Abstract

The author in making this journal aims to provide more understanding and information for many people, so that it can be used for their further research or become reference material for their assignments. In making it, the author chooses a qualitative method because it can get a lot of information presented in words or explanatory sentences. The topic taken in journal writing is about metaphor and personification in the poems of William Shakespeare and William Blake. The poems taken by the researcher are four titles namely ‘Sonnet 16’, Sonnet 18 (Shall I Compare Thee to Summer's Day?’, “The Tyger”, and “London”. This research produces the same number of metaphors and personification, 11, with William Shakespeare's poems using the least metaphors and personification compared to William Blake's poems. So, in this research the author can provide a lot of new information to be used in activities or tasks carried out in education, to add information as a complement to previous journals.

Abstract

In linguistics, a peculiarity is the most basic unit of phonological structure that can be analysed in phonological theory. Distinguishing traits are categorized according to the natural segment classes they describe: major class traits, larynx traits, manner traits, and place traits. The paper does not have a specific section for methods. However, in this paper the author provides a detailed analysis of the phonological processes of assimilation in the Amharic language. The paper explains how assimilation predominantly takes place contiguously and mainly at word or morpheme boundaries, hence mainly morphophonemic in nature. The author discusses different types of assimilation processes such as voice assimilation, glottalization, palatalization, etc. and provides ample examples from the language. The paper also describes how most of the values in language are predicted on the basis of other features under combinatorial specification and radical under specification. Additionally, the paper describes the patterns of units of phonological analysis in Amharic, which occur in particular regular patterns that need to be discovered for each language. Overall, the paper provides a comprehensive understanding of feature specifications, morphophonemic process, and feature geometry of Amharic language.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the English vocabulary mastery of Electrical Engineering students at the State Polytechnic of Samarinda. A descriptive research method was employed, focusing on assessing students' vocabulary knowledge through a standardized vocabulary test administered to 40 respondents. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics to determine the overall proficiency levels. The results indicated that the students’ mastery of English vocabulary was generally satisfactory, with most students achieving good scores. The study also identified several factors contributing to this achievement, including the students' interest in learning English, their active participation in classroom exercises, the effectiveness of the teaching methods used by lecturers, and the availability of supportive educational facilities, such as a language laboratory. These findings suggest that while the current level of vocabulary mastery is adequate, continued emphasis on these supporting factors could further enhance students' language proficiency, ultimately improving their academic and professional prospects.

Abstract

The intricacies of Japanese verbs related to the concept of "giving" present a compelling area of study, reflecting the nuanced nature of language and cultural expression. Despite the significance of these verbs in everyday communication, there has been limited research that systematically maps their semantic distinctions. This study addresses this gap by exploring the meaning configuration of key Japanese verbs associated with the concept of giving. Building on previous linguistic analyses, this research employs the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory to provide a more detailed explication of the verbs ageru, kureru, suru, and tsukeru. The data, sourced from "Minna no Nihongo" Volumes I and II as well as internet sources, were collected through an observation method combined with note-taking. The analysis reveals subtle yet significant differences in how these verbs are used, particularly in relation to the types of entities involved and the context of their application. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Japanese verb semantics, offering valuable insights for both linguistic theory and practical language learning.
