Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between students’ reading motivation and their reading ability at SMK IT Al-Izhar Pekanbaru. A quantitative correlational research design was employed. The study involved a population of 41 first-year vocational high schools students, selected through a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a validate 30-item motivation questionnaire (α = .894) and a 20-item reading test on narrative and descriptive texts (KR-20 = .860). The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis in IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The results revealed a moderate, positive, and statistically significant relationship between the two variables (r = 0.363, p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. Moreover, motivation accounted for 40.45% of the variance in reading scores. The study provides empirical evidence for a substantive link between motivational factors and reading ability, supporting the principles of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and highlighting the importance of fostering motivational strategies in English language teaching at vocational high schools.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of writer’s block on academic writing performance among English Education students at Sriwijaya University.Employing a mixed-methods approach with Sequential Explanatory design, the participants were 59 sixth-semester students enrolled in the Academic Writing course, selected purposively as they had prior experience with Paragraph Writing and Essay Writing. Quantitative data were collected using a writing test and writer’s block questionnaire (QIWB) by Mike Rose (1981), and analyzed using Spearman’s rho. The findings revealed a correlation coefficient (r) of -0.023 and a significance value (p) of 0.865, indicating a very weak negative correlation that is not statistically significant. This result suggests that writer’s block does not meaningfully affect student’s academic writing performance, implying that it may be a minor factor compared to other influences such as language proficiency, time management, and motivation. Qualitative data were collected through open-ended questionnaires administered to 9 participants, selected purposively based on their writing test results (3 high achievers, 3 average, and 3 low achievers). The results showed that students still experienced writer’s block due to psychological pressure, lack of ideas, and overthinking, but they could overcome these challenges through peer support and self-regulation strategies. The study concludes that while writer’s block is present among students, its impact on academic writing performance is minimal, highlighting the importance of addressing broader cognitive and affective factors in writing instruction.

The method used in this study is SLR (Systematic Literature Review). There are three journals focusing on challenges and three journals focusing on the solutions done by teachers and lecturers to help adult learners. These journals range from 2021 – 2022 (1 year) and were searched through Google Scholar, Research Gate, and Mendeley search engine. Hopefully the result of this research can be used by fellow language teachers in applying the proper teaching media when teaching adult learners and help them in facing their challenges.

Abstract

This research aimed at providing whether the use of summarizing strategy can improve reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 5 palu. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a sample of 49 students selected using a purposive sampling technique. The selected classes were class XI M2 and class XI M3. Furthermore, the research data were collected through a reading test administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to the experimental and control groups before treatment while the post-test was given to both groups after the treatment. The mean score of the experimental group on the pre-test was 41.52 and the control group was 53.55. Then, the mean score of the post-test for the experimental group was 83.04 and the control group was 89.80. The data were analyzed statistically using the t-test formula with degrees of freedom (df) = Nx + Ny - 2 = 26 + 23 - 2 = 47. The findings show that the t counted value is 2.342 while the t-table value is 2.011. This means that the t counted is higher than the t-table. Therefore, the research hypothesis is accepted. This finding answered the question from the problem formulation that the use of summarizing strategy can improve the reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 5 palu. The implication of this finding is that teachers need to use summarizing strategy in teaching reading comprehension designed to make students be able to express  ideas, perform better reading, and develop their creative thinking in class. Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Summarizing Strategy.

Abstract

This research seeks to analyze politeness strategies used by YouTube commenters in response to PragerU’s “Israelis or Palestinians – Who’s More Tolerant?”, a discussion about the contentious Israel-Palestine issue. Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory is the principal theoretical basis, as supported by Herring’s (2004) Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) in order to investigate the way in which digital users manage face, identity, and ideology in online political discourse. A qualitative descriptive approach was used with 100 comments purposively selected between September 2022 and September 2024. Comments were attributed to one of four politeness strategies: positive politeness, negative politeness, bald-on-record, and off-record, and interpreted for ideological organizational positioning. The results suggest that positive politeness, which is dominated by pro-Israel users, contributes to creating solidarity and reinforcing group cohesiveness, while negative politeness, which is more noticeable in the pro-Palestinian and neutral comments, downplays conflict and creates social distance. Bald on-record, strategies enable direct ideological claims; off-record strategies (irony, sarcasm) contribute to indirect criticism of other beliefs. The results indicate that politeness strategies in YouTube comments are used as cultural and social resources to manage relationships and express ideas as influenced by anonymity, asynchrony, and the affective dimensions of the medium. This paper draws out the implications of politeness theory online and demonstrates how politeness theory can inform identity construction and discourse polarization in politically sensitive digital environments.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyzed students' interest in using the Duolingo app at SMA Negeri 16 Padang. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through structured interviews and video recordings. Participants consisted of 10 students who had been using Duolingo for at least three months. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis, following the six stages proposed by Braun and Clarke. The results indicated that students’ interest in learning English was evident in five key indicators: enjoyment, curiosity, attention, active engagement, and self-confidence. In term of enjoyment the app provides an interactive and enjoyable learning environment through gamification features such as daily challenges, points, and levels, which motivate students and increase their engagement. Furthermore, Duolingo fosters students' curiosity, encouraging them to continue learning and improve their English skills. Use of the app also increases students' confidence, particularly in vocabulary and speaking. In conclusion, this study shows that students are indeed interested in learning English using the Duolingo app, as demonstrated by the results of five indicators of student interest in learning. This study recommends integrating Duolingo into English language learning to increase student interest in learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic representation of mental health issues in the character Miles Archer from Colleen Hoover’s Ugly Love using the transitivity system of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and supported by psychoanalytic theory. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze 1,171 clauses from Miles’ utterances, identifying six transitivity processes: relational, material, mental, verbal, behavioral, and existential. The findings reveal that relational processes dominate (31%), reflecting Miles’ fixation on identity and self-blame, followed by material (29.4%) and mental (29.1%) processes, which signify his emotional detachment and internal conflict. These linguistic patterns align with clinical traits of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The study concludes that transitivity analysis is a powerful tool for exploring mental health portrayals in fiction, offering interdisciplinary insights into how language encodes psychological distress.
