Abstract

This study explores the needs of EFL students in essay writing as an initial step toward the development of instructional materials grounded in the Process Genre-Based Approach (PGBA). Specifically, it seeks to examine students’ writing difficulties (lacks), learning preferences (wants), and expectations (goals) in order to inform the design of writing materials that are meaningful and responsive to their learning context. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving 42 EFL students and three lecturers teaching writing courses at a public university in Indonesia. Data were obtained through a 25-item questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data, while the qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings suggest that students frequently struggle with organizing their ideas, developing coherent paragraphs, and applying grammatical structures accurately. At the same time, they show a clear preference for guided instruction, the use of model texts, and writing activities supported by feedback. In terms of expectations, students express a strong interest in writing materials that are structured, reflective, and motivating. These findings suggest that PGBA is well-suited to addressing students’ needs, as it combines process-oriented writing with genre awareness and provides systematic scaffolding throughout the recursive stages of writing. Overall, the study demonstrates that the principles of PGBA align closely with students’ needs and expectations, supporting its use as a pedagogical framework for EFL writing instruction and materials development.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a multimodal e-module for creative writing based on South Sumatran local wisdom to enhance writing skills and strengthen the cultural identity of students in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. The research method employed Research and Development (R&D) using an adapted ADDIE model up to the Development stage (Analysis, Design, Development). Research subjects included 94 students for needs analysis, 3 expert validators (media, culture, language), and 30 students for practicality testing. The Analysis phase identified gaps in creative writing comprehension (62.77%) and South Sumatran local wisdom knowledge (34.04%). The Design phase produced a structured e-module blueprint with seven learning modules (biography, autobiography, short story, poetry, drama script, folktale, feature) integrating South Sumatran cultural elements such as songket weaving, gending sriwijaya dance, pempek cuisine, Musi River, limas traditional house, and Palembang folktales. The Development phase created an e-module using Canva and FlipHTML5 platforms, featuring a South Sumatran local wisdom inspiration bank, video tutorials, sample works, writing guides, and learning evaluations. Expert validation results showed the e-module was highly valid with an average of 89.65% (media expert 91.50%, cultural expert 87.57%, language expert 86.25%). Practicality test results indicated the e-module was highly practical with an average of 88.29%, with the local wisdom aspect receiving the highest score (90.83%). This research produced an e-module product that integrates creative writing and South Sumatran local wisdom with a multimodal approach for prospective Indonesian language teachers. These findings imply that integrating regional cultural content into digital learning media can simultaneously strengthen students’ creative writing competencies and cultural literacy. The e-module serves as a replicable model for incorporating local wisdom into higher education curricula across Indonesia, with broader implications for culturally responsive pedagogy in teacher education programs.

Abstract

Buddhist poetry has a rich tradition as a medium for spiritual expression and instruction across diverse cultures. In the digital age, this tradition has found a new arena for evolution and adaptation. This study aims to analyze the thematic evolution and socio-spiritual functions of Buddhist poetry within the Indonesian digital space. Employing a digital hermeneutic approach with a scaled reading method reading (van de Ven & van Nuenen, 2022), this research examines the production, dissemination, and reception of Buddhist poetry across six online platforms personal blogs, community blogs (Kompasiana), Buddhist organizational sites (tisarana.net, PERGABI YouTube), social media (TikTok), and content-sharing sites through three analytical levels: platform hermeneutics, distant reading to map thematic patterns, and close reading of selected poetic texts. The findings reveal that Indonesian digital Buddhist poetry maintains its contemplative core while developing three key interrelated functions: (1) an innovative medium for digital Dharma education from poetry as doctrinal learning on to multimodal learning resources on PERGABI YouTube; (2) a platform for reflecting on and responding to contemporary social issues, including inner struggle, grief, and ethical crises reinterpreted through canonical narratives such as Kisagotami and Devadatta; and (3) a space for negotiating Buddhist identity within a Muslim-majority context, both through conscious identity affiliation on secular platforms (Kompasiana) and digital ritual practices that build implicit communities on TikTok. Cross-platform analysis demonstrates how the distinctive features of digital media hypertextuality on blogs enabling doctrinal interconnection, multimodality on YouTube integrating text, sound, and ritual imagery, and algorithmic visibility on social media shaping the circulation of religious content fundamentally reshape poetry's function as ritual practice and community building, giving rise to what may be termed "networked Dhamma."This study concludes that digital Buddhist poetry in Indonesia represents a dynamic synthesis of traditional spiritual expression and contemporary digital adaptation, successfully bridging personal spiritual practice with collective engagement while maintaining doctrinal integrity. These findings offer a conceptual framework for understanding the transformation of religious literature and practice in increasingly digitalized societies.

Abstract

Digital storytelling (DTS) has become a method that has received significant positive attention in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Although numerous empirical studies have been widely documented, in-depth research on pre-service English teachers’ experiences implementing DTS in real classroom setting remains scarce. Many are familiar with DTS, but their beliefs about integrating Digital Storytelling into their teaching practice remain elusive. This research employed a case study design conducted at two different state universities in East Java, Indonesia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two pre-service English teachers during the same semester to collect data on their beliefs about implementing digital storytelling in their teaching practice. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. This analysis yielded three key findings: (1) Pre-service teacher professional reflections and beliefs regarding the use of digital storytelling; (2) Pre-service teachers' pedagogical barriers and strategies in teaching DTS; and (3) The role of pre-service teachers in integrating local cultural values. This study shows that equipping pre-service teachers with in-depth pedagogical skills in digital storytelling will increase their technological pedagogical and content pedagogical knowledge (TPACK) capacity and encourage them to develo creative and innovative pedagogical skills in teaching English.

Abstract

This article examines the role of religiosity and humanitarian values in modern Indonesian literature and their implications for literature learning in higher education. Unlike philosophy or history, literature presents reality through imaginative expression while adhering to principles of plausibility, integrity, novelty, and aesthetic value, making it a strategic medium for conveying moral and spiritual messages. Using a descriptive-qualitative method with content analysis, this study analyzes selected literary works, including Sang Pencerah by Akhmal Nasery Basral, Negeri 5 Menara by A. Fuadi, Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata, Kubah by Ahmad Tohari, Family of Permana by Ramadhan K.H., as well as short stories by A.A. Navis, Umar Kayam, and Nugroho Notosusanto. The findings indicate that these works contain strong dimensions of religiosity, such as monotheism, worship, and faith, alongside humanitarian values including friendship, empathy, devotion, and social awareness, which are embedded in characters, settings, and narrative conflicts. These values can be utilized as effective media for character education in higher education, particularly in fostering tolerance, responsibility, and respect for others. The study offers novelty by integrating religious and humanitarian values into character-based literature learning strategies, positioning literature not only as an aesthetic form but also as a relevant instrument of moral and humanitarian education in responding to globalization and the moral challenges faced by younger generations.
