Abstract

This study aims to investigate the types and frequencies of writing errors made by male and female students at SMAN 2 Indralaya Utara in composing narrative texts and to examine whether there is a significant difference in their writing performance based on gender. Employing a quantitative descriptive design with a comparative approach, the research involved 100 students (50 males and 50 females) selected through stratified random sampling. The students’ works were analyzed using Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s (1982) surface strategy taxonomy, covering omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors, while their overall writing performance was assessed through a rubric-based scoring system. The findings revealed that male students produced 305 errors with misformation as the most frequent type (53.77%), while female students made 167 errors, predominantly omission (40.72%). Results from the Independent Samples t-test indicated a significant difference in writing scores, where female students outperformed male students by an average of 7.251 points. The study concludes that gender influences students’ error patterns and narrative writing performance, highlighting the need for gender-sensitive teaching strategies in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills that plays a role in expanding vocabulary, mastering reading content, and sentence structure. Word recognition skills, reading accuracy, and reading rate are aspects that need to be improved. Therefore, teachers can find out the abilities of each individual student through various assessment media. This study aims to determine whether the Informal Reading Inventory (IRI) can assess students' word recognition and reading aloud abilities, as well as determine how many words students can say in one minute. The author used a qualitative method with a descriptive research design involving 32 eighth-grade students as participants. Data were obtained through interviews with English teachers, oral reading tests, and students' perceptions of the IRI implementation. The results showed that some students still had difficulty recognizing words, and many students made pronunciation errors on words they were less familiar with. The word recognition assessment results indicated that 17 students were still at the Frustration level. In terms of reading accuracy, all students had difficulty reading the word “Frightened.” Regarding reading comprehension ability, 15 students scored below 50%, while in terms of reading speed, students were at the second level. This study concluded that the use of IRI is effective as an assessment media to identify students' individual reading abilities. This study emphasizes the importance of training and providing varied learning media to improve students' word recognition and reading aloud abilities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze hate speech on social media in the context of Japanese and Indonesian society using a sociolinguistic approach and critical discourse analysis. Data were collected from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, totaling more than 2,000 data from both countries. The results show that hate speech in Indonesia tends to be explicit, emotional, and religiously or politically charged, while in Japan it is more implicit and implied in the form of metaphors or euphemisms. The analysis also reveals that hate speech does not only reflect individual opinions, but also reproduces dominant ideologies and maintains social inequality. This study is expected to be an important contribution to efforts to improve digital literacy and develop evidence-based policy strategies to address cross-cultural hate speech.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of students’ habits in watching TikTok English content on vocabulary enhancement among English Education students at Sriwijaya University. The objective is to determine whether students’ frequent engagement with TikTok contributes significantly to their vocabulary development and to identify the types of English content that are perceived as most effective in improving vocabulary mastery. The research applied an associative quantitative design within the positivism paradigm. The population consisted of 132 second- and fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University during the 2024/2025 academic year, selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through a validated and reliable questionnaire distributed via Google Forms, and analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS, supported by descriptive statistics and classical assumption tests. The findings revealed a strong and positive relationship between students’ habits in watching TikTok English content and their vocabulary enhancement, with a regression coefficient of 0.809 and a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.707) indicated that 70.7% of students’ vocabulary enhancement was influenced by their habits of watching TikTok English content, while the remaining 29.3% was affected by other factors. Descriptive analysis further showed that the types of TikTok English content most effective in enhancing vocabulary were educational-entertainment videos, daily conversations, and idioms or slang explanations. These forms of content provide contextualized, engaging, and authentic exposure to English, supporting vocabulary acquisition in a fun and accessible way. In conclusion, the study confirms that students’ frequent exposure to TikTok English content significantly improves their vocabulary mastery. The results highlight the potential of TikTok as an innovative and enjoyable learning medium that blends education with entertainment, making it a valuable supplement to traditional classroom learning.

Abstract

The integration of technology in English language teaching has been a significant development, further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, technology was steadily being integrated into classrooms in developed countries, utilizing tools like interactive whiteboards and educational software. Additionally, digital language learning tools provided learners with flexible resources to enhance their language skills outside the classroom. However, in developing countries, including Indonesia, access to technology remained limited due to infrastructure and socioeconomic challenges, particularly in regional areas. This study looks closely at two high school English teachers’ teaching experience after the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed the way English is taught in Indonesia, especially in rural areas like Flores Island. The move to online learning sped up the use of technology in education, changing traditional teaching methods. Teachers like Elsa and Anna showed flexibility by using tools like Google Classroom for remote teaching and to increase student participation. It was also found that there is a doubt that the use of ICT in English language teaching brings a high level of dependency on the technology to the students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of multimodal resources in teaching English writing at the senior high school level, particularly their contribution to content delivery, student engagement, and lesson sequencing. The research was conducted in class X-2 of a public Madrasah Aliyah in Medan with 35 students, using classroom video recordings as the primary data collection method. Data analysis was carried out through O’Halloran’s as Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA), examining ideational, interpersonal, and textual meanings. The recorded lessons were divided into 40 segments covering the entire teaching sequence and analyzed based on verbal, visual, gestural, spatial, digital, and collective synchrony modes. The findings revealed that verbal and visual modes dominated content delivery, gestural and spatial modes directed students’ attention, and interpersonal engagement was enhanced through praise, humor, motivational prompts, digital interaction, and collective activities. Textual meaning was achieved through the integration of multiple modes, marking transitions, providing scaffolding, and maintaining lesson coherence. These results highlight the strategic implementation of multimodal resources as essential for creating an interactive, inclusive, and effective learning environment, offering practical insights for teachers to optimize English writing instruction at the secondary school level.
