Abstract

The field of language education has recognized educational transformations driven by advancements in information and communication technology (ICT). From traditional tools to intelligent digital innovations, the journey has been marked by continuous evolution. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language education, termed Intelligent Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (ITELL), represents a paradigm shift. This paper explores the reality of ITELL in higher education, focusing on how AI is used in language teaching, teachers' perspectives, policy implications, challenges, and strategies employed. A qualitative case study approach explored the integration of AI in TELL in higher education. Seven English language teachers in Indonesia, employing AI tools, participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis of interview data provides insights into teachers' practices, perceptions, and challenges of AI in language education. Methodological rigour was ensured through member-checking, peer debriefing, and adherence to ethical guidelines. The findings emphasize the positive impact of AI on enriching teachers' perspectives, enhancing materials development, enlivening in-class teaching, and facilitating efficient assessments. However, challenges such as depersonalization and ethical considerations were highlighted. A hybrid model that balances AI-driven personalization with human interaction was promoted. Fundamental prerequisites for successful AI integration include teacher professional development, aligned curriculum, pedagogical exploration, and a comprehensive policy framework.

Abstract

This is a research and development (R&D) with the aim of developing a vocational-themed English application model for SMK in Jember. There were three steps carried out to complete this study including categorizing the areas of expertise offered at State Vocational Schools (SMKN) in Jember, analyzing the use of information technology in learning English at SMKN in Jember by distributing questionnaire to the English teachers and interview, and designing a vocational-themed English learning application model. The result of the study is a model of an Android-based application for English learning specific for SMK under seven vocational expertise fields covering four English skills and two components. Those are reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Moreover, the application also covers grammar and vocabulary materials specific for SMK students. The application model is the basis of developing the prototype of the vocational-themed English learning application. From the model, an English learning application which is specifically designed for students of vocational high schools can be created based on 7 areas of expertise, as found through the study, including: 1) Technology and Engineering, 2) Information and Communication Technology, 3) Agribusiness and Agro-technology, 4) Maritime Affairs, 5) Business and Management, 6) Tourism, and 7) Arts and Creative Industries.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss one of the local cultures in the form of dance and its integration in English language learning in an effort to preserve the local culture and promote students' cultural awareness. The research design deployed was descriptive qualitative. Two art practitioners served as the subjects of the study and the data were obtained through an interview process. The data were analyzed using four steps data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. In addition, library study was also used to understand and study theories from various literature or sources related to the study. The findings showed that Lahbako Dance tells the story of the tobacco processing process starting from harvesting to packaging. In its development, the dance is modified because of the need for innovation and adaptation to developments and promoting its sustainability. In language teaching, its success depends on the use of teaching materials that accurately reflect authentic language use and cultural settings. Lahbako Dance can be inserted into the teaching and learning activities as an authentic material that can promote students' language skills, motivation, and cultural awareness. By doing so, local culture can also be well-preserved. Further studies related to the developments of other authentic materials are suggested.

Abstract

This study examines the multidimensional barriers affecting the speaking proficiency of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners at AKPRIND University, Indonesia. Using a multiple-case study design, the research investigates psychological, linguistic, and pedagogical factors that hinder students’ communication skills. The study focuses on first-year EFL students from diverse academic programs during the 2024/2025 academic year. Findings reveal that speech anxiety, linguistic deficiencies, and traditional teaching methods significantly impede students’ oral communication. Many learners experience high anxiety levels, triggering psychological defence mechanisms that further restrict their speech fluency. The study shows the need for pedagogical transformation, advocating for neurolinguistic strategies, psychological interventions, and interactive teaching methodologies. Key recommendations include the adoption of student-centred communication models, the use of digital tools, and the creation of an inclusive learning environment. This research contributes to the broader discourse on EFL learning by offering insights into the complex interplay between psychological and pedagogical barriers in language learning.
