Abstract

This study aims to examine the illocutionary acts used by the secondary character, Sherlock Holmes, in the movie Enola Holmes 2. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzed the dialogue in the movie transcript to identify the types of illocutionary acts employed by the characters. The study found that all types of illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1969) were present in the movie. The most frequently used illocutionary act by Sherlock Holmes was assertive (55.2%), which reflects his role as a professional detective who delivers information and updates on his cases. In contrast, commissive (4.6%) was the least used illocutionary act by Sherlock Holmes, as he rarely makes promises to other characters. The study also examined the perlocutionary acts, which indicate the response of the interlocutors to the illocutionary acts used by Sherlock Holmes. The responses ranged from irritation to persuasion, encouragement, and sadness. This study highlights the importance of understanding the use of illocutionary acts in effective communication and provides insight into the language of a well-known literary character.

Abstract

This study employs critical discourse analysis to examine how political cartoons are portrayed on Indonesian magazine covers. The study aims to explore how political cartoons construct and reinforce dominant ideologies, satirize political figures, and engage with societal issues. Using a qualitative approach, the study examines visual and textual elements in selected magazine covers, specifically Tempo. The study scrutinizes humor, symbolism, and caricature as rhetorical devices to convey political messages and critique power structures. Abstract

This qualitative study delves into digital storytelling, focusing on the quality of interactions among learners engaged in this innovative pedagogical approach. This research aims to provide a comprehensive description of these interactions, analyze the outcomes, and critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of interaction quality in the context of digital storytelling. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation, we explored the experiences of 21 grade X students at MA Al-Aman in Lamongan, East Java. Thematic analysis of the collected data revealed that digital storytelling fosters collaborative engagement, allowing students to work together, share ideas, and co-create narratives. It enhances their understanding of subject matter, nurtures meaningful discussions, and fosters improved communication skills. The advantages of this approach far outweigh the recognized disadvantages, such as occasional disagreements and time constraints for collaboration. This research contributes to the educational discourse, emphasizing the profound impact of interaction quality on learning experiences. However, this study has limitations related to its scope and qualitative nature. Future research should explore diverse educational settings, digital storytelling tools, and pedagogical strategies. In conclusion, this study highlights the transformative potential of interaction quality in the context of digital storytelling, offering students a dynamic platform for collaboration, meaningful communication, and enriched learning experiences.

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the film "The Platform" through the lens of Marxist critique, focusing on its portrayal of social classes and the impact of the capitalist system on social relations. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the study examines the film's symbolic elements, metaphorical significance, and key dialogues and interactions. The findings reveal how the vertical prison structure symbolizes social hierarchy, with opulent banquets for the upper levels and scraps for the lower levels representing wealth disparity. The random assignment of prisoners each month illustrates the arbitrary nature of social mobility in capitalist societies. Additional symbols, such as Miharu’s search for her child and the act of sending the child back to the top, highlight themes of exploitation and the potential for revolutionary change. The study also explores the metaphorical significance of the vertical prison, critiquing the illusion of meritocracy and the systemic barriers to social advancement. Key dialogues emphasize social tensions, power dynamics, and ethical dilemmas faced by individuals within an exploitative system. This detailed examination extends previous research by providing a nuanced understanding of how "The Platform" critiques capitalist ideologies and highlights systemic social inequalities. The study underscores the film's significance as a critique of capitalist social structures and its potential to inspire discourse on social justice and equity. Future research could explore the film’s impact on audiences and compare it with other dystopian narratives.
