Journal of English in Academic and Professional Communication (JEAPCo) is a journal published twice a year focusing on the field of English as a second or foreign language which is widely applied in various academic and professional contexts across cultures and nations. The journal encourages exchanges of information and knowledge generated from research and non-research contributions in order to widen perspectives and to strengthen the educational practices of English Language and Communication Teaching, to encourage link between education in these areas and workplace world, and particularly to develop the field of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) across disciplines. More specific areas are those related to need analysis, curriculum and pedagogy, materials development, assessment, corpus and multimodality, technology and CALL, implications of professional communication practices to the English teaching and learning, issues of employability and the relationship between English language teaching and workplace demands, and other issues concerned with the nature of English language and professional communication across different academic settings, workplaces, and cultures. The journal invites teachers, academics, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers who are interested in the issues above to publicize their works. The forms of submission to this journal are: 1. (original) research articles, 2. literature review articles, 3. practitioner inquiry articles, and 4. reflection and innovation articles

Abstract

Equipping students with Sociopragamatic awareness is very crucial to be deployed. Since Sociopragmatic competences are required in communications, the ELT teachers need to facilitate them with engaging activities and authentic material. Making the students engage actively in classroom instruction will increase their enthusiasm and spread the positivity among the students. However, inserting Socioragmatic into classroom instruction is rarely to be implemented by the teachers. To fill this void, the article presents activities to arouse the students Sociopragmatic awareness through locally situated process. This process is implemented in form of Discourse Completion Task (DCT), movie clips, and comic strips. These classroom activities are believed to give opportunities for the students to experience language practices therefore they know how to use the sensitive English.

Abstract

This study aims to look over the use of the Learning Management System (LMS) in teaching speaking for the Basic English course. The subject of the research is the first-semester students of Mechatronics Engineering. This paper will apply descriptive qualitative research. The data will take from a survey of 76 students to know the practice of LMS in teaching speaking. The result shows that the speaking material that has been uploaded is useful for students to understand the topic. Moreover, the features in LMS Moodle such as downloading materials, submitting assignments, and quizzes are easy to operate so that teaching-learning through LMS can run well. The LMS also helps the teacher to be creative in designing the materials for teaching to make the students do the task better.

Abstract

College students should meet numerous requirements to produce a well-written academic paper. One of those requirements is constructing correct references. Nonetheless, based on the phenomenon spotted in the author’s academic writing class, arranging references manually is not an effortless task. Time-consuming and style memorizing are the two main obstacles faced by the students. To answer the preceding problems, the author, the teacher in charge in class, proposed a solution by implementing EndNote as reference management software. It enables students to write references automatically. Seventy students were involved as the participants while EndNote was administered. To cascade the knowledge of the mechanism of implementing EndNote, this paper aimed to describe the steps involved. Video recording and checklist form were utilized as research instruments. The results revealed four steps of implementing EndNote used by the teacher. They are planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. By explaining those steps, it is expected that the mechanism of implementing EndNote can be explained and adapted by other teachers and students facing the same problems.

Abstract

Recently, learning activities based on Word Search Puzzles have become a trend inteaching and learning. These activities are believed to increase students' vocabulary.This study reviews the use of Word Search Puzzles in improving students’ vocabulary.The analysis includes 25 relevant papers that meet the required criteria, and the findingsare summarized in the table. These papers answer four main QA (Question-Answer)regarding the effectiveness of Word Search Puzzles in enhancing the students’vocabulary. All 25 papers have a similar research focus, which is related to theeffectiveness of Word Search Puzzles in improving/increasing/enhancing students’vocabulary. All papers use experimental research methods to know the effect of thecomparison of two learning media by using Word Search Puzzle and other learningmedia. Two comparisons this learning media uses control class and experiment class. Acomparison was made of the results of the improvement and mastery of students'vocabulary. It shows that Word Search Puzzle is effective in improving students'vocabulary mastery. This can be seen from the scores of the pretest to posttest in thecontrol and experimental class. There is a significant difference between theexperimental class's pre-band post-test mean scores. Further research is neededconsidering that Word Search Puzzles can be applied in all fields of science.

Abstract

Singapore is home to a number of significant ethnic groups, including Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, whose contributions have shaped the distinctive characteristics of Singlish in comparison to standard English. This study aims to examine the morphological and syntactic characteristics of Singlish, an English-based creole spoken in Singapore, emphasizing its impact on interethnic communication. Using comparative analysis, Singlish's morphological and syntactic characteristics were compared to those of standard English and the languages of the three largest ethnic groups in Singapore (Chinese, Malay, and Tamil). Examining grammatical patterns, word order, sentence structure, and the use of particular linguistic features would be required. The findings demonstrate that Singlish utilizes distinctive syntactic patterns that frequently incorporate Malay, Chinese, and Tamil grammatical formulas. Singlish, in contrast to standard English, lacks subject and object pronouns and frequently employs "sentence-ending particles" such as what, leh, lor, hah, and meh, in addition to lah. In addition, the copula be is frequently omitted before adjectives, nouns, and locatives in Singlish. In addition, the presence of word repetition and word drop in Singlish can be traced back to the Chinese dialect Hokkien. The Singaporean government has attempted to discourage the use of Singlish; however, this has sparked controversy due to the significance of the language in interethnic communication and its reflection of interethnic identity. As a result, Singlish is a fascinating subject for linguistic and sociological study, with significant implications for language education and policy.

Abstract

This study attempts to describe the ability of speaking skill as oral communication in public by giving the task of individual presentation performance. This study addresses to the result of speaking course as a part of Intermediate English subject. It was conducted to Renewable Energy Engineering students in the academic year of 2022-2023 as well as their main objective of English Study. The researcher is interested to have the data of public speaking achievement because the importance of public speaking skill regarding inability of students to speak in public or perform oral presentation. When all oral presentations are marked as evidence that students' speaking abilities could meet the needs of the industry, this has become more difficult. Unfortunately, graduates nowadays do not possess the degree of oral presenting abilities that are fulfil the demand of stake holder. In this research, the research study is designed as descriptive quantitative research to have the data of students public speaking ability and describe their performance. The researcher used random sampling and Task based Test instrument to have the data of student public speaking ability and also observation to have the data of student public speaking performance. The research finding would be included of the student performance and the task result by speaking rubric which is included the speaking skill components. The results of research showed that by giving presentation task, it has good level for students’ public speaking ability and the result of presentation task builds the Renewable Energy Engineering student’s confidence to perform public speaking.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the interference of Indonesian lexical made by   students of Automotive Engineering Study Program of Engineering Department of Politeknik Negeri Jember in their descriptive writing texts. This is a descriptive  study, the data were collected and documented using elicitation teqchnique, and then analyzed by using theory of language interference. This study revealed that there were 40 students made 239 lexical errors in their descriptive writing texts. The identified lexical errors were classified based on their frequencies. From the lexical errors analyzed, the result showed that the category of lexical errors committed by the students in their descriptive writing texts were 5 categories, lexical errors in the form of borrowing (17errors/7%), lexical errors in the form of calque (75 errors/31%) lexical errors in the form of misspelling (72 errors/30%), lexical errors in the form of misselection (53 errors/23%) lexical errors in the form of semantic confusion (22 errors/9%), The students made lexical errors in attempting to follow English sentence construction standards. The differences between the grammatical aspects of the English language and the Indonesian language mean that distinct of lexical errors are committed. The interference of the students' native tongue and their insufficient comprehension of some English grammar rules are to blame for these errors. To construct a decent and acceptable sentence, it is important to teach the students about the distinctions between the two languages' structural differences. The way that topics are handled in Indonesian and English has to be emphasized by the teachers.

Abstract

In this globalized and digitalized world, translation activities play a crucial role in facilitating interlingual communication, opening access to knowledge and information worldwide, and strengthening cultural exchange across the globe. This paper discusses the essential issues related to translation, translation types, texts and meaning, and the types of texts in translation. Each part explores translation theories from pioneers of translation theories such as Jakobson, Catford, Nida and Taber, Newmark, and Larson, while modern theories such as Munday and others are also elaborated to provide a common ground for translation practice.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an innovative and student-centric approach to education that has gained widespread attention for its ability to engage learners in authentic and real-world problem-solving experiences. However, deploying this activity in ELT classroom is not an easy thing to do. To address this gap, this article presents detailed activities to be deployed in class, together with its fundamental principles, benefits, for teachers and students. The implementation of PBL activities in Junior High School level showcase the students’ empowerment to become active, engaged, and lifelong seekers of knowledge. The activities also align with modern workforce demands, as it equips students with 21st-century skills like adaptability, collaboration, problem-solving, and communication.

Abstract

Constructing Project-based Learning (PjBL) is crucial for the students of vocational college because it will help them to know more about the real condition in a workplace. It also make them able to do a professional job while studying. This study aims to describe the implementation of Project-based learning (PjBL) in establishing a promotion media in a form of video for 5 minutes duration based on the client need. The client was English Study Program and Language Center State Polytechnic of Jember. The subject of the study was 48 students of English Study Program in the fourth semester. The students had to finish two videos in one semester that was one video as a group project and one video as an individual project. Then, they had to upload those videos in YouTube channel.The method of research was descriptive qualitative. The data taken from the process of developing a video started from planning to product evaluation. This study applied some steps in implementing PjBL that were demanding problem or question, sustained inquiry, authenticity, students’ voice and choice, reflection, critic and revision, and public product. The result showed that the students were able to produce a promotional video in such categories such as travelling to tourism object, event, how to, and advertisement.
