Abstract

The development of Tanah Lot Temple as a prominent tourist destination in Bali has significantly influenced the region’s economic, social, and environmental dynamics. This study aims to examine these impacts by analyzing the economic contributions of tourism, the social transformations experienced by local communities, and the environmental challenges arising from increased visitation. Additionally, the study seeks to propose sustainable tourism strategies that balance economic growth with cultural and environmental preservation. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews and observations to gather data from visitors, local businesses, and community members. Interviews focus on perceptions regarding tourism’s economic benefits, cultural shifts, and environmental concerns. Observations are conducted at the site to assess visitor behavior, infrastructure conditions, and environmental changes. The collected data are analyzed thematically to identify key trends and perspectives. The findings reveal that tourism at Tanah Lot Temple significantly contributes to the local economy, particularly in trade, hospitality, and services. However, the rapid growth of tourism has also introduced several challenges. Socially, the local community faces a dilemma between preserving cultural heritage and adapting to commercial tourism demands. While many residents take pride in the temple’s global recognition, concerns about cultural erosion and over-commercialization persist. Environmentally, issues such as waste management, congestion, and land degradation emphasize the need for sustainable management. In conclusion, while Tanah Lot Temple’s tourism industry generates substantial economic benefits, addressing the associated social and environmental challenges is crucial for long-term sustainability. Effective infrastructure management, active community involvement in decision-making, and the adoption of eco-friendly tourism practices are essential strategies. By integrating these approaches, Tanah Lot Temple can continue to thrive as a responsible and sustainable tourist destination that preserves its cultural and environmental integrity.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the potential for developing Tengkudak village as a tourist village from the perspective of the local community. Data collection through observation, interviews, and literature study using quantitative descriptive analysis. The sample was determined as 100 people through proportional random sampling. Informants were selected from the community who understood the existence of the village through proportional random sampling. The research results show that the local community basically strongly agrees with developing this village as a tourist village, with a score of 4.11 (agreeing to develop it into a tourist village). To be able to maximize the development of the tourist village, it is necessary to involve pentahelic actors (government, academics, tourism actors, the media, and local communities) in the development of the tourist village. The government is only limited to facilitating, and local communities are the main actors in developing tourist villages, so they can better understand natural and cultural phenomena, as a determinant of the quality of tourism products owned by the village. This can certainly foster a common perception of all Pentahelix actors and provide the widest possible space for local communities as the main actors in developing tourist villages.

Abstract

The food court at Jimbaran, Bali, is a vibrant culinary hub offering a diverse array of local and international cuisines. This study explores the culinary experiences within the food court, examining visitor preferences, food variety, and the cultural significance of the dishes. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research incorporates direct observations, interviews with food vendors and visitors, and thematic analysis of the available culinary options. The findings highlight a unique blend of traditional Balinese cuisine, Indonesian specialties, and international dishes catering to both local and foreign tourists. Popular choices include seafood grills, Balinese lawar, and globally influenced street food-style offerings. Additionally, the study identifies key factors contributing to customer satisfaction, such as food quality, pricing, ambiance, and service. The research concludes that Jimbaran’s food court is more than a dining space—it serves as a cultural attraction reflecting Bali’s dynamic culinary landscape. The fusion of traditional and modern flavours enhances its appeal, making it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts. Future research could examine the impact of culinary tourism on local businesses and the sustainability of food sourcing in commercial dining spaces.

Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to analyse the layers of symbolism embedded in the Legong dance of Bali. Rather than seeing Legong as simply “traditional dance,” this research investigates its deeper meanings—particularly how gestures, facial expressions, and costume are entwined with cultural myth and identity. The study also seeks to understand how these symbolic forms maintain cultural relevance for Balinese communities in contemporary times. Data collection involved observing Legong performances both live in Bali and through online recordings, ensuring a broad perspective on variations and consistencies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with dancers, instructors, and cultural practitioners, focusing on how symbolism is taught, experienced, and understood. Informal participation in dance workshops provided an insider’s perspective on the embodied aspects of Legong symbolism. Detailed field notes were maintained, complemented by informal conversations that sometimes occurred in less formal settings like temple grounds. Every movement—from a delicate hand flick to intense, controlled eye movements—serves as a signifier within Balinese storytelling. Dancers are trained to communicate complex narratives about deities, conflict, courtship, and heroism through nonverbal cues. The use of ornate costumes, heavily jewelled headdresses, and vibrant fabrics reinforces the mythic quality of the characters portrayed. Even details like finger extensions and golden crowns contribute to the representation of supernatural or historical figures. Symbolism in Legong is sustained via a mixture of formal instruction and communal participation.
