to teaching mediaPowToon for writing skills were suitable for the 8 grade students of SMPN 6 PercutSei Tuan.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the types of collocation used in the English textbook for grade X students in senior high school, to find out the most dominant used of collocation, and to describe how the collocations applied in the 3 genre texts contained in the textbook. The data of this study were the collocations used in 3 genre texts, descriptive, recount, and narrative of an English textbook for tenth grade students in senior high school. After analysing the data, the researcher found 6 types of collocations used in the 3 genre text. The result showed that the textbook use 6 types of collocations (adjective + noun, verb + noun, noun + noun, verb + preposition, verb + adverb, adverb + adjective), and the most dominant collocation used was the adjective + noun type of collocation. The use of collocation in the narrative text was the biggest percentage of (38%), followed by the recount text of (35%) and the last was the descriptive text of (27%).Keywords: Collocation, Types of collocations, Genre Text, English Textbook.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was aimed at finding out the effect of applying Quantum Learning on the Students’ Achievement in Writing Argumentation. The objective of the study was to find out whether the application of Writing Argumentation. This study used the experimental method. The population was the 2010/2011 third year students of SMA N.1 DOLOK BATU NANGGAR, totally 240 students. The sample was 60 students of randomly chosen as the representative of population. They were divided into two groups. The first group (experimental group) was taught by applying Quantum Learning while the second group (control group) was taught with conventional method. The test was divided into two groups, pre- test and post- test. The instrument used in this study was a writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. T-observerd was 3.75 and the t-table was 2.000 (p=0.05). The result of the analysis shows that the value of the t- table (3.75> 2.000; p= 0.05), it could be consulted that Quantum Learning has significant effect on the teaching argumentative writing. Abstract

The objective of this study were to  find out the dominant types of Theme and Rheme used in students’ writing in Science and Social Class and to describe the Theme and Rheme realized in students’ writing in Science and Social Class. Theme is what the writer taking about and rheme was this was what writer saying about and common used in the text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this study was students’ writing of Recount Text from tenth grade of Science and Social class in SMA Kartika 1-2 Medan. The data were collected from the students’ writing. From the research, it was found all the kinds of theme: topical, textual, interpersonal, marked and unmarked theme were found. And the most dominant kind of theme was marked theme and topical theme.The Theme realization pattern were found in students’ writing of recount text in both Science and Social class namely, topical theme, textual-topical theme and interpersonal-topical theme. While topical-textual-interpersonal was occured in this research simultaneously.Keywords: Theme and Rheme, Students’ Writing, Different Objects.

Abstract

This study attempts to discover the effect of applying Personal Experiences Strategy on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMA N 6 Padangsidimpuan  which consists of 10 parallel classes with the total number of students is 64. The samples of this research were taken by random sampling through lottery technique. The result was class X1 consisted of 32 students became the experimental group and class X2 consisted of 32 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by Personal Experiences Strategy while the control group was taught by using Big group work strategy. The instrument was used to collect the data was writing narrative text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of t-observed was 4.25 with the degree of freedom (df) = 62 at the level significance 0.05. it means that t-observed was higher than t-table (4.25 > 1.997. The result of this study showed that teaching narrative text by using personal experiences strategy was higher than that by big group work. Keywords : Using Personal Experiences Strategy. Abstract

This study was aimed to develop Seesaw as media based on Scientific Approach for teaching speaking of recount text for grade ten at SMA Swasta Tritunggal Tanjungbalai. This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, conducting needs analysis, designing Seesaw as media based on Scientific Approach, validating the product to the experts, revising the product, and releasing Seesaw as media as the final product. The subjects of the study were the English teacher and grade ten students of SMA Swasta Tritunggal Tanjungbalai. The data were gathered by document study, interviewing the English teacher, and distributing questionnaires to grade ten students of science class that consisted of 26 students to get the students’ needs. The product (Seesaw) had validated by two experts, namely; an English lecturer and an English teacher. The overall assessment showed that the developed Seesaw was valid to be used for teaching spoken recount text by obtaining an average score of 4.46 or 89.2% and it was categorized as “very good”.
