Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using adapted digital comics to enhance student learning motivation at SMK PGRI Pekanbaru. The research was conducted in a vocational high school setting with participation from a group of students. An experimental method was employed, involving the measurement of student learning motivation before and after the intervention with digital comics. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, student questionnaires, and expert validations. The data analysis included paired t-tests to assess the significance of changes in motivation scores and descriptive statistics for feedback and validation scores. The results indicated a significant increase in student learning motivation after using digital comics. The average pre-test score was 408 (SD = 15.3), while the average post-test score increased to 410 (SD = 14.8). Analysis using a paired t-test revealed a statistically significant increase (t(17) = 2.13, p = 0.045) with a small effect size (Cohen's d = 0.14). Media validation by experts indicated that the digital comics were highly valid, with an average score of 4.21 out of 5. Student feedback also showed high appreciation for the graphical and learning aspects of the digital comics, with an average score of 4.76 for the graphical aspect and 4.07 for the learning aspect. Overall, this study supports the use of digital comics as an effective educational medium to enhance student learning motivation. The digital comics not only captured students' interest but also helped them better understand the material. Abstract

The participatory method is a well-established strategy approved by researchers and is regarded as essential for teaching English as a second language. The Memrise application is employed as a supplementary learning tool to make English classes engaging and captivating. Consequently, the objective of this research is to assess whether a significant disparity exists in vocabulary improvement between two Junior High School classes when using the Participatory Approach and Memrise. The research methodology applied here is quantitative, utilizing a comparative design comprising pre-tests and post-tests. Both classes are under the instruction of the same teacher (the researcher), but they employ different teaching methods. The 7A class is instructed through the participatory approach combined with the Memrise application, while the other class is taught using the conventional homeroom teacher method. Notably, both classes demonstrated improved vocabulary, but the 7A class exhibited a notably higher level of enhancement compared to the 7B class. Moreover, the results indicate a significant discrepancy in vocabulary enhancement between students taught using the participatory approach and the Memrise application versus other methods  which is shown through the average increase of the 7A class is 90% and the average increase of the 7B class is 39%. To summarize, the findings underscore the effectiveness of the Participatory Approach and Memrise in facilitating vocabulary enrichment and enhancement among students.

Abstract

Incorporating ICT competencies into curricula, syllabuses, or course outlines is crucial to facilitate 21st century learning. However, as a receptive skill that the learner needs to develop, listening also requires supporting materials. such as ICTs, which can support instructors in providing the curriculum. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to create listening course syllabuses for the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) that include ICT competencies. This research used Design and Development Research (DDR) as the methodology for their study. In this study, fourteen listening curricula from five Indonesian institutions served as the source of data. The following are the findings of this study: First, the ICT competencies are primarily incorporated, either explicitly or implicitly, in the following components: Learning Indicators (I), Learning Objectives (Lob), Teaching Method (TM), Materials (M), Assessment (AE), and Learning Media (LM). Furthermore, most integrated competencies in the current listening syllabuses are related to the utilization of audio and video files. Technology literacy, on the other hand, rises to the most applied level of ICT competencies, meaning that the ICT competencies included in the current listening curricula are still at the level of comprehension and use. Second, six methods for incorporating ICT Competencies into listening syllabuses were suggested by this study. Third, the study suggested creating integrated listening curricula for ICT competencies that encompass all ICT competency levels. Twelve components and a skill-based curriculum were used in the suggested curricula.

Abstract

This research explores how discourse, actors, societal structures, power dynamics, and illocutionary acts play significant roles in shaping communication and influencing individuals' beliefs and attitudes. It emphasizes the importance of analyzing language and social interactions to gain a deeper understanding of how power and meaning are constructed and perpetuated in society. The researcher employed the concept of code-switching to interpret the film "The Judge" and derive insights into the dynamics of power within it. Social interaction and language were scrutinized through Communication Discourse Analysis (CDA), with van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis serving as the overarching theoretical framework, addressing core aspects such as grammar, metaphor, intonation, social cognition, and societal structures. A descriptive qualitative approach was utilized for data analysis. The film's script was referenced extensively. The researcher focused on the protagonist due to the significance of their remarks in shaping social relations and legal contexts. The investigation uncovered instances of power dynamics, including the manipulation and coercion employed by key figures. These protagonists exploited their authority within the community to dictate agendas.
